Do you own any of these consoles?
Are you satisfied with it/them?
I personally don't own any of them (allthough I did preorder the Wii).
Here's a comparison of the three systems and what games they had six months after their release date.
I'll be using www.gamespot.com for this, and see how many games got a score of 8 or more.
Nintendo Wii.
Twilight Princess is not a Wii game. And the VC games doesn't count. Here's the list!
Warioware Smooth Moves. 9.1
Super Paper Mario. 8.8
Madden NFL 07. 8.4
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz. 8.3
Rayman Raving Rabbids. 8.0
Trauma Center: Second Opinion. 8.0
Total: 6 games.
X-Box 360.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. 9.6
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. 9.2
Perfect Dark Zero. 9.0
Burnout Revenge. 8.8
Dead or Alive 4. 8.8
Project Gotham Racing 3. 8.8
Call of Duty 2. 8.8
Kameo: Elements of Power. 8.7
Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis. 8.5
Need for Speed Most Wanted. 8.4
Worldwide Soccer Manager 2007. 8.3
Fight Night Round 3. 8.3
NBA 2K6. 8.3
Hitman: Blood Money. 8.2
2006 FIFA World Cup. 8.2
Top Spin 2. 8.2
Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie. 8.2
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved. 8.2
Uno. 8.1
Ridge Racer 6. 8.1
Condemned: Criminal Origins. 8.0
Total: 21 games.
Ps3 (released in europe in march, -07)
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. 9.5
Resistance: Fall of Man. 8.6
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection. 8.3
NHL 2K7. 8.3
Virtua Tennis 3. 8.2
Fight Night Round 3. 8.2
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. 8.2
NBA 2K7. 8.2
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07. 8.2
Call of Duty 3. 8.2
Def Jam: Icon. 8.1
Virtua Fighter 5. 8.1
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent. 8.0
College Hoops 2K7. 8.0
NBA Street Homecourt. 8.0
Ridge Racer 7. 8.0
Total: 16 games.
The X-360 hade the most games (21) with a score of 8 or above.
Next up was the Ps3 (16) and then the Wii (6).
Having a bunch of games with a high score isn't everything though - but I do hope that the Wii'll get some awesome game soon, 'cause my urge to buy one is fading (I really want one so I can play the VC games - but buying a consol just for Super Paper Mario and twenty year old games isn't worth €330).

I don't own any of them because I think Gamecube is better than all of them. Playstations and Xboxes are notorious for freezing and long loads. The Wii has that Wii-mote and you have to buy a normal controller for $30. Also, the games cost you out the wazzoo. I prefer my Gamecube for the fact that gameplay is simple, fun, and hosts Metroid 1 and 2 plus Super Smash Bros. Melee. If only they'd release Metroid Prime 3 for it.

Been using a Wii around a friend's house, can't say I was very impressed with it. As a toy to have a beer and a laugh with some mates it's awesome, as something I'd seriously want to sit down and get involved with playing a game for a few hours it's a nonstarter for me.
XB360 has some fun stuff out on it, my mission is to complete Hitman Bloodmoney with all achievements unlocked :3
Paul Thurrot of Winsupersite.com points out reasonably I think that ATM the 360 is about the best serious gaming machine, but once people learn how to actually program for the PS3's mind-bending power (and the console comes down a bit in price) that is very likely to change. The Wii is a different kettle of fish to that really.
Just my worthless input.

Tiger Woods Wii got a 7.5, and Wii Sports got 7.8, so they don't qualify (I only include games with a score of 8 or more)Best First wrote:i have a 360 and would not mind a Wii.
really noys reu about those games lists though mate, obvious ommissions are Tiger Woods and Wii Sports (hee hee) for the Wii and PES 6, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six and Gears of War for the x-box.
Also, whiever gave perfect dark 9 out of 10 is a right chunt.
PES6 was released over a year after the 360 release (I only included the games that were released within six months after the launch of the consol). The same goes for Gears of War, Rainbow Six Vegas and Splinter Cell Double Agent.
That's the reason they aren't listed.

All I have is a 360, I refuse to buy a PS3 after having to buy multiple PS2s (plus its ridiculous price tag), and I want to get a Wii, but I don't have the cash right now.
Twilight Princess is a game that came out on the Wii that utilitzes the Wii mote. It's a Wii game, regardless of it's development quest. There are plenty of other games on your list (and not just a lot of the sports games) that were hasty ports that didn't do much but improve graphics, reduce loading times, and add on a skeleton online section if you're lucky.
And if you're NOT going to include VC games, I think you should not include XBL games as well, even though some of them are original content (Geometry Wars, which kicks all kinds of ass). The line of thinking shouldn't be original content/old content, it should be that like you said, you're not going to go spend hundreds of dollars on a machine for the main purpose of fiddling around with $5 games.
Basically, I think it goes like this:
"I want to have my console as a media center, and I want super badass graphics, the best processing, the absolute top performance video game experience I can have" = PS3
"I want to have a console that's going to have a version of all the big games developed for it, where I can play lots of stuff online since all my friends don't play video games, and I don't want to clean out my wallet. And some media stuff would be nice too." = 360, MGS/FF nonwithstanding.
"I want to have a console that's totally different. No matter how much better graphics get, I'm still just pressing the Triangle/X button to do things. I want something new. Maybe something I can try and get my girlfriend to play with, or to pull out with my friends for fun after a night at the pub (that doesn't sound good. :P ) Graphics and online stuff are good, but I'm more concerned about good games and something REALLY next generation at a budget price" = Wii
That brings up another reason I dislike Sony: The introduction of assinine buttons like Triangle, Square, and Circle. Because A,B,X,Y, L, R (SNES) or A,B,C,D (Genesis) were just too simple. Do you realize that there is NO Triangle/Square/Circle key on a keyboard? So when you write a FAQ or even just talk about the Triangle/Square/Circle keys, you have to write out Triangle/Square/Circle every time? I think you did. YOU BASTARDS!

