I like movies, How 'bout you?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Aren't they Chinese? Any good?
Hmmm, I think you're right. They might be Chinese flicks.

I saw Pan's Labyrinth today, which was lovely, magical and harrowing at the same time.

I'm thinking that it was all true... can't bear to think of it otherwise (but both explanations make equal sense).

You kidding?

The Japanese make the best damn movies.

The heights to which they tend to take their imagination is unrivaled in the world, IMO. And for that reason, a lot of their work is so weird. But I'd say half the time you see something you haven't seen before, and some of their stuff is pure genius. My bro and dad are Japanese film fanatics. They love Akira Korisawas stuff (Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Yojimbo) and movies like House of Flying Daggers and Hero. As I grew up as a big Godzilla fan, the Japanese film industry has a special place in my heart.

Bollywood on the other hand.....
Where did I say that I don't like Japanese movies? I said that 1,800 yen was a bit too much to pay to see stuff on a whim. As for your examples, yes, Akira's work was fantastic and still holds up today. Of course, for good reason, he has not had a movie playing at the cinema in quite some time. Ditto for Godzilla. House of Flying Daggers and Hero are both Hong Kong action flicks (though, ironically enough, I watched both of them theatrically in the US) so don't really apply. I am greatly looking forward to seeing the new Evangelion movie in September, though.

On the list of movies I WILL pay 1,800 yen for: Spider-Man 3 (May 1st), Pirates 3 (May 25th), Harry Potter 5 (end of July), and Transformers (August 4th, urgh).

I watched Kill Bill recently. Now that's an amazing 4 hours!

Visually, I think they are two of the most stunningly beautiful movies I have ever seen.

In fact, I can't think of a movie as visually enticing as Hero. It was fantastic and I would highly recommend it, on the big screen if possible.

Yep, that was my main problem with Pan. It left its allegories murky and undeveloped, and was MUCH more of a drama set in Spain than a fantasy pic

Went and saw TMNT with my younger cousin yesterday, and I can whole-heartedly recommend it! :)

Truly a movie that many age-groups can enjoy.
