I just got the first TPB of the Mark Millar/Terry Dodson run on Spider-Man. This is ******* fabulous. Amazing. Why didn't I get these before? Where can I get the next one? Borders and my comic store are out. Curses!

Luckily, my LCS is one of the best in the country, and has a backstock that probably would make the rest of you drool, so I had no problem going in and picking up the other two Millar MK Spiderman TPBs, which are pretty good, I suppose.

From what I've heard, don't buy anything after #12, when Millar left.

No eBay or Amazon luck?

I also grabbed the first 4 issues of ltimate extinction - bit sparesly paced but its probably the best art i've ever seen from Peterson and i like the reinvention of the surfer. Reed standing up to Futy was smashing. I missed ultimate sectre though and i'm not entirelu syire if i missed anything other than, oh, here's Captain Marvel'.

Ulitmate deadpool is not as good as real Deadpool by a significant stride but the story in U Spidey is pretty fun as well atthe moment. I love the Spidey Kitty stuff.

Anyway, that's my comic witterings.

EDIT - oh, is there any X-stuff that is actually worth bothering with at the moment? Apart from Whedon's obviously...

I've been enjoying Deadly Genesis, but that's the only X-Title I've been reading. Brubaker's moving over to Uncanny in a month or so; that could be interesting. He'd done no wrong thus far, imooc.

Deadly genesis is good, and the new XFactor is fantastic.

Excalibur is poor. I only buy it because I love Dazzler. Uncanny and normal Xmen are pretty average. It scares me how much I enjoy the likes of DeadGirl, which is by Milligan, and then compare it to his Xmen run which lacks any character whatsoever.

I agree with Hound on almost all acounts. I didn't find Uncanny bad since Decimation, but can't say it's great either. Brubaker is taking over in July, so it might be a good jumping point, and you can have Deadly Genesis as a taster. Same with X-Men: new writer (Mike Carey) in July, currently Milligan has nice ideas but seems a bit lost while executing them, which is shame because I loved his first two arcs.

New Excalibur's latest issue was the best one so far, so there's hope for that yet, especially as Claremont has some heart problems and he'll take a break for a while, which will result in Frank Tieri writing that book (and Uncanny is already co-written by Tony Bedard). Tieri's bringing Chamber into the mix, but I don't know if he becomes a regular.

Because of the same reason, Claremont won't be taking Exiles for a while (if ever), and Bedard will stay on the book longer than he was supposed to. Current World Tour extravanganza I find m'eh, though.

Not really an X-book, but Nicieza's Cable/Deadpool was really fun so far. And I'm still loving X-Factor.

Another agreement here: X-Factor is the only decent main X-book at the moment. Dead Girl and Son of M have both been good minis...liked Deadly Genesis too, but it's not really as OMG WOW as the hype makes it, IMHO.

On the subject of Brubaker...anyone else getting his Daredevil? That book is kicking my ass. It's turning into one of those made-up 'hey how about if...' comics you and a mate brainstorm when you're trying to be as deliberately outrageous and bad-ass as possible; and yet it's totally not crap at all. Loving it.

Finally got my Alias Omnibus the other day. It is my new favourite possession. Luke Cage and Jessica Jones' wedding is this week, if I read the listings correctly...New Avengers Annual #1.

cheers dudes. i may pick up the first x-factor tpb then, and deadly genesis when it gets collected.

i actualy quite enjoyed the last 2 issues of exiles, but JESUS CHRIST are they going to vists every single sodding second rate alternate universe? Come on! Plus despite the rotating cast there was always a good focus on character in thsi book, Bedard has lost that totally, i don't feel i know the new members at all. I wish Sabretooth had bought it instead of you kno who.

It's probably the best X-Men related thing currently going on, so it might be elevated to a classic just because.

On the other hand, I started reading Invincible which is very cool, even if I had to adjust myself to the art. I like it that there's so many things going on there simultaneously (ha! spelled it correctly without looking it up first).

Incidentally, there's going to be a mini later this year concerning that reality, but I looked at its creative team (Loeb/Liefeld) and any interest I might have had in it went away.

Okay, a bit off topic but probably not worth its own thread.

I picked up Sandman: The Wake from the library 'cause I was looking for something new and flicking through I saw that it had Batman in it, so would probably be fairly accessible. Turns out Batman is only in it for one panel (and two words!) before disappearing and the whole thing is so confusing and weird I'm having trouble getting through it, as it all seems to refer to characters and situations set up in previous books.

Any Sandman fans out there? Can anyone tell me a good place to start so that I might stand a chance of understanding any of this?

I haven't read any Sandman yet, so don't know how essential it is, but the first book is called Preludes & Nocturnes. The one you bought is the last one, methinks, which would explain the confusion.

