Your Top Ten Movie Moments

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Your Top Ten Movie Moments

Post by Yaya » Sat Jul 29, 2006 12:08 pm

In no particular order, what are your top ten movie moments of all time?

Mine:

1. Watership Down
When BigWig finally openly acknowledges Hazel as his chief rabbit.
Bigwig: "My chief told me to defend this run.."
General Woundworth: "Your.........chief?"

2. Superman II
When Superman unexpectedly crushes General Zods hand after reversing the process to keep himself safe in the molecule chamber, while the three villians are stripped of their powers outside the chamber.

3. Terminator II:Judgement Day
After being frozen in liquid nitrogen and shattered into a thousand pieces, the T-1000 reveals its incredible resiliency as the liquid nitrogen is melted away, to the shock and awe of Sarah and John Connor.

4. Shawshank Redemption
The conclusive ending with Morgan Freeman narrating how Andy DuFrain managed to not only escape from Shawshank, but turn the tables on the corrupt warden.

5. The Count of Monte Cristo (featuring Jim Caviezal as Edmond)
In a very Shawshankish way, Edmond turns the tables on those who framed him by returning the favor and setting up his betrayers. When he sends magistrate Villefort in a carriage to the torture chamber, Chateau D'if, he gives him a gun which unbeknownst to the magistrate is empty. Villefort puts the gun in his mouth and pulls the trigger. Nothing happens, at which point Edmond sticks his head through the carriage window and comments, "Did you really think I would make it that easy?" Sweeeeeet.

6. Jaws
The entire ending with the three guys. Classic stuff.
Hooper: "That's a twenty footer"
Quint: "Twenty-five.......three tons of em."

7. The Empire Strikes Back
After Yoda amazingly lifts his pupils X-wing out of the swamp, Luke incredulously stares on and comments "I...I can't believe it". To which Yoda responds, "That..is why you fail." Still get chills from that.

8. The Return of the Jedi
When Vader throws the Emperor over railing. Probably in most people's top ten.

9. Superman II (again)
At the end of the movie, when Superman beats up on that thug in the diner who beat him up earlier when he was stripped of his powers.
"Oh, uh, I've been, uh......working out", pushing his glasses up on his face.

10. Return of the King, The Lord of the Rings
Sam: "I can't carry it for you, Mr. Frodo. But I can carry you!"

oooh so many- some of my faves in no order:

"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"
Blondie and Tuco are making their way down the road disguised as Confederate soldiers- when suddenly in the distance they see an army heading towards them. Seeing them wearing grey, Tuco jumps up and starts yelling "Hurrah for General Lee! Down with General Grant! God loves us because he hates the Yankees!"

Blondie slowly replies,

"No, God does not love us because he hates idiots also..."

The army pull to a stop and their commander dusts himself down- revealing the blue uniform of the Union under the dirt.

"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King"
Theoden's fantastic speech, before the Last Ride of the Rohirrim- when they gallop full tilt towards the massed armies of Sauron, fully believing it's to their total doom, yet they break through the Orc front line and the Orcs flee as line after line of horsemen ride down on top of them. Almost brings tears to the eyes :)

"The Transformers: The Movie"
One of my sinful pleasures. The beautious moment when the camera turns into Prime's eyes and he utters "Megatron must be stopped. No matter the cost." He can see his own death on the cards, but he carries on anyway. To do anything else just wouldn't be Optimus Prime.

"Singin' in the Rain"
Both 'Make Em Laugh' (which I performed on stage for a charity event) and the title 'Singin' In the Rain'. As my father said- if you had to pick one person to dance for your life, it would have to be Gene Kelly. His movements, his earth-shattering smile. It's all there.

"Superman"
Marlon Brando's fantastic line "It is for this reason, their capacity for good, that I have sent them you." is beautiful, but nothing makes me smile in such a good way than the final shot of Christopher Reeves soaring past the camera into space with that million-dollar smile of his.

"Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"
I don't like most musicals, but the few I do like I cherish :) So much goodness in Chitty, but probably the most lovely is "Hushaby Mountain", which is so beautiful and so simple again it brings tears to the eyes.

"Once Upon a Time in America"
The final shot of Noodles (DeNiro), seen in his youth with a stuporous smile on his face as his disappears into an opium enduced trance. Probably the only time in his life he was anything vaguely like happy.

"Edward Scissorhands"
I'm a total sissy for most movies, and the ending reduces me to a wreck every single time. All alone in his fairy tale castle, despite the horrors inflicted on him by petty, back-stabbing suburbia, he still feels nothing but love and continues to create unearthly ice sculptures in memory of his one true love.

"Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark"
My favourite Indie movie and with one of the most dark and untold endings Spielberg ever devised. The Ark, the most powerful thing in creation, being nailed into a box marked only with some obscure reference number and wheeled away into a huge warehouse- filled, presumably, with thousands of such ancient and magical secrets. All kept away from prying eyes, never to be touched again.

"Dumbo"
Whilst the animation suffered at the hands of the strike going on at the time (through Walt Disney's intransigently poor treatment of his staff) Dumbo is still rescued for me by an enjoyable script, likeable characters and my favourite moment: 'Baby Mine', probably the most touching song Disney introduced into their movies.

Those are some pretty good moments.

How could I forget the Ride of the Rohirrim!

Definitely a tear jerker and another of Depp's classic performances.

Unforgettable moment, no doubt. That, and the beginning of the film when he takes the idol. I never forget "Give me the idol, I give you the whip!" Did you know that guy played Dr. Octopus in the last Spiderman movie?

One of the greatest films of all time, never mind Disney flicks. If "Baby Mine" is that song when Dumbo is holding his Mom in that cage where she's shackled, that is one of the saddest Disney moments ever for me. And I remember the goosebumps of happiness over my skin when he actually flew, shooting all those peanuts at everybody! :) And even today, you will catch me singing "When I See an Elephant Fly!" in the shower every once in a while. And damn proud of it too. I think Dumbo is not shown so often because they felt the crows portrayed blacks as idiots, but I really liked those guys. Another Disney movie you can't find is "Song of the South", a film that I really enjoyed as a kid, singing "Zipadeedoodah" for months after seeing it.

Solely off the top of my head, and discounting Serenity and Shaun of the Dead (because I could fill a Top 20 just from those films alone)...

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Frustrated with a heavy who won't talk, Harry decides to take matters into his own hands with a horrifically ill-conceived game of Russian Roulette. Perry's reaction and the ensuing argument make the entire sequence genius. Especially considering who calls during the aftermath.

The Untouchables
Yeah, it's the pram going down the stairs that most people remember... but the bit that follows is the real highlight for me. Lying on his back, propping up said pram, Andy Garcia slams a bullet right on target into a mobster who was using a hostage as a shield. From distance. "I got him."

The Godfather
Marked for death, Michael calmly goes about his business whilst we intercut to see every threat to him being taken care of. The precision of the mass surgical strike against his enemies and subsequent murder of his brother in law illustrate perfectly what a cold hearted bastard he's become.

Back to the Future Part II
Doc sends Marty back home... and Marty comes running back around the corner. Just the way the scenes from the second mesh perfectly with the first make this entire sequence (and what precedes it) bliss.

Saving Private Ryan
The landing at the beginning. Barring slasher films and cheap shock horror, this is perhaps the most relentlessly brutal thing that I've ever seen committed to film.

Shawshank Redemption
When the Warden has Tommy killed "trying to escape." The point at which we realise exactly what lengths he'll go to in order to keep his perks.

Swingers
Most films go for some big all out ending. Here, it's all about the little things. He doesn't call her back. He's moved on. It's beautiful. It's a resolution. It's money.

Interview With The Vampire
"I presume I need no introduction." Just one of those moments that burnt onto my psyche as absolute gold when I first saw it. Wonderful.

Mystery Men
"That doesn't make any sense. He wouldn't be able to see."

Blade
The club scene at the beginning. The shower of blood. The Pump Panel mix of Confusion. The carnage that follows. Fantastic.
Grrr. Argh.

Yep, that's the song. The crows are some of my favourite characters from it too :) The ending is pure shmaltzy indulgence too- he's a star, his friend the mouse is his manager and his mom even has her own star compartment in the circus train :)

I no order and entirely todays choices (ask me tomorow and I'll give you ten different ones no doubt...)

Star Trek III: The destruction of the Enterprise. From the black comedy of the Klingon boarding party leaning in to have a good listen to the auto destruct coutdown through to Kirk and McCoy's touching moment as they watch their home for the last 15 odd years burn up in the sky this is a brilliant moment in a otherwise lacklustre film. For some reason the way the writing on the saucer section burns up allways gave me chills as a kid. And on a similar note...

Star Trek IV: It's cheesy, it's illogical (how quickly can Star Fleet throw one of those ships together anyway?) and resets the status quo after a few films that had tried to introduce new things to Trek... But the entire banter in the shuttle at the end over what ship they're going to get, the double bluff with the Excelsior and the first appearence of the Enterprise A complete with Kirk's "My friends, we've come home" allways puts a big dumb smile on my face.

