I'm currently in the process of taking Lloyds TSB to court- they owe me over £700 in overdraft charges over the last few years! And they're currently whinging at me because I'm over my limit again... I wouldn't be if you didn't charge me £60+ each time I bring it back within the limit! Damnit all.
I hope I get my money back, it would really help

Re: Bloody bank
I've been in the same situation with Lloyds. I was between jobs and they ****** me over in this way. I even sat down with them to say I'd just started a new job and could they help. They offered me a loan!Karl Lynch wrote:I'm currently in the process of taking Lloyds TSB to court- they owe me over £700 in overdraft charges over the last few years! Looking back I let them get away with it. Interestingly, a barrister is currently suing Natwest for the same thing. Many eyes are watching that case to see how it develops.

I was without a job for several months then on a low earner, I had lots of debts and kept inadvertantly dipping into my overdraft- what's worse is I tried very quickly to bring it back, then they'd slap on a charge (normally about £90) which would throw it straight back into the red so they could charge me again!
I've got a new bank account and have essentially boycotted Lloyds. My account is still overdrawn and there's nothing I can do about it until pay day- they've been sending me all sorts of nasty letters but what can I do, I honestly have no money and for a second I wouldn't be in this place if they hadn't conned me out of about £728! Utter utter swines.

Not sure what the legal system over there will say, but over here you'll be laughed at until you cry and start cutting for a suit like that.
[At least here] You signed on the line and agreed to the fee schedule and also agreed that they can change it when they want, they just have to tell you. Sucks about the charges, but ya knew about them and overdrew anyway.

The point is the bank charge should be proportional to the actual costs they incur. It doesn't cost £60 for the bank to send Karl a letter.

Exactly. Lots of people have been successfully reclaiming their charges since they are unlawful under UK law- the bank can only charge you the 'cost' to the bank of you going overdrawn, which unless it involved something extraordinarily unusual, consists normally of just an automatic letter. Bank works on the premise that most people can't be bothered/don't know these things and pay the charges. It's scandalous really

That's what I'm hoping- I'm counting down the 14 days until the judgement is mine by default. My only concern would be if they try and challenge on the grounds I'm still overdrawn, but that doesn't have anything to do with it as I'm reclaiming charges from February backwards?Impactor returns 2.0 wrote:stick it to them Karl, i saw on watchdog many banks never even turn up to court. some crazy figure like 99% of cases are not defended.

I got a letter from their solicitor today.
I'm legally obliged to say that they did nothing wrong, they are not refunding my charges and I can't speak of anything they choose to do as being because they did anything wrong.
On the plus side, I'm getting £700+ as a 'good will' gesture
Now if only my job didn't suck I'd be on easy street I wouldn't mind except I constantly feel like I'm screwing stuff up... I'm not dumb or lazy, but my boss is always telling me I've done things wrong- usually where I've had to organise like table of 100 numbers or something and I accidentally got one of them wrong And I've discovered £16k isn't that much bah. TBH I'm dreading work tomorrow, I just want to stop getting in trouble with stuff I didn't even know I'd done wrong
Good news about the bank tho

good news with the Bank Karl, that must help you out a bit.
Sorry to hear work is making u feel down, stuff like that can be horrid.
I should hopefully go into a new job next week, and i know this sounds completely silly due to what I do but I have a problem with numbers in standard form, I tend to mess them up by 1 digit quite offten, som im pretty sure im going to look a right tit at work...
I hope your not lossing confidence in your own skills Karl, everyone makes mistakes, we are only human.

I'm sure you'll be fine I tend to do similar stuff My problem is my job tends to involve lots and lots of tables of numbers, and it's so easy to zone out and miss something. You could do what I do which is do it once, then go take a break (just make a tea or do something else for 15 mins), then come back and have another look to see if anything obvious stands out. What I find helps is to make a list of what I've done so I can go check it. That's what I've started doing so I don't F stuff up so muchImpactor returns 2.0 wrote:I should hopefully go into a new job next week, and i know this sounds completely silly due to what I do but I have a problem with numbers in standard form, I tend to mess them up by 1 digit quite offten, som im pretty sure im going to look a right tit at work...
Thats true I appreciate the thought I feel very much like a fish out of water tho, academia Computing was fine, IT in the real world is a bit blargh. I tell myself for a few months its only just to repay debt and save up for some better times- then I can think about changing and moving into the stuff I really likeI hope your not lossing confidence in your own skills Karl, everyone makes mistakes, we are only human.
Good luck for the new job! Don't forget a packed lunch I do, and go hungry most days

If you call them up and make a noise about it they might refund it It's a small amount to pursue action over (though keep track of such things for when they mount up), but they might refund it if you get an attitude with themLegion wrote:Definitely good news on the bank front!
Am a bit pissed off with my bank at the moment as they've stolen £50 from my account this month... could've done with that money this month

Yeah, I sent them a very, very arsey email over the weekend and having just quickly checked my account again, those charges seem to have vanished, although I have not heard word back from them saying anything about it... I need to sit down and check it out properly.Karl Lynch wrote:If you call them up and make a noise about it they might refund it It's a small amount to pursue action over (though keep track of such things for when they mount up), but they might refund it if you get an attitude with themLegion wrote:Definitely good news on the bank front!
