Who's the greatest athlete of all time?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

On that list.

Id say Ali and Pele are in a different class of thier own - as each sport is hard to judge against the other I would think its acomplishment outside of the sport that might make a difference.

Redgraves inteesting, 5 golds in 5 seperate olympics is pretty nutty.

I'd say Redgrave - the Olympic standard is the one by which sport should be judged and he has shown that he's the best over and over again.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

I remember when he got the 5th, the commentators were on about two others who've achieved '5 in 5', can't remember their names, but one of them had an olympic medal for a different event in each.

Michael Johnson pretty much shat on all comers in a variety of track events for a number of years.

I think he may even be the fastest runner of all time in that his 200M World Record when halved beats the world record for 100.

the 2nd half of a decent 200M will be faster as your already running at full speed.

I used to tell MJ this all the time, start 250M back and beat him.

True. Although the head of steam takes longer to build.

Wouldn't work. At 350m, your stamina will have already begun to wane, hence why a 400m world record doesn't beat two 200m nor four 100m.

True, you have can build up a head of steam, but you then have to maintain it.

On Meters per second basis, he is the fastest sprinter in history.

Gretsky:
The number 99 is retired throughout the whole NHL.
He has a total of 60 official records.
He also has around 28 "unofficial" records.

He made 2857 points during his career (the guy in second place, Mark Messier, made 1887 points. The guy in third place, Gordie Howe, as 1850 points).

He won nine Hart Trophies, the NHL's most valuable player award.
Five Lady Byng Memorial Trophy (most gentlemanly player).

And the list just goes on and on.

He may have ****** up somewhat though: there was a gambling scandal where his ass manager in Phoenix (and Gretskys wife) was involved. Bla bla. I don't know how the whole thing ended though?

Gretsky is, to me, the greatest athlete in this poll.
He has done it all.
Can't believe I'm still here.

I went with Ali.

Mainly because he was one kind of fighter before they stripped his title for three years(a dancer), then became another kind of fighter after that (remember the Rope a Dope?).

And he won the title both ways.

The thing that cinches it for me though is when he beat George Foreman n Zaire. Everyone thought Ali was a dead man, especially after Frazier was knocked out by George in two rounds.

No, but he grilled the guy who patented the meat grill.

It's true- George Foreman, the Monster of the Ring, taken out by Ali :) Right at the start of the match, when they shook hands, Ali said to him: "You heard about me when you were a little boy- now you are going to meet your master!" Then stormed off back to his corner :D He then proceeded to tease him for three or four rounds before suddenly landing about 6 blows on him in the space of 5 seconds... Foreman looked rather confused

Not forgetting Ali was an Olympic athlete before, then he went into professional boxing, was banned for not wanting to go fight in Vietnam (and due to racism) only to make a come-back by defeating Foreman whom most people thought was invincible. All after being at least 5 years over the hill! o.O

Shame he got wrapped up in extreme islam... he paid for that though, they took him for every penny he had. He's quite a way from being rich, these days.
