This goes beyond, "I think the government is stupid because it isn't in line with my own values, beliefs, etc." This guy is completely unfit for his job. What's worse, other people, perhaps, stupider voting people, will hear him and believe him. I'm pretty sure that a bunch of boarderline stupid Republicans are now thinking that that you can send an internet through a tube.

Actually, most politicians are chosen from a less of two evils, or utiliteritan good perspective. They like to think that they go in as reps of all that, and that's what their ad says, but few are actually like that, and even those, those probably still have their fair share of pragmatic supporters.

As far as expating, I'd love to move to Europe, if nothing else for the promiscious women and transportation system.

Transportation-system??

In Europe busses, on rail and otherwise are kind of popular as public transportation, but surely, the US has a rather nifty way of getting around with the Subways and like in San Francisco with the rail-carts? ( we have those in a few places in sweden too btw)

Its not nearly as wide spread as you would think here. From my home you need to drive 2 hours to get to anywhere with a public transportation system and even then it is only for 2 or three towns that happened to be squished together. I've never even seen a real taxi service outside of New York City or Orlando.
Forgive my possible ignorance, but I see Europe on average as having considerably less sprawl, which makes such a public transportation system more viable. I could be mistaken though.

No, that's totally on the money. But I think it relates to original national sprawl rather than city to suburb sprawl.

I live in Texas. It takes 5 hours just to get to a state border. Honestly, it probably has more to do with our interstate highway system than anything else.

Nothing to do with the fact that your country's just so damn huge that because it is using the equivalent transport infrastructure of any European country, it takes ages to get anywhere, then?

Oh, and remembering that Texas itself is easily a match for almost any European country in terms of size.

Yeah, that's kind of the point I was alluding to in "national sprawl", I just didn't have that kind of clarity of thought right now, considering I'm at work.

well, that and the fact that the car companies bought all teh rail companies and pretty much dismantled them...

Most big cities that don't have public trans around here are "working on" a light rail system like the cablecars in San Fran. That means it will be done in ten or twenty years. Portland managed to get their light rail up and running and it gets swamped. Seattle and L.A. (Chrissy and I's homes) will probably never do it, and people will forever be using cars to get around a large metropolitan area.

When it comes to the rail system, it's like, yeah, it could have been highly feasable to use rails from city to city, but when you got to your next destination, you still would need a car.

Basically, yes, the car lobby doesn't want public transportation, but also, the people don't want it, because they A, love their cars, and B, think that the only people that public transportation would benefit is people who ride the bus and don't have a car right now, and they're just the lower class dredges, so f*** 'em.

And even more gregarious than anything rail related, is the suppression of electric car technology by GM. I mean, it's kind of a daunting prospect for the US economy: no more gas stations, no more mechanics, no more lube shops.....but it's going to be enviromentally necessary.

IMO, it's not that our politicians are idiots, it's just that they don't work for the people, they work for money and preserving their jobs.

It's like if you tried to make a comic book, but instead of caring about good stories or sweet art, you just tried to cram in whatever new toy you had coming out that month, and shape your story around promoting the toy. It would come out crappy, but not because you can't write, but because your impetus for writing is completly off base.

I wonder why they don't just employ trains that can ferry cars around (e.g. like the Eurotunnel trains).

They could travel along extremely straight enclosures (like tunnels, only above ground) at incredible speeds and if they were owned by the car manufacturers, nobody loses out. Right?

Theoretically speaking, yes it's possible that they could set up railroads alongside the highways, although it seems difficult to imagine car companies first making a contract to where they would all build it and all make equal money off it, and second it's too finite.

Once you have a railroad, all you have to sell is tickets. When you have a car, you have stereos, you have optional power windows, you have buying a second car, you have buying a new car in 8 years. You have cars getting repaired with dealer parts. It's a never ending stream of money, much more than a train could compete with.

Plus, I'm telling you, and the other Americans on here could vouch for me, the big car, road trip, visiting small towns, journey is totally ingrained in our culture. They'll take away America's car trip right after we stop being fat and start using the metric system.

Someone should abolish the government, set everything up so that everything is automated, give it a SimCity style interface and let a bunch of grade-schoolers at it.
