i think in terms of the reason route, that's why the aresnal shirt story works, because you essentially train the child in empathy.

by making him feel the impact of having his own stuff burnt he is more likley to consider that that is how others felt having their stuff burnt and hopefully more likly to think more along those lines going forward.

of course - non of this is to say that there won't be some extreme examples where kids require different treatment but given how the question was originally posited i woul dhave thought we were largely talking about the 'average child' and the 'average upbringing' - if such a thing can be calculated.
