English odds?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

English odds?

Post by Obfleur » Thu Mar 30, 2006 4:32 pm

I'm playing Football Manager 2006 and I don't ******* understand the odds.

My Team wins: 4 - 5. Draw: 2 - 1. Southampton wins: 3 - 1.

Explain please :(
Can't believe I'm still here.

IIRC the figure on the right is your stake and the figure on the left is the return:

i.e. 4-1 means for £1 bet you would get a winning of £4 (plus your £1 as well).

Yeah I think that's right - so a £1 bet on your team to win (if they win) would return £1.80 with your stake back, while a bet on Southampton would yield £4.

Basically I think Southampton are going down.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

You've basically got three different types of odds:

- Odds on = something is likely to happen. 4-5 is odds on.
- Evens = there's an equal chance either way.
- Odds against = it's not really expected. 3-1 is odds against.

The numbers reflect how much the bookies are willing to bet you on something happening. If they offer odds of 40-1 for something, it means that they're willing to give you back 40 times what you bet, should you win; because they reckon it won't happen.

3-1 means they don't think it's gonna happen, but they're not prepared to fork out a huge amount. Low odds is basically inviting lots of losing bets, to cover their expenses when they pay out.

4-5 means for every £5 you bet, they'd give you £4 if you win (plus you keep your stake, obviously). Means they reckon it'll happen.

Thanks for the explanation guys :)

In Sweden we bet like this:
Team A wins: the odds is 1.01
Draw: the odds is 1.9
Team B wins: the odds is 5.1

This means that you multiply the money you bet, with the odds.
Bet £10 that Team B wins - and if they win, you get £51.
