Finally caught up on all the DVDs. I'm sad I missed out on it all when it originally happened but then again it did come and go in the blink of an eye.
I just wanna say I thought the film was brilliant. But how did you guys feel about the deaths of the some of the main cast?
Looked for the old 'Serenity' thread to no avail...

It is perfect in every way.
Wash dying is sad, but it gave it the air of drama it needed. Too many films give characters that "untouchable" feel where you know they're all going to be okay. That last stand scene, where one by one they all drop... knowing that Wash and Book have both been killed makes it plausible that they might not get back up again.
One of the things about Serenity is that, to draw a metaphor, it's Return of the Jedi. The series is Eps IV and V, the film is VI*. Because Joss knew he wasn't guaranteed another film afterwards (because he was hella lucky to even get one), he gave it a sense of closure. There's scope for more if needs be, but Serenity tied pretty much everything up and gave some form of response to [most of] the lingering questions from the series.
It's also quality on its own. Hell, even Jonathan Ross loved it. Said it had absolutely everything that was missing from the last three SW movies.
Yay, another convert.
* - And the events of Eps I-III get covered in flashback throughout the series. Everybody knows Mal & Zoe: Teh Early Years would be rubbish. Because we all know how it ends.

I'm with you!
Approaching the film I expected some kind of prelude to a possible new TV series or film franchise...
But the minute I saw Book all bloody on the ground I knew he was gonna die. An impeccably acted scene, you just knew straight away.
Wash's death kinda made me feel numb, but in a good way. You knew no-one was safe, and I was convinced more would die.
So in the end more like a conclusion than a prelude. They could still do another TV series (I take it thats unlikely tho?) but it wrapped up most things nicely.
"Take my love, take my land, Take me where I cannot stand..."
Just wanna add Fillon's a god and Jewel Staite's lush.

yes, and quite relevant to modern times - a man of belief who sees himelf as paving the way to a better world and uses this to justify his actions in this one.
