My girlfriend left me.

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

I'm not usually one to air private problems here on the board, but as this has never happened before, I'm a bit lot. I'm not quite sure what to feel right now. She had some really good reasons and I honestly think it was for the best, but I'm just a bit numb right now.

It will feel raw right now, but it might be for the best in the long run.

You will be ok.

That is rough mate. I know you and I don't always see eye-to-eye but being left is hard enough when you're not in a foreign country- now by yourself. The numbness is to be expected, probably followed by a feeling like it's not so bad and everything's fine... then followed by crushing, total emptiness.

All that can really be said is that it will go away by itself, and the part of you that was filled by having another person in your life can be filled just as easily by someone else (to recoin a phrase for possibly the 100th time by Stuart).

Until then you're smart enough to just try and remind yourself that it's only a relationship- you will have more, and potentially even more meaningful ones. That's assuming you two don't work it out, but that's a dangerous thing to place any faith in.

Naturally I don't know the circumstances so I'm just trying to console as best I can. We may not always have held the highest opinion of each other at times in the past but I'm here to help if I can- we all are. Keep safe and talk whenever you need to.

Sorry to hear that, Professor. I suppose we don't always see eye to eye as well, but I've got the utmost respect and admiration for you and envy the hell out of your capability and confidence whilst flinging yourself across the world to Japan.

The only thing you can do is lean on your friends, online and otherwise, and ride it out. As the cliche goes, time cures everything. And if you do already think it for the best, then your hardest journeys are behind you, and it's just a matter of A, acceptance, and B, building a new life/routine with just yourself, which can be scary, but once you get into it, is usually quite exhilerating.

Its a temporary fix, but I find hitting the clubs and getting good and drunk helps. And there's always plenty of entertainment to be found in Japanese clubs. Other than that, like the others say, friends and time, and eventually someone else that you genuinely give a damn about.

Oh and if she was Japanese, its kind of to be expected. Cultural differences are a big strain, and sometimes you don't even really notice it as that (speaking from somewhat painful experience). I'm not saying its not worth it, just that its going to be a little tougher going than someone who's from a culture with more similar attitudes to life. I'm hoping its a learning curve, cos I haven't really managed to get it right yet.

More fish in the sea.

Or, since you're in Japan, more sushi at the bar.
"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.
