Scariest movie you've seen?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Scariest movie you've seen?

Post by Obfleur » Tue Aug 28, 2007 11:22 am

I saw David Lynch's Inland Empire this weekend.

I turned off the lights and took a seat in my couch and fired up the movie.
Approximately 90 minutes later I wanted to turn the lights on - but I was to scared to move. I thought that if I looked away something would happen to me.
This movie ****** me up in so many ways it's not even funny.
It truly was a nightmare.

I wont spoil anything since it's a fairly new movie.

I say it's okay to spoil movies from 2005 and backwards. But maybe we should start of each post with the name of the movie, and then people can decide if they want to read it or not?

Bring on the horror tales!

I'm a tricky one with horrors- if a movie is too gorey I just dismiss it as unrealistic/shock tactics (the Fly, most zombie movies [which can still be fun, don't get me wrong]), if it's too psychological it tends to get annoying (like the kid in the US version of Ring, whom I was fervently wishing death upon).

Things have to strike a good balance for me- Blair Witch would have been good if it hadn't come over like a clever entry in a Uni Mediastudies contest for a budget horror flick.

I tend to run with the more subconscious fears- the classic horror monsters like Werewolves I think endure because there is something primal in being afraid of them. In which case I'd say The Howling is one of very few films to actually scare me; even tho much of it is tongue-in-cheek the werewolf design (which Dog Soldiers borrowed very heavily on) is truly nightmarish. I can't stay outside in the dark for a few days after seeing it.

I'd also like to put an honorable mention in for a videogame- FEAR. It works very well imo because it plays on every cliche we think we know about horror-

"Oh, fine, I can see where this is going... come on, boo, get it over with..."
"Boo!"
"Not scary..."
[something to your left you hadn't seen] "BLARGH!"
"...meep..."

Most things I find scary in movies/games tend to run on the same principles- generally things which are very lithe/quick and which lurk/hunt in shadows and like to make menacing noises all the time you can't see them (some of the monsters in Bullet Witch (xbox 360) fit that MO also).

On that basis more honorable mentions for creatures like Riddley Scott's Alien.

Oooh, I might have to check Inland Empire out. On the subject of Lynch, really loved Mullholland Drive - very unsettling, but not necessarily scary.

Okay, scary films, there's the obvious classics: Halloween, The Shining, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, An American Werewolf in London. I think the fact that they're old adds to the grittiness, and turn the lights out and watch and they can give you the jitters.

The Ring (Japenese version) is another obvious contender. And I really rate The Others.

There's a low budget Brit film called The Bunker which is rather eerie. Skeleton Key and The Descent also had their moments.

Gore films are all the rage at the moment, but its not the same.

I'm with you on that. I can't escape a feeling of "Okay, that's nasty... but not really scary. Are you just doing this for the sake of it?" with some movies. Being nasty/unpleasant isn't the same thing as being scary imo.

First time i saw the Blair Witch project at the cinema i came home and started to hack down some trees in my garden.

I think the BW is an excellent film, probably one of the scariest films ive ever seen.

I think the grudge is pretty decent too.

On the gore front, house of 1000 corpses is wicked!

Oh yeah. Gore is fun and all - but not really scary/unsettling.

And you talking about games and alien reminds me of Alien VS Predator 2, the game.

I love Lynch and the mood he creates in his films (and Twin Peaks).
Inland Empire was like a step above Mulholland Drive - very unsettling, with a couple of "Oh my god, holy ****, please, no no!!" moments.

I should add though that I am highly sensitive to the stuff that Lynch creates. He really gets to me.

For videogames, the original Silent Hill was pretty scary for me playing it alone by myself at night. But I prefer scary video games to scary movies cause at least in the video games I've got a crowbar with me to kill things with.

The only movie that truly scared me was an old Tempest update called Forbidden Planet. The wierd invisible creature haunted me for years as a kid and I don't really know why.

Then I saw "The Grudge"...

There's one movie that I remember haunting me throughout my childhood. It was a nondescript 80s horror film called The Gate, wherupon a hole leading to Hell happens to break out in a suburban backyard while the parents are out of town.

I have to say, The Ring was the most overhyped scary movie ever. I was never scared in that movie, primarily because until the last 20 minutes, when the girl walks out of the TV, it's still highly plausible that the ghost's actions thus far were not malicious.

