This makes me sick.

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

President Bush promises that he will veto a bill that would allow federal funding for stem cell research.

Does he not understand how significant stem cell research is? Does he not understand the applications of it? Imagine if such a veto had been promised about penicillin!

""Just because the budding lives would not survive does not mean that we should ghoulishly conduct experiments on them,"

has there ever been a statement more devoid of scientific merit?

Where, in any religion, does it say that you can't extract microscopic tissue from the recently conceived to help stop millions from suffering and/or dying?

No matter how you slice it, you have to reach pretty damn far to get that idea from The Bible. It seems that the most powerful man on earth has made just such a leap.

Let's try to leave religion out of this for a bit, if possible. What non-religious reasons could he have to thwart medical science?

He's doing a piss-poor job of it then. His approval rating is at, what, like 20 percent? That means that the only people he has left are the inbred, gun toting, bible-thumping (yet illiterate) scumbags who couldn't spell their own name at knifepoint but somehow manage to vote Republican in every election.

So? He's not getting re elected. What does he care?

Repubs have plenty of time to distance themselves from him and court the middle before the elections.

And if we have "intelligent design" in textbooks, I'm not particularly surprised that we don't have stem cell research.

That's not as widespread as many believe it is.

I understand why some constraints should be put in place in certain respects but to just veto all of stem cell research is potty.
Instead of just banning the entire thing cant some laws be put in place to restrict certain kinds of research?

It's not widespread, but it exists.

To use an inflammatory analogy, if there's only KKK in one city in the USA, then violent, hateful racism hasn't been stamped out.

Not to mention intolerance of gays, pro lifers, etc...

Why should laws be put in place to restrict any kinds of research? Why would you want to?

Because, every single movie/book/video game involving genetic engineering has shown us that things COULD go horribly wrong due to the questionable morals of some human beings.

Zombies and human/animal hybrids are a ways off. We're safe...at least for now.

This is ridiculous. In order to use some forms of artificial fertilization, multiple embryos must be created and then the healthiest one inserted into the uterus. This leaves several embryos who can either be thrown away, sold, or donated to science. Oh, sure, somebody might buy your embryos and they might get a chance at life-- but why would anyone want somebody else's embryos? This is by far the most productive use of these byproducts. To put a stop to this, one must put a stop to all invitro fertilization.
