Look out UK, I'm coming for you (March, 22d)

Post by Obfleur » Thu Feb 01, 2007 10:10 pm

Long story short: my girlfriend has moved to Glasgow. At first I wasn't gonna go visit her - but the plans have changed.

This means that I'll be going to the UK sometime in the near future (and it might be more than one visit).
If any of you Londoners wanna hook up with me for an evening (or two, depending on the airlines and stuff like that) just say the word.

Here's the deal: There's like a million airlines to choose from. The cheapest one I've found this far is Ryanair. Their departure times are crappy though.
I'll land in London, Stansted at 23:20, thursday evening. This means that I'll need a place to crash. And I have no idea how far away from London, Stansted is, etc.
Then come friday. Transfans meeting at a pub on friday evening? Or you, the dude or dudette I crashed at, can just take me around town or something.
After that I'll yet again need a place to crash at.
On saturday I'll fly to Glasgow and ya'll be free from swedes.

I understand that it's a big pain in the ass going to an airport late thursday evening to pick up a confused swede so I am really not expecting a lot of replys with a bunch of people fighting over me (if there's a supercheap hostel at Stansted please do tell!).
And this is also why I am gonna use my interwebs skillz tomorrow to look for a better arrival time (on a friday) at another airline :) I'll update the info here if this whole idea sounds interesting.

Also: when me and the missus agrees on a date for me to visit her, I'll post it here and then I'll probably need a "Hell yes, you may stay at my place"-reply as soon as possible (so the airline tickets doesn't get sold out/more expensive).
If you are a brave soul you can PM me your telephon number and I can text you the dates as soon as I have them.

Cheers mates. It would be great to meet up with you after all these years.

I did the RyanAir to London once too. :)

You can take a train from the airport into London which takes about an hour and is very expensive (you might want to check that before you book the ticket because for me it was more expensive than my insanely cheap flight), or take a bus which takes even longer but is cheaper.

Have fun!

I wanna spend as little money as possible. So I guess I'll take the bus (or if it's possible, book a train ticket two weeks before the trip [in sweden the tickets gets more expensive the closer you come to the departure]).

Thanks for the info :)

I took the Stansted bus a couple of times. It adds up, but it might still be cheaper overall than Heathrow.

You'll have to throw down some scratch for the tube, though.

There's a train from Stanstead to Liverpool Street which is easy and fairly cheap :) When are you coming?

Sweet :)

I think I'll come in two - three weeks or something.
Might be longer (at the moment my girlfriend doesn't even have a place to live).

cool!

if i remember correctly (and i probably don't)... the train from stanstead costs in the region of 15 quid, which is a bit steep for a train if you ask me, but then they have something of a monopoly on the task at hand... :(

When flying back from Stockholm last year, I bought a discounted Stanstead Express ticket on the plane, it might be worth checking that out. I was supposed to get a discounted train ticket with my plane ticket, but the plane tickets were bought as a pair and my friend used the reference number to get her train ticket. I remember they were unhelpful at this point.

yeah, that's true! depends on the airline but i think they knock a few quids off the price if you order through them.

I just realized that I will travel back in time when I go to the UK. So I think I'll arrive at 22:30. Not 23:30 (if I travel with that airline, bla bla).

I have one question about the train: in Sweden the train tickets are cheaper if you buy them two weeks before you travel (instead of buying them the same day).
I just go out on the interwebs, choose the dates and what not, pay with my VISA-card and get a number. When I get to the train station I take this number and enter it on a machine, and POW... I get my train ticket.
Is something similar possible in da uk?

I have no problem paying £15 for the train ticket (you guys are totaly worth it ;)), but if I can get it cheaper, why the hell not.

Depending on who you fly with, you should get a reference number with your plane ticket - then you can go to the Stanstead Express site, enter your reference, and you should get a discounted ticket...though as I said, I think it's possible to buy one on the plane anyway.

You're welcome to crash on the sofa if you need to :)

Hey Ob, be sure to let me, um, I mean us, know where your gf ends up in Glasgow.
For, um...safety or pub-recommending purposes. Or something.

At the moment she is living near Ibrox :) (I have no idea how near "near" is though).

I just called my GF.
Man do I love your phone signals.

It's time!

March, 1st.
Thursday evening. 23:20 (will the bus/train be leaving this late at night?).
I'll need a place to crash.

Then I'll spend the whole friday lurking around London or whatever if you work. Then beers, or something?
Then I'll need a place to stay again.

Then on saturday my plane for Glasgow leaves at 11.55.

Is anyone up for the task?
I'll need an answer, at the latest, tomorrow afternoon.
And if you say "yes" you gotta be 100% sure.
I don't wanna end up having to spend the night on the airport, or on the streets of London :o

Cheers

I cannot, my (only) friend's birthday celebration is on the 2nd march and she would cry her stupid face off if I didn't go.

By an incredible coincidence, I have next week off (for no good reason).

Nothing planned, so I suppose I could journey up to London for a meet on the Friday.

Hmm, that'd be interesting. A London TransFans meet featuring no London TransFans.

:(

Since nobody answered I booked tickets taking me directly to Glasgow.

I am pretty sure I'll visit my GF a couple of times though. So there'll be more chances for a transfans meet if ya'll interested :)

Well, the ticket price hasn't changed today (compared to yesterday).
So it looks like I can wait a while longer before I book the tickets.

So next time I'm planning on going I can wait a day or two longer, and give you a chance to reply :)

And if everything goes as planned, I'll probably be visiting her two or three weeks after this visist.
