I need a bit of help mate.
My computer always screen freezes when I try and play good games like HL2 or Pes.
I have a radeon x550 and having done a bit of research have found out that it is gash and probably the reason why my comp dies, even though I can't find any specific similar problems.
Could you reccomend me a decent replacement, one that isn't too expensive and will get the job done without all the bells and whistles.
Cheers.

I'm not Impy, but this should do the trick for you and it's nice and cheap too.
It's not DirectX 10, but it's still a good card!

What about this one:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/126986
The number is higher, ie it is a 8500GT as opposed to a 7600GT and yet it costs less...
Also, I've found a lot of 76ooGTs. Not all are nVidia GTs though... does this just mean that some other company has licensed the hardware and rebranded it with their own comp name?
There seems to be a few 'point of view' and 'innovision 3D' GTs out there. They look to be the same card just with a slightly different name, but they're all a fair bit cheaper. Worth a punt?
Also, not all of them have the 'Geforce' bit at the front - be wary of these or is this a company name and not something that notes a particular function?
Cheers for any help.

"Nvidia" is just the chipset, lots of companies buy the chipset and flog it under their own name "acer, innovision, gainward" etc.
I've heard some interesting things about the 8xxx series, namely that they perform slightly worse than their equivilent 7xxx cousins in most tasks, which is why i recommended the 7600.
Plus, the 8xxxx are the first generation DX10 cards... you could be much better off, IMHO, waiting a year or so for the second or third generation cards before going down that path.
I've currently got a 6600GT and am thinking about getting a 7600GT to take the sting out of the next year/eighteen months before the next/proper DX10 cards become available.

Oh really? That's interesting... I was reading a review the other week where the 8600gt vastly underperformed the 7600gt on 90% of the tasks they threw at it, which left me bamboozled. But i guess that would make sense if it was an old review... i should've taken notice of when it was written really.Impactor returns 2.0 wrote:the 8 series didnt perform well to begin with, last year, when the drivers were crap but since then they rip on most things, 8 series GTS is super value for money and rips modern games apart.
Still, personally i think i might still go for the (slightly cheaper 7600GT) and wait for the next gen DX10 cards to come out (like, when DX10 becomes actually needed )

www.tomshardware.com normally reviews the best cards each month in different price ranges, then performs around 10 different benchmarks on them. so they are good to check out and deff know what they are talking about.
I agree about DX10, outside of Crysis, which require a top of the range super computer capable of calculating the size of the Universe every second, DX10 cards arnt worth it much.
They are in generall more powerfull tho, and there is a new range of 9 series Nvidia GOU's on the way, oh how ATI have fallen, and AMD for that matter.
