Not sure why there's a price difference between the two...

It'll do for internetting, the main price difference is due to the processor and memory.spiderfrommars wrote:Need a new computer. Just need it for interneting really, how about this?

the price difference between the two is (as stormwold pointed out) due to the processor and memory... but also faster hard drive and monitor (one has a "flat panel" the other a traditional CRT.
It's quite a good spec in general tho... bit a crap graphics card and a little bit stingy of hard drive space, but if you're not wanting a gaming rig, then yeah, i'd say this was pretty cushdie.

Is a 80GB SATA 7200rpm really faster than a 80GB IDE 7200rpm?Legion wrote:the price difference between the two is (as stormwold pointed out) due to the processor and memory... but also faster hard drive and monitor (one has a "flat panel" the other a traditional CRT.
If so, where's the gain? IF SATA provides higher transfer rates than IDE, but they're the same rate going from physical disk to onboard buffer, then surely this gain is only noticeable when data transfer is of brief duration, as, the rpm would override the cable rate over prolonged transfer and the SATA would have longer periods of inactivity while the mechanical parts 'caught up', versus the IDE's steady flow?
Or does SATA provide something else, beyond simple look-ahead caching?

err.. no, one has what is simply labelled as a "flat panel" (whether this is a true flat screen LCD type or one of those cheaper flat CRT's isn't specified, but i'd guess that it was an LCD) and the other comes with a standard CRT monitor.spiderfrommars wrote:I take it there's no monitor with that?
Not really that much, only a fraction i think. I think it's something to do with the SATA controller being able to send commands to the physical disk in a more efficient manner that therefore allows the data to be read quicker... under certain circumstances. Plus the SATA bandwidth is slightly greater than the IDE's which overcomes the IDE interface's bottlenecks at higher speeds (again i think).Rebis wrote: Is a 80GB SATA 7200rpm really faster than a 80GB IDE 7200rpm?
Basically, on paper yes. In practice, not that it's really noticable. It's more a sign that the MOBO is more modern...

what if I want to burn cds?
Oops. I was at work and scanned your post, missing the word 'monitor'. As punishment I have locked myself in a darkened room and have started whipping myself with bamboo whilst defiling myself with a jumbo cucumber.Legion wrote:

I'm expecting a good turnout this time. Especially for my trick with the banana.Legion wrote:I heard sadie was selling tickets...spiderfrommars wrote: As punishment I have locked myself in a darkened room and have started whipping myself with bamboo whilst defiling myself with a jumbo cucumber.
