Quit smoking again... it's odd, though.

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

I don't recall anyone saying that...

I caved yesterday, anyway. And I was so ******* pissed off at myself. :p But I'm going to try agaaaain... try, try again, all that.

I've gone cold turkey every time I quit [har-took a vacation from, more like I guess], actually. I just don't remember it ever being this difficult. :uhh:

And Preds, I really don't need a story on how you're a shining bastion of morality.

Considering that this is the guy who recently admitted he hadn't showered in 3 weeks, I very much doubt there's anything shiny about him. Well, his hair may have that lovely oily sheen to it, but that's pushing it a bit.

And speaking of your problem, usually these kind of addictions are linked to certain behaviour patterns o can be increased by them. So as stated before try other places and if you cant -or is not the case- tell the people you hang on with what you are experiencing so there wont be cigarette temptation, so to speak. The rest is mainly how strong willed you are.

Mmm. I wonder if that was necessary?

:joy: Haaa ha ha ha ha.

I've already told the apartment [my "roomies"] I was thinking about quitting, and their reaction was like "Riiiiight. Sure."

Yesterday my brother offered me a cigarette as a joke. He'd just laugh if he knew I caved unless I bit his head off for it... not that I think it's overly horrible or anything, I just happen to know a lot of assholes.

As a general statement applying to the world in general? Haven't a clue. It's rather hard to get to know that many billions of people on a close personal level.

On a side note I'd just like to thank you guys for being supportive, giving advice and whatnot. It's what I was hoping for as, well... I think I've mentioned my lack of any real supportage 'round here. [Which isn't a whinge as I don't see it as a bad thing... it's just the way things are, we're more comfortable with sarcasm.] :)

Haven't caved again, don't really feel the urge to. All's well and good, here's hoping I can make it through tomorrow evening.

Yeah, I heard that there is a legislation-proposal to ban all smoking in most clubs, bars and various enclosed public areas. :)

And if I'm not entirely crazy, according to this there's not going to be any private clubs exempted anymore even.

which, in my opinion, is something of an infringement of my rights. it's not like cigarettes are illegal... i reckon they should also ban people using mobile phones when sitting next to someone else, because of the microwave radiation danger...

In a situation where pub owners are the only ones tending bars, that's fair enough -- but employers can't require staff to work in an environment hazardous to their health simply by presence, without recognised protection. Whilst it would be fun to see bar staff in gas masks, I doubt many pubs would go for it.

heheh... true!
however some of the bar staff out my way have to wear far more than just gas masks for protection! :o

I think it should be illegal - its a highly adictive substance, more addictive then Heroin and it kills you or ruins your quality of life.

You only argue about your human rights because your an addict.

If say Heroin were Legal, and you were an addict im sure you would argue a similar case. really it shouldnt have been made available to you in the first place.

"please pay me £5 a week for cance, lower quality of life smelly clothes, bad breath, yellow skin" - ? **** deal.

Are you for making alcohol illegal as well, then? Just curious. :)

There's a slight difference between a chemical that may cause physiological damge if ever ingested, and a chemical that will cause physiological damage if ingested in extreme amounts.

Sorry mate-you've lost me (come on-we've had enough conversations for you to know that I basically need to be sat down and talked. to. slowly. :) )

Are you saying that one could potentially hurt you, and the other will if you take loads of it?

Yes.

Nicotine lines the lungs and that interferes with their effectiveness at processing air, causing such problems as shortness of breath, and the presenece can also cause cancerous activity within the lung's cells with the option of spreading.

Alcohol is a natural chemical produced within the body, and processed by the body. Ingesting alcohol causes the body's natural processing to increase, but there is a limit to that increase, so ingesting excessive amounts can cause a build up of alcohol within the body, where it can interfere with other bodily processes that it would otherwise not reach, and can cause unnatural chemical reactions resulting in cellular damage.

In brief, inhaling nicotine has the potential to cause harm, while drinking excessive amounts of alcohol will damage organs and even cause them to fail.

Hence why terms such as "in moderation" and "abuse" are linked to drinking, while "can kill" is linked to smoking.

Theres no comparison to be honest.

if I give u a pack of a beer are you addicted to the point where not drinking would be a nightmare?

Also, drinking in soicable ammounts will probably never harm you, where as smoking will.

They really bare no comparison.

I wasn't trying to suggest that alcohol is more addictive than tobacco-more that both are addictive, and both ruin health and take lives-just because the numbers for alcohol are less than for those for tobacco doesn't mean they aren't significant, just as that just because alcohol addiction may be a slower process doesn't make it any less of a problem.

Just my opinion-as always, I'm open to correction/education/torture via electrodes. :)

EDIT: Thanks for clarifying, Rebis. :)

You could do the same with a case of cigarettes -- except two years later I'd still be on the first packet...

Mind you, if it were a pack of Boddingtons, Carling or most other lagers there'd be a hundred percent of it left.

There are three cases being brought against the smoking ban being brought up here - where the full ban kicks in in 2 weeks - a hotel chain, a pub chain and an individual. They're all claiming breach of human rights.

I don't have a problem with the ban, personally. Some of the advertising and almost hysterical behaviour from pro-ban campaigners kinda got on my goat a little, but I'm actually looking forward to it.

Saying that about the over-the-top pro-banners, there are all sorts of dire and 'oh noes' predictions for pubs etc....anyone here who smokes not going to be heading to the pub as much now?

I can't possibly speak for what will happen in Britain in two weeks, but we never had any problems, any significant loss of sales in the clubs and pubs here in sweden when our bann went into effect. :|

I don't think Ireland had hailstorms and hurricanoes of pubs going out of business either. It seems to be a bit of an exagerated claim.
