Bone

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Bone

Post by Yaya » Sat Mar 08, 2008 11:56 pm

I'm almost done reading one of the greatest comic experiences of my life.

Bone, by Jeff Smith.

Anybody read it?

It starts off like a newpaper comic strip, very juvenile but humorous. At the beginning, I was wondering why an intelligent friend of mine would recommend it.

But as I continued to read it, I became more and more involved in the story, which begins innocent enough and somehow manages to make a transition to a Lord of the Rings kind of tale.

The one constant throughout though is the humor. The characters are charmingly funny, and they have really grown on me.

Have to say, at the end, I'm going to be quite sad to see it conclude.
I've had a blast reading it.

I LOVE BONE.

Please don't quote that.

Although I thought the real height of the series came in the Great Cow Race toward the beginning. But otherwise it was a wonderful marriage of cartoon pseudofantasy a la Gummi Bears or Smurfs with the epic scope of the real thing.

To me, they shouldn't be talking about The Watchmen.

They should be talking about Bone as the comic of all comics.

Bone is excellent, but a different beast than Watchmen? I can see what you're saying though.

Jeff Smith's new comic is going to start later in the year, I think. It's called RASL. I've only seen a cover, don't know what it's about.

I am very impressed with Jeff Smith. I mean, to create the world he did the way he did with the characters he did is nothing short of creative genius. Sort of like the genius behind Dr. Seuss or Jim Henson, but with a more mature twist.

I'll be following this guy like a hawk from now on. Can't wait to see what other masterpieces he has down the pike for us.

Just finished up reading Bone.

It's definitely my favorite comic book tale of all time.

A thief who can jump between worlds, in short. With a weird rat-faced villain. Totally different than Bone but totally brill.

Bone can be purchased in one big 40$ edition.

RASL, thus far, is all of one issue.

I called into a radio talk show here in the US about comics and movies, and they said Bone in the $40 edition was the best comic deal they had ever seen. It's like a trillion issues over years all in one sweet package.

So how is RASL then? I hear it's a darker tale, not for the 'all ages' audience. Plan on getting it, but I wish he stuck with what worked before.

And just saw this:

Looks like Bone is headed for Hollywood. They should leave such masterpieces untouched, IMO.
