Bit torrents

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Bit torrents

Post by Pissin' Poonani » Tue Oct 14, 2008 5:28 pm

Hi all :)

Just have a question concerning bit torrents, as I don't really understand them.

I downloaded a torrent for a comic I wanted, and then decided that I don't want to run the risk of getting into trouble. I thought the damage had been done, but I looked into it and found that the torrent is just a piece of information that contains the information pertinent to what you are searching for, and then tells you where you can get the stuff.

Apparently it's a bit torrent programme that does all the work, and I never actually downloaded let alone installed one (when the file was downloaded it said I couldn't open it, and I thought 2 seconds was a bit quick to download 45 comics).

What I'm getting at is this-if all the above is true, I haven't actually done anything illegal have I? If I'm correct, all I've done is download something that points me in the right direction-kind of like a google search?

Cheers :)

I think you're okay since you actually haven't downloaded anything.
All you did was download a file named "Pissin Comics" (or whatever), and as far as I know, that's not illegal.
Can't believe I'm still here.

Things are mostly awesome :)
I've gone back to school (university), which basically means that I'm getting paid to party and goof around.
I have no idea what I wanna be when I grow up though (I don't even want to grow up!).

What are you up to? :)

Yeah, the little torrent file is basically just a file that tells the bittorrent program you use what to download and were to download it from. It has information on the file and a location to connect to to download/upload the desired file with a group of users.

The program isn't illegal, the file isn't technically since it's not the content your wanting to download either, so even though it contains the info on what would be downloaded they probably won't care since it's not the actual comic/movie/music etc....
