Pan's Labyrinth

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Anyone else seen this yet?

It was so amazing. I've never been so pleased-- and scared and gut-wrenched-- by a movie all at once. A real fantasy. Like something Gaiman would dream up in his Sandman days.

I'm looking forward to seeing it soon. I only just found out yesterday that "now playing in select cities" means my city, too!

I'll probably like it, but given my specific taste in films, I doubt I'll fawn over it as much as others have, or as much as I have over Children of Men.

I thought Pan was real... I think it followed some good techniques of fantasy in that the audience didn't really ever have to decide what was real and what wasn't. In fact, the only part of the movie I didn't like

SPOILERS

was the ending, where the girl is lying dead. I thought the movie should have ended with her in the fairie world.

When did it come out in the UK?

Movie came out about 6 months ago... iirc...

Now, wait a sec...

SPOILERS

In the version I've seen, she does in deed get into fairy land.

She dies, but that is part of the test to get there, you know?

But you def see her there with king, queen and Pan.

[composite word including 'f*ck'] me though, that guy that eats the fairies... Bit naughty!

That was mint. i loved that bit with the scary baby-eater.

Yeh, I guess you could take it as "she died to get into fairie-land." I just figured that literalists would come away from the movie thinking she'd died happy in her final delusion. Which is not an interpretation of the movie I like. You listening, Guillermo?

SPOILERS

I think the two major things that ;say 'real faries' are:

The root - ok, she could have imagine that - but how can she imagine her mum being fooked, having a miracle recovery, then dying as soon as it was destroyed?

Also: locked in the room, but gets out using the chalk.

And I know the Captain couldn't see Pan, but isn't there something about adults / evil ****** / people who dont believe now being able to see fauns?

I'll check it out...

Nothing about adults and fauns in Encyclopedia Mythica. But I've heard something similar as well.

I gotta say, I was a bit underwhelmed. Perhaps all the hype.

It was marketed as "ooh, a trip to a mystical fantasy wonderland set against the backdrop of facism, the wonders of the world of Pan will stay with you long after you leave the theater, look at all the fancy CGI creatures", but to me it was more "A quiet good drama about facism SPRINKLED with this faun giving this girl things to do every once in awhile.

My wife had her eyes closed and her hands over her belly, protecting baby, most of the time.
