howdy y'all!
I love things that have the potential to end in tears, hence being a Spurs (Originals) fan.
I intend to bugger off and live in Manhattan this year. I know it is bloody hard to emmigrate, that's fine, because I only intend on having a little adventure through the summer and a tourist visa is fine for that.
I've done some research and have some questions re: renting a place.
In random order:
1) It seems rent is by the month, and that this is standard across the board. Is this accurate?
2) Most of what I've seen suggests you sign your lease for 1 year... but I'd imagine its possible to negotiation for the quarter... true?
3) If I was on 'holiday', but wanted a job, eg: bar work, do I need a work permit... or is my tourist visa fine for temporary jobs... and are american employers open to 'cheeky employment'?
So, any help would be much appreciated, cheers =)

I have some friends who are moving to Manhatten soon... also some friends in New Jersey. I can put you in contact.
Try renting from people rather than big organizations. That way, you can be frank about what might happen if they raise the rent. Usually people are more willing to let you pay less and not raise it. Also, person-to-person means that you don't have to do things like pay the first and last month's rent at once, or pay a ridiculously huge cleaning deposit. And, of course, it's easier to negotiate. If you're going for the summer, see about housing for NYU or one of the local schools. Take some classes if you have to and then you can live in the dorms easily.

I was thinking of going over Summer (June, July, August), but now my mates want me to go on holiday I may delay it.
I actually went in November myself. For no other reason then I could... although that was more a tad fortuitous on my part and not a general theme.
I thought it were class and would love to go back for a longer break.
