{supressed giggling}
this is why a comittee of marketting and advertising professionals should never be allowed to design a product name...
Addy: "Hey, what should we name this product?"
Boss: "We need a name that implies togetherness, family, love, bunny rabbits, Christmas and the laughter of small children to target our key demographic of synergy with added imagineering."
Addy: "You mean we need to try and sound cool and trendy?"
Boss: "...Yes."
Addy: "Hm, how about 'We'?"
Boss: "It's good... but in order to most effecitvely target the modern youthful generation we need a name that differentiates us from the competition but also demonstrates the technological advances and opportunities we represent."
Addy: "You mean we need a tech-geek name like 'iPod'?"
Boss: "...Yes."
Addy: "What about iWe?"
Boss: "Hm not bad..."
Addy: "I've got it! Wii!"
Boss: "Hmm... Wii eh... I like it... I like it alot... it's new, bold and sounds like a premium brand of modern quality."
Addy: "You mean it makes us sound clever?"
Boss: "...Yes."

Yeah, I've been tenative about picking up a 360 myself, but Elder Scrolls IV is putting some serious pressure on me right now.
It's very sad and crappy that the Revolution, a cool name, is now called a Wii. But as long as it plays a crapload of old games, and new games with a revolutionary controller interface, I'm still going to buy it.

I think I might be just at an age now where I don't dismiss something just because of its name, yes wii is very close to wee, but is the PS not very close to pi$$, anyway, if they had just gone, yeah we're gonna call it the revolution how much coverage and news space would it have created? Whereas this, well here we are talking about it.
I would not buy something or not simply because of its name. Its gonna be down to how much i'll get out of it, if I play it and don't like it, I aint gonna buy it. I like the look of the 360 and its games, but everytime i've played on it I don't get the same feeling as I did the first time I played on a PS2 or the first time I played Mario 64.
Give it till launch before people start prenouncing it as the "why"

Playstation or PS requires a jump to create piss - we is just we.
I think the problem is that Ninty isnt in the same postion as say Sonyor MS where they know they will sell lots of consoles, do they really need any more negative marketing before they even start? - Sure i can see hardcore gamers picking the machine up but joe public is just gonna think piss.

That's all well and good, however I think one can't help but agree it's a pretty dumb marketting move however you cut it- certainly for the English speaking nations of the world (which I've no idea how much of the gaming market they account for. 50%+ maybe (just because we tend to horde more of the world's wealth than anything else)).divebomb wrote:I think I might be just at an age now where I don't dismiss something just because of its name, yes wii is very close to wee, but is the PS not very close to pi$$, anyway, if they had just gone, yeah we're gonna call it the revolution how much coverage and news space would it have created? One can't underestimate the power of marketting and advertising.

I reserved some brand new-wee at my local game store. It's the coolest new thing, this wee. With this wee you can do things you've never been able to do before.
Or: Hey, Impy, what did you do today?
Impy: Just played with my wee all day.

If you mean that it sounds like the english slang for urine, then I think you may be a bit off. Seeing as it doesn't appear as if it is so in America or Australia.Karl Lynch wrote:That's all well and good, however I think one can't help but agree it's a pretty dumb marketting move however you cut it- certainly for the English speaking nations of the world.
And in Scotland and Ireland (I just recalled where I had heard wee before this, and it was in a novel from Ireland about two teens on the both sides of the border.) it means small instead.
I guess it's still kind of an odd name in any case.

More that it sounds like a meaningless, short and vaguely silly sounding made-up word which somebody spent a lunch hour trying to give 'meaning' to. As somebody said elsewhere, when you need to start writing mini booklets just devoted to explaining why your product has a surreal name one might want to consider resources being mispent.Predabot wrote:If you mean that it sounds like the english slang for urine, then I think you may be a bit off. While I don't think it was really one, Revolution was a better name imo as it at least had some actual meaning without the need for someone to let you in on what it means and didn't sound quite so much like something named by a small child. Or even NES2 or something might have been better- I guess acronyms are a bit out of fashion right now. Even the dreaded iPod has a name which immediately hints that it is a product by Apple Mac (i-notation) and is a storage device of somesort.
In short for a device which I thought they were targetting at a viable niche of casual gamers who want a cheap(er) system and some more 'fun' titles they've picked a pretty alienating name imo. You might as well have called it the Gbb (prounounced 'gob', and designed to show the beer-bellies yourself and your friends will have from playing videogames all day (bb) and the G stands for 'Great' to tell you what an awesome time you'll have playing it).
