Great first episode - a good introduction to the new companion and plenty of weird aliens. I suspect we'll be seeing the J'doon again this series. Martha was believable and just enthusiastic enough, though I won't be sorry if we don't spend as much time with her family as we did with the Tylers - more sci-fi and less soap this time, please. Tennant pulled enough faces to convince me that he was on form and the in-jokes and references were kept at an acceptable level. Some interesting titbits as well - is this the first time it's been mentioned that the Doctor had a brother?
And of course, is this topic's title the new Bad Wolf?

I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

It should get another repeat on BBC3 this week...
The Master has been hinted as being the Doctor's brother in the past.
Really liked Smith & Jones. The trailer clips of Martha didn't do her justice... she actually really impressed me, and there was some good chemistry on show. Best season opener of the new series, and much more likeable than The Runaway Bride (which try as I might, I just can't like).

"Mr. Saxon" gave the soldiers the order to fire on the Raknos ship in The Runaway Bride (watched it again last night) - he's also mentioned on the radio phone-in in Smith and Jones as well as the "Vote Saxon" poster.
Definitely the new Bad Wolf.

Last nights episode (episode 2 with Will Shakespear) was unadulterated babah!!
A few good ideas lost in a script that was propped up with too many 'comedy' stylings. Reminded me of the Sylvester McCoy era. Poo!
But, considering that this is series 3, and this is the first episode I've hated, thats not bad going I suppose. I just hope this was a one-off failure!

I thought it was sumptious. Great use of locations and effects, the head witch was a lot of fun, Shakespeare was a dude, Tennant was great (that scene on the bed was very Doctorish to me - I could imagine any classic series doctor acting like that, er, except Hartnell), lovely soundtrack, I really like Martha and the humour was spot on for me too.
The other two witches were a bit silly I suppose, but faithful to the Shakespeare idea of witches, so...

Yep, although Bad Wolf is still doing the rounds, there was an obscure badground refernce to it in Gridlock in fact.Metal Vendetta wrote:And of course, is this topic's title the new Bad Wolf?
Has he? I'm fairly sure that that is actually (a fairly common) misconception that stems from some misunderstood comments about the original concept for Pertwee's final story (Planet of the Spiders) in which, it was to be revealed, that the Master and the Doctor were aspects of the same person, this of course had to be scrapped when Roger Delgardo unfortunately died (i'd assume that this concept was later recycled in Colin Baker's era as the Valeyard).spiderfrommars wrote: The Master has been hinted as being the Doctor's brother in the past.
There was also a line of the Master's in Planet of Fire (the one with Peri in the bikini) in which, when he apparently get's burnt to death by the Doctor he screams, "Would you do this to your own..." but the sentance is never finished, causing many fans to jump on the old bandwagon and presume that the last word would have been 'brother'. it of course, could have been anything (ranging from 'kind','brother','father','son' and if RTD had his way, probably 'lover').

Ah, thats where I heard it.Legion wrote:it was to be revealed, that the Master and the Doctor were aspects of the same person, this of course had to be scrapped when Roger Delgardo unfortunately died.
Them being brothers doesn't actually make sense as far as I can see anyway. We know they went to the academy together, anything else?
Changing subject... I think Martha is much better than Rose.

Quoting the Doctor from Logopolis: "In many ways, we have the same mind."spiderfrommars wrote:Ah, thats where I heard it.Legion wrote:it was to be revealed, that the Master and the Doctor were aspects of the same person, this of course had to be scrapped when Roger Delgardo unfortunately died.

I'm going to go against the flow here, though, put my neck out and say that I reckon if not the Master, then possibly Omega. No thought process to come to this conclusion, just wanted to throw in a vague haze of doubt.

Ah, good quote, i'd forgotten about that.Rebis wrote:Quoting the Doctor from Logopolis: "In many ways, we have the same mind."spiderfrommars wrote:Ah, thats where I heard it.Legion wrote:it was to be revealed, that the Master and the Doctor were aspects of the same person, this of course had to be scrapped when Roger Delgardo unfortunately died.

