Good lesser-known bands...?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Good lesser-known bands...?

Post by saysadie » Tue Mar 28, 2006 8:17 pm

I just started a trial account with emusic. While this is all well and good, they don't have many of the artists I'm looking for at the moment and I'm having a difficult time trying to sort out what to download since my computer's being a **** and won't let me hear any music samples.

Anyone else use the service before? Know of any good bands? So far all I've got ready to DL is Bloc Party's "Silent Alarm" and I've alreadt DLed Black Label Society's cover of Neil Young's "Heart of Gold [which is an unintentionally funny cover, btw]. What's worth searching for/checking out?

Melt Banana are worth a look.

Not sure if Distiller are well known your way, but they have some good stuff.

Never used the service myself so can't be of any help in that area.

What do you like, Sadie?

I recommend Broke, 3-Mile Pilot, Black Heart Procession and Team Sleep. Broke is the only band I could describe as "punk with soul." Sounds like Muse, Prince and Thrice all fell into the cooking pot. 3MP and BHP are slower indie piano rock. Kind of a Pink Floyd feel at times. Team Sleep is Chino from Deftones' side project, with a lot more electronic and hip-hop and a lot less distortion.

I like Undeclinable Amubuscade. It's a dutch band, so maybe they're not on that site of yours. And maybe they're called Undeclinable now. :???:

I have no idea what you like, but anything from Sigur Rós is amazing (especially the album Takk and ( ) (it's untitled).
It's "post rock" and it's just truly amazing and atmospheric.
You can also listen to the songs (/watch the videos) here.
I recommend Untitled #1, Hoppípolla and Glósóli.
The videos are really beautiful.

If you would like som kick ass rock 'n' roll I suggest The Hellacopters.
Before the fall and I'm in the band (from the album Rock and roll is dead) are übercool.
By the grace of god (from the album with the same name) is also awesome.
You can find music and videos here.
Just go to "The Music" and click the Rock & Roll is dead album at the bottom of the page.

Múm is another awesome band. I usually describe their music as "blip blop music".
On the old mountain radio is a nice song from their EP/Single/Don't know what it is, called Please smile my noise bleed.
Green grass of tunnel is also a really sweet song. It's from their album called Finally we are no one.

If you prefer "skate punk" I suggest Millencolin.
Shut you out, Birdie and Stalemate are three really cool songs from their latest album Kingwood.
You can see the video for Shut you out here.
Just go to "Media -> Video".

Do you like weird music? Then go check out The Knife.
Their song Heartbeats is a nice tune. It's on their album called Deep Cuts.
Can't believe I'm still here.

Little bit of everything, Sprunkner. Though they only have The Black Heart Procession from the list you gave... Thanks for that, I'll have a look-see. Any standout songs?

[edit] :joy: Ob, you so rock! Millencolin is a band I haven't heard from in at least four years, I've definitely got to look for 'em. And thanks muchly for the rest, I'm going to have a lot of fun with this thing now.

[edit2] No Sigur Rós, Múm, or The Knife, though I am absolutely thrilled to find some Millencolin...

It could well be that that's all you need.

But, on following that album's theme (the theme being superb British indie albums released last year)... try Editors, Maximo Park and Hard-Fi.
Grrr. Argh.

Other than the obvious, lately I've been enjoying The Fallout Trust, Calla, Secret Machines, Infadels and Graham Coxon.

The Mob, Neal Morse, Phantom Blue, Temple of the Dog, Lee Aaron, U.D.O.

Boston, Camel, maybe?

Do The Killers classify as lesser-known over there?

And if you liked Black Label Society, there's some stuff Zakk did before forming that band. Look under Pride & Glory or Zakk Wylde.

Seven years
Is she really going out with him

Other names I can't remember. I liked the 'one for the money' album. This was some five-ish years ago when I went to two of their concerts.

Boo!

Maximo Park? "Going Missing", "Grafitti", "Apply Some Pressure", "Postcard of a Painting", "Once, a Glimpse"... pretty much anything. It's all of the highly recommended.

Oh, and these bands:

- Apocalyptica (which is metal, but on four cellos)
- Eden (a Belgian band with two female singers), listen to Seafood, Dinosaur, and a bunch of others
- Krezip (Dutch)
- Kings of Convenience (quite relaxed music, I think it's Norwegian)
- Sertab Erener (or just Sertab, she's Turkish)
- Within Temptation (a bit gothic, but the singer has a very good classical music voice)

Taproot :Poem
ANYTHING by Machines of Loving Grace
PWEI is still considered underground for the most part around here

Oh yeah.. Puya.. the self titled album is AMAZING. the second one is total crap. Its produced by Fred "I am a golden god" Durst and sounds every bit like it.

But the first one is amazing. Alot like Incubus's S.C.I.E.N.C.E. album.. you know, when they still had thier balls and made MUSIC not something to make 14 year old girls panties melt (aka Sugar Ray Syndrome)

Speaking of Sugar Ray.. Check out thier pre penile removal music. Mean Machine and Ten Seconds Down actually kick much ass.

Sadie m'dear,

I'm having trouble remembering the good Black Heart Songs. They number their albums and 3 & 4 are pretty much all good.

Do you have an AIM name? I can send you some mp3s through my wife's... or I can have her put some stuff up on our site.

Join a library! You can borrow all the CDs you might ever want for 30p a time. You can listen to them on your computer, rip them to the hard drive and return them to the library the next day. It also works for DVD box sets as well.

These days I'll only splash out if I know I'm getting something of value for my money. Like last week I spent £112 on the David Attenborough Life box set, which has 24 discs and is complete from On Earth to In The Undergrowth, consequently I now have disrupted sleep patterns and odd dreams about frogs and ants. And Battlestar Galactica, Series 2. Brrr. Cylons.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Y'know what, this is something I keep telling myself I'll do but never get around to doing it. You're right though, easy access to CDs [and books! boooooooooks!]... nearest one is a good hour away though... still. I really should, eh?

Gonna give DLing a go in a bit here, will have a look to see what's available out of what you guys have suggested. If there's any single tracks off of those albums that you think might be good standouts, lemme know! And thanks so veddy muchly to the lot of you.

Well that's annoying. After downloading about three songs fom Bloc Party's CD, I played 'em to check them out.

While I thought they're pretty damn good [They had me about halfway through "Like Eating Glass"], I found out that the downloads were missing the end part of the song. All three of them.

I don't know if it's the files themselves [free trial account, after all... for all I know it was done on purpose, which is a bit ****** but hey] or the site, but it's annoying.