The Sixth Sense: The moment that has you going "What the hell..." before it all sinks in and you realise it all makes sense. Unless you're one of the smart arses who guessed.

South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut: Lots of good bits here, but my favorite is "operation get behind the darkies". "Lotsa people gonna die?"

John Carpenter's The Thing: The autopsy bit up to "You have get to be ******* kidding!".

Shaun of the Dead: Opening credits through to end credits (well, if Brend won't do it...)

The Man Who Knew To Much (Hollywood version): The "black" colour on a guys face comig of in James Stewart's hands is a wonderfull wtf moment, that nicely subverts the dodgy prectice of the time of simply blacking up white actors to play prominant non-white roles.

Escape From New York: The suprisingly British President of America is rescued and has the vital tape back. When Snake asks him about all the deaths that have happened he blatently doesn't give a toss. If only he had Snake might have given him the right tape...

Beauty and the Beast: "Be... our... guest, be our guest..."

Flash Gordon: See Shaun of the Dead.

Entirely with you on Trek III- the bit where the saucer explodes always makes me shiver. Very well done.

I'd also like to put in a good note for the end of Trek VI: Undiscovered Country, in which they fly off and disobey orders one last time and the last shot is of the Enterprise disappearing away into the stars :)

I find these things next to impossible, so I'll just go for ten moments I really like, as I honestly don't think I could do my 'all time' top ten.

The Devils Rejects

The ending is bitter-sweet. I know they're a gang of serial killers who've commited unspeakable attrocities, but I didn't want them to die-the use of 'Free Bird' as the song to go with that scene is about as perfect as it could have been.

Transformers the Movie

The bit right after the one Karl chose, where Optimus shows exactly why he's the leader of the Autobots-seeing him boost up into the air, and somersault over the Decepticons whilst picking them off still makes want to punch the air and shout 'YES!' like a little kid.

The Long Kiss Goodnight

My favourite action movie-so many bits to choose from, but a half-dead Sam Jackson sitting up in the drivers seat of that car and coming to the rescue makes me have a happy-especially after his "Please God, just once in my life, let me do something right" speech.

The Last Boy Scout

"I swear-if I make it out of this alive, I'll dance a f*cking jig". And he does.

Equilibrium

Christian Bale, exposed as a traitor and member of the resistance, is hooked up to a lie detector which is going ballistic as he fights with his emotions:

Dupont: And you, Preston, the supposed savior of the resistance, are now its destroyer, and, along with them, you've given me yourself... calmly... coolly... entirely without incident.

At this point, the machine 'flat lines' showing Preston to be completely in control of himself

Technician: Oh sh*t...

Preston: Not without incident.

What happens from this point on is one possibly my favourite cinematic ass-kicking of all time.

Mallrats

Any scene involving Brodie is a winner, but his 'Superman' speech is gold, Jerry-Gold!

T.S. Quint: But they're engaged.

Brodie: Doesn't matter, can't happen.

T.S. Quint: Why not? It's bound to come up.

Brodie: It's impossible, Lois could never have Superman's baby. Do you think her fallopian tubes could handle the sperm? I guarantee you he blows a load like a shotgun right through her back. What about her womb? Do you think it's strong enough to carry her child?

T.S. Quint: Sure, why not?

Brodie: He's an alien, for Christ sake. His Kyrptonian biological makeup is enhanced by earth's yellow sun. If Lois gets a tan the kid could kick right through her stomach. Only someone like Wonder Woman has a strong enough uterus to carry his kid. The only way he could bang regular chicks is with a kryptonite condom. That would kill him.

Dawn of the Dead (remake)

The opening credits showing the end of the world.

Leon

When the cops assault his appartment-right from the upside-down-over-the-door shootout, to the the point where he gives Gary Oldmans' corrupt cop his parting gift.

Constantine

He finally gets redemption and is welcomed into heaven-unfortunately, he's managed to piss the Devil off so much that Satan saves his life in the hope that Constantine will slip up and become hell-bound once more.

Hellraiser III

J.P. Monroe: Jesus Christ!

Pinhead: Not quite.

And oddly the effects there look better than the Enterprise D crashlanding into a model railway from Generations.

I'd have included that but having three Trek moments in there would have resulted in Brend hunting me down and killing me. The bit where the torpedo goes all the way through the saucer section allways gets me as well. I still say they should have kept to the original idea of Kirk dying by taking the bullet for the President though.

Cheesy, but still incredibly uplifting, I gotta vote for it too. :)

Which leaves me with 5 more....

