Or better not finding it funny anyway, maybe?Best First wrote:surely, in this case at least, it would be better to be an athiest and see the (darkly) funny side to a tragic event given certain beliefes, than a believer who thinks that bbq'd kiddie is divine plan material? The Last Autobot wrote:Yeah, atheists and there sense of amusement.
May they rest in peace.
anyway, i'm agnostic...
Being a believer doesnt mean the same as being a fanatic, that we would put everything as a labor of God. I, for instance, dont think this is part of a divine plan, just an accident.

MmmmDenyer wrote:Literally, it does -- irrational enthusiasm. You're possibly defining "fanatic" as violent or dangerous. The Last Autobot wrote:Being a believer doesnt mean the same as being a fanatic
according to your dictionary not quite so.
fanatic: A person marked or motivated by an extreme, unreasoning enthusiasm, as for a cause
believe (er): To accept as true or real.To credit with veracity.
To expect or suppose; think.
Different degrees.
And also fanatic doesnt necesarrily mean someone dangerous but exaggerated or extremist (the key word here) in his views

Weird, manglemeelmo from that board brought up exactly the same point as I did. There's only so many archetypes in the world after all, though I do have the better board name.Professor Smooth wrote:...I couldn't resist...

ROLFCOPTERS
This reminds me of a wedding I attended last year - the vicar gave this long speech about how God wasn't responsible for the tsunami, and how you couldn't blame god for such things. Now as far as I can see, whichever way you cut it, if you believe in God, then he was responsible.
"God has a plan for all of us" - which for a lot of people, ended with drowning. Or in this case, being struck by lightning while praying.
"God created the Earth" - yes, and he also created lightning, volcanoes, tornaoes, tsunamis - you know, all those user-friendly features of planet Earth.
"God is omnipotent" - rather speaks for itself.
"God notes the fall of sparrows" - and preumably drowning tourists and char-grilled children.
Of course it all depends on whether you believe in a theist God or a deist God, or some sort of self-limiting "I could intervene but I'm not going to" theist God. Whichever way, either God is all-powerful (and therefore has to accept some sort of responsibility for the world) or he's not and he's not worth bothering with. The sort of God who has accidents is not the sort of God I'd want in charge of the universe anyway.

I told my friend about this. He laughed. I laughed. We both laughed. Struck by lightning while praying...
I think its ridiculous that one would find this funny. Particularly when children are involved.
People who have premartial sex and die of AIDS, you don't see believers in God laughing at their expense even though they believe it is wrong, do you?
By the logic shown by some here, as a believer in God, I should laugh every time somebody dies of AIDS because of this. I mean, hey, let's just take that advice and put a pleasant spin on things, shall we?
Those who believe in God should give up this trying to be politically correct ********, because they ain't gonna get it in return.
Is it over for those children's parents? Would you make light of it in front of them? I mean, yeah, you can laugh behind their backs, that takes cajones. It's tragic. It's ironic. It's happened. It's over.
"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.