I have no idea what XBL games are, so that's the reason those are on the list (what the heck is it?)Shanti418 wrote:I think you should not include XBL games as well, even though some of them are original content (Geometry Wars, which kicks all kinds of ass).

And whilst the Wii is (superficially) different, it feels like that in some games they have just replaced "pressing triangle" with "shaking your wrist, which might or might not lead to the character swinging/throwing Object X" (=it's less precise than pressing a button).
But when you can [composite word including 'f*ck'] around with a lightsaber and the controls are more precise, I'll need to change my pants, 'cause that will be different compared to just pressing a button (or waggle your wrist or whatever).
Can't believe I'm still here.

ok, but if you are comparing the consoles i would say its more important to reflect the choice available on them, regardless of review score one site or how long its been out.Obfleur wrote:Tiger Woods Wii got a 7.5, and Wii Sports got 7.8, so they don't qualify (I only include games with a score of 8 or more)Best First wrote:i have a 360 and would not mind a Wii.

I mean by ignoring those 2 Wii games you are ignoring 2 of the games that make the most of the unique selling point.
That's how i would do it anyway.

I own a 360 and a wii, i have access to a PS3. - I also play my games via a 1080p HD screen.
currently, the 360 seems the clear fav, it actually has some games to play onit. And bloody good ones too.
my GF loves the wii, and i enjoy playing it with her, i like the wii for its interaction.
I think the PS3 is overly expensive right now, doest have any games that justify a £400 price point and more importantly, doesnt have any games on the way, for at least 6 months, that are worthy of note of, available on the cheaper 360.
the 360 can look forward to Mass Effect in a few months, one of the most incredible games i have ever seen, GTA 4, and of course, the mighty Halo 3 this september. and I wont forget Too human either.
it also has a number of cross platform releases with the PS3, which i wont count as i dont think they are console sellers.
the PS3 can look forward to MGS4, which im positive will be a 360 title before long and FF 13. Home, on PS3 is an interesting concept that has me interested to.
As for reliablity, my 360 is one of the newer models, which were released 1st quater 06, and currently has had no issues, the PS3 from what i hear is just as reliable to date.
As for what games are exactly, oh its all the same game if u still press a button. i dont think argument holds water.
The wii might introduce a different method of controll to us, but so far its been horribly supported, and the wii remote is used for nothing more than a mouse pointer in most respects. its a joke to be honest.
its good for a bit of fun, but in depth games will remain on a joypad for now.

XBL is XBox Live. You can buy and download games, from old classics like Pac Man to newer classics like the TMNT Arcade Game or MK III, to original content, like Geometry Wars. Exactly the same as VC with the exception of people making original content for XBL? Impy, maybe you know more on this.
Impy -
What have you seen that's got you so impressed about Mass Effect? Guitar Hero II is keeping me busy, but I need something to do in between now and when my 350 becomes my "Halo 3 Conversion Machine".
I agree that games haven't truly done right by the Wii mote just yet, but I maintain that it's in its early stages. At best, it's following the DS life cycle, where after 6 months, the stylus and touch screen hadn't been used NEARLY as effectively as they are now. At worst, it's Dreamcast Online: an idea that's ahead of its name, but clearly the trendsetter for future ubiquity.

Everything about Mass Effect is impresive, from its graphics, a storyline from Bioware! a near endless galaxy to explore, dynamic on the fly animation, squad based combat, real-time combat. loads of weapons, skills etc...
unless you dislike sci-fi or somthing I cant see whats not to be excited about with ME, its shaping up to be somthing of massive complete epic.
I suggest heading over to game traillers .com and checking out the all the videos.
XBL is rather cool, like Shanti said it allows people to download old arcade games, new game demos, updates for games like new levels or maps to play on.
It also offers trival things like game videos, skins for 360 main interface andother titbits like avatars etc.
Recently they have added HD TV, in the form of downloadable movies and TV episodes.
all the way of things to come!
One of the main differences between the PS3 version of Live is the server setup. MS has access to its own huge server network, so games are hosted at thier end, connecting to 'friends' is as simple as clicking on them and asking them to join a game with you etc... Sony doesnt have the same system in place, and never will, so thier online service works more like online PC gaming, which in comparison to XBL, is very stoneage.
Ob, you really should check out these new consoles, they offer alot more then before, its not just the games, its all the other things...

