...urge to make joke... must resist...
On topic, looks like the chap did a lot of undisclosed work for charity (albeit a charity for an illness he had) and was a lovely chap, not sure how much of that is the usual aggrandising that accompanies this sort of announcement though.

I know what you're saying Karl, but I'd argue that as long as the charity gets good press and funds, then it's ok.
Beadle himself admitted that he did it for selfish reasons.

It's not really a dig at him personally, most celebrities only endorse charities which affect them or their family directly.

So do most people. You don't tend to think about horrible things unless they encroach upon your life somehow. So why would you lend support to something that's never really even entered your consciousness?

I'd disagree, I've known lots of people who have done good work for charities without the charity benefitting themselves or their family, but no bother.
