In Rainbows

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

So. Ob and Spidey. What do we think?

Still getting used to some of the arrangements--I was used to the bootlegs on YouTube. So far it's one of their prettiest, most accessible and minimalist albums.

Some thoughts:

I liked this arrangement of Videotape a lot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQTsJG3CVnE
Can't win em all.

Arpeggi sounds f*kin beautiful, don't it?

It all sounds so close. Not the cavernous sound of OK Computer. The drums and Thom's voice are recorded so echo-free and mixed so tightly. A cool experiment.

I've been at work all day so I'm downloading it right now! :)

Edit: finished! Now I'm listening to 15 Step.

Faust ARP is a nice surprise. I thought it would be some mishmash of effects.

I've only heard it twice but think it's gorgeous.

Dave, that's a great review and hits it right on the money.

Oh, and Reckoner was a bit of surprise, wasn't it? I expected this:

I always get the impression that there's probably about 5 unreleased versions of each Radiohead song. Imagine if they release a Beatles style Anthology one day!

It's been 6 years, but I still wish the album version of Spinning Plates was more like the live version.

I've only listened to it once, but right now I rank it as their fourth best album. The album will probably grow on me when I listen to it some more though.

I feel it's a step up from Hail to the thief (which I wasn't to fond of). So, as I said, it'll probably grow on me :)

In order of greatness I'd probably put them at:

OK Computer
The Bends
In Rainbows
Kid A
Hail to the Thief
Amnesiac
Pablo Honey

But in time Kid A may regain third place

Our site seems horrifically low on Radiohead fans.

Yes, it's more cohesive and focused than Thief. I liked Thief, if only for the punk-rock feel that came through in the rush to record. But their albums are better when they're obsessed over.

Hail to the Thief seemed slightly too long. And 'The Gloaming' had b-side written all over it.

I would've loved Kid A and Amnesiac as a double album.

Yeah, I think it's impossible to have a debate on the relative merits of Amnesiac given the giant shadow of its older brother. I heard Amnesiac first, actually, and I've always preferred it over Kid A.

Gloaming was a lame song, though this version is pretty cool: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Arp0r3UWgkU

I'm surprised they relegated "Bangers N'Mash" to the bonus disc. That was one of the best 'Head songs I've heard.

Yeah not bad. The live versions of the experimental stuff always seem to trump the studio versions. I didn't quite get 'Idioteque' until I saw the full force of it live. Its a reason why the 'I Might Be Wrong' live album is worth owning. That and 'True Love Waits'.

Haven't yet heard Bangers & Mash. Have you looked up some of the old b sides too? Some of them are amazing.

Yeah. I love A Reminder, Worrywort, Cuttooth, and of course good old Talk Show Host. The My Iron Lung EP is decent as well.

Have you heard the orchestral version of Arpeggi? AIM me and I can get the mp3 to you. spenciemusprime@aim.com

Have you heard of a guy called Christopher O'Riley? He does really cool piano versions of Radiohead tracks.

Will mail ya tommorow.

Videotape was part of the From the Basement series.

Arpeggi... let me find the YouTube. With the Nazareth orchestra sometime in 2005.

I've got a couple others to send to you. And there's this: http://sitemeier.free.fr/download.php

Maybe you were born with it.

Maybe it's Maybelline.

(thanks for the tracks. Loving Down is the New Up.)