Oh yes, I totally agree that variety is really important (if you look at the Ps3 there's like three basketball games)Best First wrote:ok, but if you are comparing the consoles i would say its more important to reflect the choice available on them, regardless of review score one site or how long its been out.Obfleur wrote:Tiger Woods Wii got a 7.5, and Wii Sports got 7.8, so they don't qualify (I only include games with a score of 8 or more)Best First wrote:i have a 360 and would not mind a Wii.

That's how i would do it anyway.
But when I made this list I wanted some guidelines that were easy to follow. Making a list with games that got 8 or more was easy.
But making a list that was based on variety (or a list of "These games are awesome no matter the score they got") would be almost impossible for me, since I have only played like four of all the games listed.
But a quick glance at the list of Wii games shows great variety.
There's minigames, puzzle games, an adventure/platform/rpg game, a sports game, a let's-pretend-to-be-doctors!-game.
But yes, I agree that my way of making the list might not be the best, but I wasn't super serious or anything, I just wanted to get people talking
Ah, okey! You are right then - it is unfair to have the XBL games on the list. I had no idea they even existed though I just copy and pasted.Shanti418 wrote:Ob -

Well, one of the reasons I made this thread was to get people talking about the different consoles. I can only afford one of them this year.Impactor returns 2.0 wrote: Ob, you really should check out these new consoles, they offer alot more then before, its not just the games, its all the other things...
I am leaning towards the Wii (I love the VC games and the multiplayer aspect. The only game I've ever played online is Mario Kart DS ) and have been since it was released. But the only game I really want for the Wii is Paper Mario.
And then there's the X360 which has a bunch of cool games and great multiplayer support - but there's no (Nintendo) VC!
The Ps3 is too expensive to be honest. System + extra banana + game = HOLY ****.
Ghaaa... I can't make up my mind.
I want the Wii though

Then get the Wii and have no regrets. You'll have a grand time!
Anybody know anything about a future price drop for the 360? They still haven't had one since the launch, right? Or did they have one when the PS3/Wii came out?

the wii does have the VC console, but I think its over priced - not to mention that ever game made for the snes, nes, and N64 resides on my PC hardrive. and I use either a PS2 pad or an N64 pad to play them. so i never feel the need to buy them.
I prefer the concept behind XBL, at least they update the games slightly, and give them MP options across Live. which IMO is super important.
As an example, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, the last of SSF2 games, and the best, is having the entire game redrawn into 1080p HD. amazing!

Brillant!
My problem with wii right now is thats wii sports is fun, elda is okish, and warior party is a luagh, but thats about it. I want Paper Mario of course...
another gripe I have is all the extras, if u want another controller + nunchuck its gonna cost you at least £30-£40. steep...

You're a god MachanikalAnimal. And I'm poor. But now that I've finally got a holliday substitute job, I might be able to afford a Wii. And possibly a DS too.
It'd be great with some RAM for the comp too.
BTW, here's some sales-data that a great lad on another board posted, and it's quite shocking really. Nin-powah.

Wii and DS Dominate April
May 17, 2007 - The NPD Group today released videogame hardware sales data for April and Nintendo's Wii and DS consoles were again the big winners, as both platforms dominated all competitors. This marks the fourth month running that Nintendo has nabbed the top spots with its respective systems on the hardware sales charts.
Nintendo DS was the overall best-selling system of April with approximately 471,000 units sold -- more than twice that of handheld competitor PSP, which managed 182,000 units sold.
Despite being in limited supply, Wii was, meanwhile, the best-selling console for the month. More than 360,000 new consumers purchased Nintendo's home console in April, nearly doubling the nearest competitor. The second best-selling home system was PlayStation 2 with 193,000 units sold. Microsoft's Xbox 360 managed 174,000 units sold and Sony convinced only 82,000 people to purchase a PlayStation 3 for the month, lower than all analyst estimates.
Nintendo was also the number-one software publisher for the month, releasing the top four best-selling games -- Pokemon Diamond and Pearl for DS, and Super Paper Mario and Wii Play for Wii. The Pokemon titles sold a combined 1.7 million games in about a week.
"Nothing is more valuable in the entertainment world than an evergreen franchise," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president and COO, Nintendo of America. "These new Pokemon titles have cemented their place longside the most enduring intellectual properties of the book, music and movie industries. And that appeal will expand even further with the introduction of Pokemon Battle Revolution to our Wii home console next month."

Uh-oh, the old sales figures.... they are banned on the edge forum for being bollox.
My wii, my GF and I play it but to be honest I think its poorly supported and lacks any decent games, my gf enjoys jumping around the room on wii sports, and warior party, but nothing else, I stay in spirit and make huge gesture to show im playing, when i know how to cheat and just flick my wrist.
I think the wii is a poorly supported idea, a clever gimmick but nothing more.
