Surely Prince is mainstream?

He's also joined the army of artists who can now sell out dozens of concerts without batting an eyelid but whose new albums don't really bother the charts anymore.

See also Stones, McCartney, etc.

Mainstream was a bad word usage. I meant he's not regarded as cutting edge A-list material. As evidenced by your assertion that he's past his peak. No big sales, no heavy media attention/praise (aside from when he does something gimmicky).

Okay, he's a legend and nobody'd argue that... but he's not exactly the media darling that Thom Yorke is so desperately trying (and failing) not to be.

He's not as much a part of the public consciousness as, say, McFly. Sadly.

I think if he didn't release an album a year things would be different. There's something to say for whetting people's appetite.

Nonetheless, Prince is mint--and should be a lot more fun as a public figure than shy old bookish lazyeyed Thom Yorke. But for some reason Yorkey gets the attention.
