If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

It's not really a discuss question though, is it?

It's, like, a factually accurate statement of fact. Full of facts.

The day the Melody Maker closed up shop was the day I stopped reading the music press. The NME´s a big pile of wank, and the only pleasure I get from it is occasionally sending them letters slagging off their lazy journalistic standards and how they champion whatever band is flavour of the month, no matter how ***** they may be.

They actually published my White Stripes one, I´m very proud of that :)
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

MM was a great read...

What is wrong with humans?

How the [composite word including 'f*ck'] does that stop whilst ***** like Q and NME continue...

[composite word including 'f*ck'] off.

I loved Melody Maker. It made me happy. They weren't afraid to unconditionally love things (the NME is obviously far too cool to actually be seen to like stuff that isn't brand new, hip and cutting edge).

I buy the NME once or twice a year. Enough to remind me why I don't buy it for the rest of the year. Just a "right, let's see who they've decided is rubbish this week" skim.

Last time, the singles reviews basically consisted of "I didn't really listen to it... we chatted about football in the office whilst this was playing. The singer's a tit. RUBBISH." That was a storming Maximo Park track. Whilst the album is generally a bit lacking, it's easily the best thing on it and is a corking tune. Twats.

Oh, and the other one was "We love Beth Ditto. This song's not her best, but we like her so this is record of the week." I paraphrase, but I could easily not be.

*****.

Big Beth eh?

Jesus ******* christ, does she live purely to embarrass herself? The fat cow doesn't deserve legs.

Didn't NME and the readership vote her top of some sexiness poll?

Need I say more... need I say more. ****** weirdos.

The "cool list" iirc. Where the rag finds a new way of dictating to us which third rate nobody we should all be worshipping until they decide they're bored of 'em.

At least Q are consistently up the arses of Oasis and Radiohead, and therefore too busy to start getting hypocritical. They're twats, too.

I'll joint the support for Melody Maker here. The mag always seemed for more effortlessly cool than the NME ever did.

Although in general I find music magazines a bit pointless, I prefer to listen to the tunes than read about them.

Or they get successful, whereupon the NME slags them off for being 'f**king sell-outs'.

Does anyone actually read or take the NME's opinion seriously anymore?
Why doesn't anyone like me?

Yes.

How dare a band make music that people like and want to buy? You can't be Edgy and Hip if other people listen to the same bands as you.

I have the first few albums by Edgy. But I thought that Hip never really produced anything of note.

One of my friends was the drummer in an indie band that had some limited success a few years back, and while they weren't great they weren't exactly terrible either...at least no worse than the rest of the indie bands that were around at the time.

Anyway, the review of the first single off their second album in the NME read something like:

"Jesus ****ing Christ, are this bunch of sad ****s still going? Why the **** would anyone want to be a member of [band]? ****ing hell, surely squatting and eating your own **** while wearing nothing but your underpants while a gang of teenage girls point and laugh has got to be better than being a member of [band]."

That was it. Not a mention of the music, just that the reviewer that day had some sort of bee in their bonnet about the band itself. They imploded shortly afterwards due to neglible sales.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

I think I remember you saying that before, now that I think about it.

I liked them. :(

But their name didn't start with "The" so the NME was never going to back them.

Unlike flavour-of-the-month NME band The Enemy...

I was thinking about starting a band called The NME, so we could be enemies with The Enemy, and the NME would love us, no matter what we sounded like.

I went to see the Manics earlier in the year, and the support for part of the tour were The Enemy.

But the gig I went to, the support were a band called Fear of Music.

Whose single at the time was called "We Are Not the Enemy".

All very strange.
