The jumbo "BSG season 4.5 thread" [Spoilers!]

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Scotland. Tyrol went to Scotland.

All humanity is descended from Hera. She was "the shape of things to come".

He specified the highlands. :)

According to RDM's podcast, Aaron Douglas got excited by the line and asked specifically if it could be the highlands. Being as Douglas is a Scottish name.

There are many, many answers to many, many questions in the last season.

All will become clear.

Or alternatively, battlestarwiki.org - though be warned, it's dry and humourless to the point of pretentious banality.

still wanna know why six and baltar seem happy that hera apparently died as a child beside helo and athena.

"Shes M-Eve.. isnt that great?"

No.. the last scene we see of Hera is the family walking along happily bantering and planning thier future. Who knew they were about to be eaten or killed by primitive man?

The point of being mitochondrial Eve means that she shagged a whole lot of primitive men first, I suspect.

A whole lot of primitive men who were miserly about their Y chromosomes, no less.

And then her daughters survived to shag slightly less primitive men who were also as miserly about their Y chromosomes as their fathers.

And then their daughters survived to shag....

And then Ronald D Moore wrote a story about it all.

The line is "archaeologists believe they have found the remains of a young woman who may actually be mitochondrial Eve".

It's probably worth noting that it's in the third person of a news report and probably represents a journalist's spin anyway - the odds of discovering the actual mitochondrial Eve are so remote that I doubt any scientist would claim that.

at the same time, Baltar and Six (angel versions) wouldnt exactly get excited over something other than the discovery of Hera, would they? And Hera would be Mitochondrial Eve. The only thing that disturbed me was I thought they said a young child, between her father and mother.

Had kids screaming around me when trying to watch the ep to be fair.

Boo!

I'd read that before. I like it as it is, especially on rewatch. :-/

Well, at least we know whatever the explanation is, it won't be fanwank in quality.

Hello, my name is (not really) Best First and i am (yes really) behind on everything.

Finally watched the end of this. Did a rather superb job of avoiding spoilers with the exception of Sam being one of the final five but only caught that a few weeks before All Along The Watchtower (a fine choice and no mistake) kicked in so not the end of the world.

General ponderings run thusly;

Loved what they did with Tigh - and how it did, and ultimately didn't, affect his relationship with Adama. Their relationship was the best thing running through the final series for me.

The Coup episodes were phenominal - i was pretty much howling at the screens in parts of it - Adama's speech on the bridge when he was arrested almost bust my speakers. Poor old Felix though. Nice to see Zarek going out with a bit of humility even when every moment up to then had been characterised otherwise. Everyone seemed to ignore the fact that a lot of the fault for the divisions lay with Roslin for not manning up when they had to deal with the fatigue of Wrong Earth though.

After that i felt it flagged a little (only in comparison) - bit of contrivance about 1 keeping Ellen alive although it was nice to have him finally thrust forward as the real villain of the piece. That said his ascension was also rather rushed over, including the confusing mention of Daniel who i assumed was the guy at the piano until i saw the interviews.

The finale was brilliant though, including the ROTK type ending which i thought it fully earned. Struggled a bit with the Kara thing, i think it might have fit better if they hadn't presented such concrete evidence of her death - all the other psuedo religous stuff was a bit more intangible - that said i think they made the right call not explaining it - the whole thing whould have become too mechanical.

Love that Helo made it.

Just about willing to swallow the technology dumping - but its hard to imagine there were not pockets of people who re-invented things. I find it hard to imagine Cottle, for example, would not have a hard time repressing the urge to get some medical tech up and running to the extent possible if people were being killed by something he knew was easy to cure. You can throw your car away but it doesn't stop you knowing what a car is.

Glad Tori died - the skank. Saw her Cylonniness coming as she seemed pushed forward in prominance quite a bit. Guess she served a purpose in standing in contrast to the others who more or less stayed true to what they were.

Poor old Sam, bit harsh. But then maybe he knew that he would see Kara again soon.

Also glad Hotdog made it. Guess its possible he is the man who bought STDs to earth. :)

So, all in all, magical.

Now to start on the Soprano's...

Or maybe watch this from the start again hmm...

Not quite as good as The Wire tho.

edit -in terms of the Battlestar Wiki... this almost caused me to fold in half with laughter:
Doctor Gaius Baltar is a brilliant scientist, and the rightfully elected president of the colonies. His visions and insight result in him becoming a revered religious figure for the remnants of humanity. Though not without minor flaws, Dr.Baltar has acted selflessly on numerous occasions, and has saved the fleet multiple times.
Yes, that is just how it was portrayed.

Does Starscream know that his fangirls are cheating on him?

I love that the whole genocide was just basically Cavil getting back at his parents.

The Plan is out on DVD (in the States) in October. Huzzah!

Frankly I tried watching the new BSG and - don't throw rock(lord)s at me! - found almost all the characters... pretty unsympathetic. And I can't really enjoy the series if there is no-one I can care about... I had the same troubles with Babylon5 (only person I liked was G'Kar)...

My question is, I only remember the old BSG vaguely (saw the movies and some episodes) and that I liked it. How many seasons is it, and is it good by today's standards?
