I've a lot of time for Williams (I'll be collecting my degree from him this September! o.o) but I don't like the way particularly he chooses his words... alright, he doesn't think Creationism should be taught in schools but he won't come out with a particularly sensible defence.
Rather than saying "Because I believe it patently is not true in any literal sense whatsoever", which (along with believing homosexuals do have equal rights) I think are his actual views, he comes out with some fudged marshmallowyness about how it would 'lessen Creationism to teach it as just a theory'.
I appreciate the guy's in a difficult situation, with Anglicanism very heavily divided, but I wonder how much he really thinks papering over problems, mincing words and generally ignoring the vast, 400 ton luminescent yellow elephant in the corner of the room will actually help.

Yeah Rowan's in an unenviable position - on the one hand trying to advocate what he knows to be the sensible policy and on the other having to appease those who it seems will settle for nothing but the exact opposite. It's a bit like Catholicism in reverse. I'd much rather be an infallible pope than a flawed AB of C.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

But it IS a big unpoliced conversation. I'm living proof, for better or worse.Karl Lynch wrote:"It's like a huge, unpoliced conversation". That sounds like people have been allowed freedom of speech! Set up the gallows...
I really oughta join up for bash.org and Newsarama, and get into the thick of it.

Yeah.. that was the point? It is (imo) the ultimate tool for freedom of speech, and the Archbishop doesn't like this.Predabot wrote:But it IS a big unpoliced conversation. What he actually said that it would lessen "the doctrine of creation". Which means the belief that God created the universe (and also includes that He keeps it going). The doctrine of creation doesn't necessarily mean creationism.Karl Lynch wrote:Rather than saying "Because I believe it patently is not true in any literal sense whatsoever", which (along with believing homosexuals do have equal rights) I think are his actual views, he comes out with some fudged marshmallowyness about how it would 'lessen Creationism to teach it as just a theory'.

However, as he actually said "My worry is creationism can end up reducing the doctrine of creation rather than enhancing it," it's unlikely that creationism was external to the scope of his point.Bouncelot wrote:What he actually said that it would lessen "the doctrine of creation". Potatoe-potato. They both involve a mythical godlike being creating the universe, one just takes it a bit further and adds some dates/timesBouncelot wrote:What he actually said that it would lessen "the doctrine of creation". The world was created on a Tuesday... not many people know that...

God called for planets, and saw that the planets were good. Then was hungry and wanted some toast.
"Aw, son of a bitch!" He was heard to exclaim, realising the long, drawnout process he had to go through in order to create bread, let alone toasters.
A few million years, and a couple of billion humans later, God saw the human race. Which was not quite so good. But he had toast. Booya!
Jesus was heard to mumble something about God not using his omnipotency properly, but was promptly packed off to boarding school... he got his own back by converting to Christianity, though. And consuming large amounts of Easter Eggs.

My favourite (un)creation myth:
In the beginning was the word,
Man said: Let there be more light
Electric scenes and laser beams,
Neon brights the light abhorring nights
On the second day he said: Let's have a gas
Hydrogen and cholera and pest
Let's make some germs, we'll poison the worms
Man will never be suppressed
And he said: Behold what I have done
I've made a better world for everyone
Nobody laugh, nobody cry
World without end, forever and ever
Amen, amen, amen
On the third we get green and blue for pie
On the fourth we send rockets to the sky
On the fifth make the beasts and submarines
On the sixth man prepares his final dream:
In our image, let's make robots for our slaves
Imagine all the time that we can save
Computers, machines, the silicon dream
Seventh he retired from the scene
And he said: Behold what I have done
I've made a better world for everyone
Nobody laugh, nobody cry
World without end, forever and ever
On the eighth day machine just got upset
A problem man had never seen as yet
No time for flight, a blinding light
And nothing but a void, forever night
He said: Behold what man has done
There's not a world for anyone
Nobody laughed, nobody cried
World's at an end, everyone has died