The Godfather

Michael in the restaurant in the final moments before he shoots them both dead.

Scarface

The shootout at the end.

Apocalyspe Now

The helicopter attack.

The Spy Who Loved Me

The ski jump. Kitsch and cool simultaneously.

Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.

The 'Leap of Faith' remains my fave movie scene of all time. Even now when I watch it I'm still on the edge of my seat!

Don't know if I can do ten off the top of me head...luckily you guys are an inspiration. And I'm cheating by leaving off Shaun of the Dead also.

2001
HAL's death scene.
His voice is so controlled and used for effect earlier that to have it break down and listen to the character mentally regress is difficult.

Star Wars
Deathstar Trench Run.
The sense of franticness, the this is It and we're not going to do it feeling, with all the reb pilots expressing such emotive moments with the like 2 lines or something they all get each.

Star Tek II
When Kirk finally notices that, like most people in Star Trek, Khan only thinks in 2 planes and so drops the Enterprise straight down, confounding the impressively-pecced villain; then you see the Enterprise climbing up from behind the Reliant at an angle reminiscent of a bird of prey about to snatch a mousse off and rip it to bits and feel a kind of sickening joy as you realise Khan is now totally, truly ******.
Kirk expresses this feeling with a snarled '"Fire!" than could just as well have been "Kick his ******* head in!"
Get in.

Platoon
Elias doing the Jesus Christ Pose under repeated bullet-strikes as the grunts bug out and the music crescendos. Charlie Sheen's murderous whipglare at Berenger, and Berenger's slightly embarassed shiftiness, as if he's been caught looking rather too earnestly at porn or something, instead of deliberatley leaving a man behind to die (whom we know he actually shot). What a c***.

Aliens
Every scene with Hudson in it. Pick one.

Donnie Darko

Montage with everyone crying, and then the little waves between Mrs Darko and Gretchen.
Don't care if people want to be cynical or are sick of that version of Mad World, I found it ridiculously touching the first time I saw it.

Blade Runner
Tears in Rain.
Unexpected and elevates a film that you're already wondering about to a higher level. Changes the whole tone of the film and can quite mess with you if you didn't know what the movie was about the first time you saw it.

True Romance
The two-hander between Big Chris Walken and Dennis Hopper. Mesmeric performances appear out of nowhere that lead you through a whole gamut of reactions.

King of New York
The bit at the end with the freaky stand-off and hostage situation and then the way the camera disspassionatley follows Frank as he walks up onto the street and into a taxi and now you're just going to watch him bleed out in the back of this cab and that this is it, end of the line and all the dreams. Just point a camera at Christopher Walken and you get gold. And I love the use of colour.

Anchorman
The outrageous streetfight between the news teams and the conversation afterward:

Ron Burgundy: Boy, that escalated quickly... I mean, that really got out of hand fast.
Champ Kind: It jumped up a notch.
Ron Burgundy: It did, didn't it?
Brick Tamland: Yeah, I stabbed a man in the heart.
Ron Burgundy: I saw that. Brick killed a guy. Did you throw a trident?
Brick Tamland: Yeah, there were horses, and a man on fire, and I killed a guy with a trident.
Ron Burgundy: Brick, I've been meaning to talk to you about that. You should find yourself a safehouse or a relative close by. Lay low for a while, because you're probably wanted for murder.

Everyone puts in very straight Monty Python performances, great, unexpected stuff.

These lists always make me feel like Jack Black in High Fidelity. Nonetheless:

Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring

Frodo's flashback at the end: "All you have to decide is what to do with the time that has been given to you." Without deliberate religious overtones, without a long, overdone speech, Peter Jackson made me weep like a baby over the sheer beauty and power, the NEED I have to believe this.

Harold and Maude

They're in bed together. Yep, the twenty-year old slept with the eighty-year old. You've got to love it when you think, "This movie won't go there..." and it DID.

Serenity

"This is a good death. A good end for a man who has done fine works." He looks into the man's eyes and says this. The power of belief, in the face of murder, right there. The evil of most of world history, in one tiny moment, right there.

Shadowlands

There's a bit at the end where the CS Lewis character says something like "I don't need all the answers anymore." What I loved about this movie (having watched it after I became agnostic) was that I didn't have to believe in what Lewis does to understand his character as someone who believes he has all the answers.

There are more... I'll speak later.[/b]

Just gonna add this.