Hmmm... how can a TimeLord not be a TimeLord?Rebis wrote: I'm going to go against the flow here, though, put my neck out and say that I reckon if not the Master, then possibly Omega. No thought process to come to this conclusion, just wanted to throw in a vague haze of doubt.
Well, technically, The Master hadn't been a Gallifreyan since 'The Keeper of Traken' when he possessed the body of Tremas, (a Traken) and he was last seen in a human body (Bruce the Paramedic) being sucked into the Eye of Harmony, so he technically wouldn't be a Timelord any more, plus would be out of telepathic contact of the Doctor... and since the Eye of Harmony probably doesn't exist anymore, he might be on the loose (and quite pissed off).
The other possibilities include (on an outside bet) Romana, last seen in E-Space, a dimension outside of N(ormal) Space, so might have been saved from the Time War... however, that would then ignore all the books and audios with her in, as well as the article in the Annual (written by RTD himself) in which she's returned home and become President (like in the books and audios), so that's out of the window...
To be honest, i'm a bit concerned that it's got something to do with Face of Bo himself... because of the line in Confidential (i think) about his last words being explained along with who he really was, later in the series... if he turns out to be some sort of TimeLord or connected to the Doctor in some way, i'm gonna be mightily annoyed as that's a bit crap IMHO.
Yeah. The guff in the hospital on the moon... she was basically voicing what I was thinking for most of it. Expositing on her own, rather than standing about asking questions waiting for the Doctor to spell it out.spiderfrommars wrote:I just find Martha refreshing. And real.

What did you guys make of the latest Dalek offering?

I thought it was, generally, a good episode, however I am reserving judgement on the human/dalek hybrid. although the dalek's hesitation to contaminate themselves was well done, but of course, the Emperor himself had already done something a bit similar back in the first new series when he used Human's as the basis for his rebuilt Dalek army.

I enjoyed the old schoolness of it all. Wasn't totally convinced by 1930s New York but am happy to see the production team stretch themselves. Not a big fan of the pig things, but it did result in at least one spooky scene down in the sewers. Always loving the Daleks (personally I don't think they're overused) and its cool to see them be so manipulative. As for the thing at the end... can't say it was a surprise (boo Radio Times) but should be interesting.
I thought we were on the brink of a Rutan cameo too. Turned out not to be.
Btw, we get the overnight audience figures here at work. Last night's BBC 3 repeat was higher than some of the Torchwood premieres.

Yeah, Daleks are at their best when they're being manipulative, that was one of the reasons i lived the first season's 'Dalek' episode so much! I also like it when they're being chatty (like in this episode, talking about the human race and such) as opposed to rolling around frantically shouting 'exterminate'.
Actually their 'banter' with the Cybusmen in Doomsday last series was quite good too... "this is not war, this is pest control!" heck, i'm just a Dalek fan

That's no great surprise to be honest, Who has a much bigger audience in general than Torchwood anyway, plus Torchwood, despite being highly anticipated met a fair bit of criticsm and it's audience did start to tail off as the series went on as people started to realise that the underlying failings of the programme weren't being addressed. I'm eager to see what changes (if any) are made to improve upon these problems in the next series.spiderfrommars wrote:Btw, we get the overnight audience figures here at work. Bah! Missed the first 10 mins on Sat, due to the outdated info that said it was starting at 6:50! Then went and forgot to watch the repeat on Sunday! Gonna have to wait until Friday, now, to see why "one to the past, one to the future" has added "and another one to the past"! Oh well. Watched most of it, anyway.
I wonder if any fallout from this two-parter is going to be present in the season finale, as has happened in the previous seasons.
So, anyone think the Dalek-Human hybrid should be some sort of Kaled mutant, rather than Dalek, considering it's bipedal?

I actually thought it got better as it went on tho. But the first six episodes were just so haphazard - one week great, the next embarassingly naff.Legion wrote: it's audience did start to tail off as the series went on as people started to realise that the underlying failings of the programme weren't being addressed.