It's not often that a film scares me really, sure, they might make me jump now and then, but is that being scared?
Visual horror i don't find scary at all, it's more the 'makes you think'/imagination kind of thing that scares me.

Saying that, when i was a kid, films like Alien and The Thing scared the living crap out of me... but then as a kid, i probably shouldn't have been watching 18 certificate films! ;)

I certainly can't think of any modern films that have scared me, older films that have 'scared' me in the past would include things like Poltergeist and the original 'The Haunting' (if only for a couple of scenes) (and not that ****** remake they made a few years ago)...

Oh and anything with Tom Cruise in I refuse to watch as i find a) his 'acting' scary b) the thought that people like him even scarier...

I watched Aliens for the first time shortly after it came out on TV with my dad. (I must've been like 10 or 11 at the time I think) Scared the daylight out of me, now it's one of my favourite movies ever.

I agree that movies that focus more on scaring you with your imagination work better, the Exorcist terrified me when I first saw it, kept thinking satan was hiding everywhere in my house.

And overall, zombies have always scared me.

I always liked the body snatchers, that whole idea that over night the world is taken over by aliens, and your the last one left is a scary concept.

The scariest movie I've ever seen is Darkness Falls. If you think about it, it's really not a scary movie, but just the fact that it's the toothfairy sends chills down my spine. I watched the movie for the first time with a bunch of friends (we had a scary movie sleepover which consisted of Darkness Falls, From Hell, 28 Days Later, and Feardotcom which was also terrifying) and it was about midnight, lights off, on a 55" TV with surround sound. I was afraid of the dark for months to come afterwards.

The Ring too, I watched it by myself with a blanket covering my head for almost the entire movie. I had a peep hole about the size of a quarter to actually see.

And The Grudge was one that made me scream a couple of times. I saw it in theaters with a bunch of friends, I was the only one that thought it was decently good and scary. I'm sure if I were to watch it again without them, I'd be even more scared.

Oh, and IT by Stephen King. I don't even want to talk about that movie.

I can't even play scary video games for the life of me. For some reason, playing the game just gives me the creeps. However if it comes to watching a scary movie or watching someone else play a scary video game, I'm all for it.

Seriously, anything remotely scary in a video game will make me not play it. Like, for some reason, I was very reluctant to play againt the Flood in Halo. I just find it kind of creepy when you just randomly see your health go down and there's nothing around you. And then you look down and see some zombie human-thing just hacking away at you. Not for me. I did however get over the Flood fear in Halo 2 though.

Oddly enough, one of the scariest movie scenes for me was in Clash of the Titans, when Perseus is in Medussa's dark torchlit lair. The fact that she could turn those warriors to stone with just a look AND shoot arrows with deadly accuracy scared the **** out of me.

From Hell was a dam good movie. But I have found that I get rather bored with "hack and slash" movies. By time there was "how sweet, fresh meat" I was like

The other scariest movie was Leviathan. I coult not even finish it!

Normally don't watch scary movies, but I saw recently the first few minutes of a Stephen King movie. Then I turned the tv off because I knew it would be too scary.

And for some reason Shaun of the Dead frightened me.

Rose Red is most likely the scariest movie I've ever seen. Somehow I managed to watch it when it first came out, which is suprising since I was 8 or 9 at the time. Scared me to death.

I still have that blasted waltz tune stuck in my head.

That guy..omg
At first, just lookin at the box, I thought he was cool.
And then I watched the movie and he's the reason I never want to see the movie again..

Aside from the whole thing being in spanish..

Oohs! Oohs! I got a new one.
This may make me look like a complete wuss, BUT I don't care.
Snakes On A Plane has me scared to never get on a plane ever again. Which I find amazing in my case because I LOVE snakes, and am never afraid of them (at least the ones I've come across). Once I saw a cottonmouth and ran towards it to get a better look, against my better judgement knowing that that snake has a horrible temper and will chase you down.

Another shout for Blair Witch here. Not many films capture the feeling of pure terror in the way that film did.

Blair Witch, was totally ruined for me, by that woman's constant screaming... the concept and ideas where sound, it had so much potential to be really scary... but i just found myself getting annoyed at the girl... and wishing she'd either shut up or get killed :(

I'm not a horror fan but I bought this film.

The thing is I don't like the thought of being overpowered or stabbed and this film had both.

I was also horrified by the stab scene in Saving Private Ryan. I can't watch SPR because of that scene.
