Recovering deleted files

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Recovering deleted files

Post by The Last Autobot » Thu May 10, 2007 8:11 pm

A couple of days ago "someone" in my office deleted a file that now is extremely important to have.

Can you recommend me a program to find that deleted file? Preferrably if I can find one online right now, cause my boss will kill somebody If he finds out (I wont be the one to blame but nonetheless).

Thnx in advance!

There's a small suite of programs out there called GetDataBack, or GetNTFSBack, or something along those lines.

I used it back in january when my secondary HDD decided to corrupt after I'd just replaced my primary HDD.

Just make sure you've got a second drive to restore too, or you could make things worse. ;)

Rebis pretty much covered it, but you can always restore the system to a time before the deletion. Go: Start  Programs  Accessories  System Tools  System Restore. It may not work, but it's something you can try. :)

My way would still be valid.

Well, as long as the specific blocks on the hard disk have not already been written over with new data, which if the time window between deletion and restoration is small enough is unlikely.

May I suggest that your office invest in some form of backup storage mechanism, to reduce the likelihood of this occurring again.

http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/UK/welcome.htm

Install it on another computer, then copy the executable onto a USB stick -- it'll minimise the risk of overwriting the data you're trying to recover.

It's free and pretty damn good.
