Maccabi Haifa should not be forced to play their Uefa Champions League third qualifying round tie in Liverpool, says the head of a Maccabi supporters' club.
The Qiryat Eliezer side have been drawn against Liverpool and the first leg, on 8 or 9 September, is due to be held in the troubled area of Liverpool.
"They should not be considering going," said Yaakov Shachar of the Maccabi Haifa International Supporters' Club.
"Everybody's at risk. They would be a target from the moment they arrived."
Liverpool Manager Rafa Benitez moved to reassure worried fans.
"There are many Maccabi Haifa fans in Liverpool and I hope the match can go ahead," he said.
"We would love the match to be in Liverpool but it could go ahead in Merseyside which is quiet."
But Shachar added: "Surely common sense should prevail. I have heard a Liverpool official saying the game can be played in Anfield where everything is quiet.
"But that's nonsense. Security cannot be ensured anywhere in Liverpool.
"This is a dangerous, volatile situation in Liverpool and safety for everyone, the team, the officials, fans, referee everybody, should be the main consideration.
"Uefa have known this situation was coming. They have known about the state there for ages now and they knew Liverpool were in the draw. They should already have said Liverpool's home leg has to be played in a neutral country."