Tombstone - Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russel) gos to face bad boy cowboy Jhonny Ringo (Michael Biehn) in a duel to the death, which will decide for the time being who owns the wild west sp to speak.
Wyatts best friend Doc Holiday (Val kilmers best role evarrrrr) Is the fastest shot in the west, but has TB and is so ill he cant even get out of bed as hes coughing up his insides.
WE "I cant beat Ringo can I?"
DH"No...."

Ringo waits for WE and mouths off at the shadowy figure that approachs beliving it to be WE - Instead its DH who has risen from the dead to protect his friend WE.
DH "im your huckleberry"
JR "Hey my fight aint with you Holiday!"
DH "Oh? I beg to differ"

The duel is wicked - fastest draw ever...

Leon getting shot in the back

Truman escaping the Truman show + His little moment when he's trying to make the face of Silvia from all his cutouts.

****** robocop - that film is ******* ace - loads in that, couldn't pick out a single one.

Going to go into tv if I may - got shivers when I first saw the first episode of Twin Peaks + Leland Palmer's death.

Another TV one - 5 mins to sundown - Vaughan trapped in a room with 4 coffins, trying to come to terms with the fact he's screwed and composing himself enough to blow his own brains out in Ultraviolet.

MJ Seeing Peter parkers unmasked face in Spider-man 2

Die Hard - there are lots, so many classic lines in this film:

Dwayne T. Robinson: You listen to me you little asshole.
John McClane: Asshole? I'm not the one who just got butt-****** on national TV, *Dwayne*.

The two FBI agents are funny as [composite word including 'f*ck'] as well.

Groundhog day - Bill Murray's 'perfect day' at the end.

Ghostbusters - "Yes it's true. This man has no dick!"

ok, so I dont know how many I've done. *could do more, wants to cheat*

argh. you have made me want to cheat as well.

Plus your mention of FBI agents has made me think of Grosse Point Blank.

I was thinking of that too -

Martin Q. Blank: There's a contract out on your life. Believe me. I was hired to kill you, but I'm not going to do it. It's either because I'm in love with your daughter or because I have a newfound respect for life.

Mr. Grocer: [following in van] That punk is either in love with that guy's daughter or he has a newfound respect for life.

Mirror in the bathroom FIGHT!

Def watching that film when I get home now...

Also Shawshank - that film is one long kwalitee moment.

Purple Rain:

Ladies and Gentlemen, THE REVOLUTION! *orchestral noise Fades up*

Last thing I say when leaving the bathroom on my way for a night out is "You're a handsome devil. What's your name?"

The "hired killer" route is one I'll definitely go down at any school reunion. That and the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang "I'm retired - I invented dice" thing.
Grrr. Argh.

Most of mine have already gone, so I'll just do my list:
Aliens - the whole "escape from medlab" sequence is just wonderful.
Die Hard - really hard to pick a favourite moment, but the scene at the end where Holly sees John for the first time since he disappeared, and can only utter "Jesus Christ!" and he answers with "Hi, honey" is awesome.
The Return of the King - "We forgots the sound of trees, we forgots the taste of bread. We even forgets our own name."
TFTM - Prime's bit. from the "Megatron must be stopped" line until he falls from his wounds.
Robocop - I'll go for any scene with Bob Morton in
Mullholland Drive - When they finally stop being so coy and just get it on already :D :D :D And of course when the penny starts to drop that it's all gone horribly, horribly wrong...
Shaun of the Dead - the bit where Nick Frost winds on the camera
South Park - for the sheer joy of it, the Uncle****er song
The Crow - "I'm coming home, Shelly", it's so tragic. Gets me every time.
Jay and Bob Strike Back - Jay's rap at the beginning. The sheer pleasure of swearing that much.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Robocop - damm that film is the best man and machine clash ever. also happens to be my fav film. "Can you fly Bobby?"
Its so dark and gritty.

Aliens
- Lets rock! Aliens has that real set grit, wicked detail and is an amazing action flick.

Platoon - Elias dying on his knees arms in the air. Love this film.

Scarface - This has got to be one of the best Gangster movies ever, its not the godfather but it has its own qualities. "fly pelican fly!" - If u havent seen this, u must.

Ferris B
- Best teen movie ever made, its so wonderfull...

Clarence Boddicker: [stabs Robocop in the chest with metal rod] Sayonara, Robocop!
[Robocop stabs him in the throat; Clarence screams in pain as he staggers away and collapses]
RoboCop: [after stabbing Clarence] Lewis! Lewis!
[looks up]
Lewis: Murphy... I'm a mess...
RoboCop: They'll fix you. They fix everything.

speaking of music - what was that track released early 90's perhaps that had the sample from Robocop "you have 10 seconds to comply" ?
Might have been a techno mix of some sorts...