Kirkman wrote on letter pages that the adventure with Spider-Man is tied with next story arc. Will find it sooner or later.

I think Sandman the regular series is where it begins...

It's confusing, yes. For about 2 issues, you just wonder what the heck this is all about... But it's a great series. There are no other comics like this... Really original.

And you better have a good memory 'cause many threads are left hanging and picked up much later... I really liked Sandman. Too bad it's over now... of course it was finished in a way there's really nothing else to say now.

I started reading Lucifer afterwards, but it's not as good.... Gets to complicated and too many important characters are killed off often just to add to the feeling. PLus I don't really like the main character... obviously...

Anybody reading Annihilation? All of the minis have started now, including Ronan, by Mr. F.
Thoughts?

Liked it more than I was kinda expecting, so far. Guess I would rate them in this order:
Nova - feel a bit guily putting this at #1 as no real character development happened and OMG he got a new costume1!! but the interaction between Nova and the Worldmind was fun, and I really liked the art. Good story well told.
Super-Skrull - totally surprised but how much I liked this. Loved stuff like Reed's exclamation of Super-Skrull's name being in the char's typeface, and the busy art-style, cheesy but fun. And I wonder if he'll be going up against Blastarr...
Ronan - enjoyed the 'frontier Dredd' style of this, but I got a bit lost by the characters showing up at the end - I only knew 1 of them and he was the incidental one, so what was presumably intended to be a strong finish to the book fell flat for me. I think if you know the chars it'd be pretty cool.
and then a BIG drop to
Silver Surfer - boring. Nice to see Gabriel Air-Walker again for 5 minutes, but damn that was dull. No more Surfer for me, I'm afraid.

Been a Marvel fan for years, and somewhat I feel that the Xbooks have lost their "soul" for a long time now. Anyone here read the first volume of Excalibur? Xman? Cable? Any thoughts of them?

I finally got the last two bits of Millar and Dodson's as an anniversary present. ****in' amazing. Loved every minute of it. I also realized why Jonah was so convinced that his son was Spidey.

Love it. Definitely my favourite X-book of all times and one of my favourites comic series. Even though Raab's stuff wasn't good, and the transition issues between Davis and Ellis were sometimes really bad, three main runs are superb.

I'm really happy that Marvel is releasing the thing in TPBs. Hopefully they will release it all, even if it takes them 15 years at this rate. Same with New Mutants, and I hope they will start reprinting Generation X, too.

Excalibur: Here and there. The only 'run' I read the whole lot of were the Ellis issues and then about 4 issues after he left, long enough for the drop in writing quality to stench the book up so badly that the period post-Ellis on that book is now called 'the stinky mouldy old wet ****-stained sock' period.

X-Man I stuck with for a long time, too long probably. It was fairly entertaining for a while, if by dint of managing to do somewhat fresh things in the X-verse rather than anything else. Jumped before the Ellis issues on that, and didn't go back for them either.

Cable: crossover issues only, apart from another 6 issues I must have picked up when temporarily insane.

I think a lot of people go through a period when they wake up and realise that the X-books, with exceptions of course, generally kinda suck. It seems a pretty common thing, like the thing where X-fans all apparently seem to the think the best time in the X-books was around the time they started reading them...it's a very stratified readership.

Got into most of teh x-books around the tuime of the Phalanx covenent, so more or less as Ellis run was starting, the few issues with Pacheco were largely outstanding. Once Ellis left it was astoundingly bad, but at least it had some kind of identity, unlike X-Factor which, post the original 5 x-men didn't seem to know what it was. Strong Guy is cool tho...

X-man was great fun to start with, lost its way in the middle and then was utterly mind blowing at the end. It was totally reinvented and i was sorry to se it go but in fairness it was wrapped up well.

Cable, i pretty much enjoyed, with the odd damp patch here and there, but once they pulled Robert whats his name off the book (the horror writer), whoi thought was doing a bang up job, and turned it into soldier x i lost interest.

Gen X went from my fave book to burning in teh bin the moment Hama took over.

X-Force i have enjoyed in all its incarnations, its a bit of an idulgence some times, but that's not an issue if you even it out with 'deeper' books.

I think the main problem with the x-books has been that as some of teh big story lines have got wraped up or abandoned(Gambit as the traitor, Gambit's secret, The Twelve, third summers bro) they were never really replaced with anything particularly interesting and characters that were quite key to one stage of the x-mythos drifted away from the centre, again not really being replaced in a meaningful way. As it is now the best x-men stories of recent years have sat pretty much outside the wider x-continuity - Morrison's work, Whedon's and the fisrt 30 issues or so of ultimate x-men. Plus i think some charachters have been handled so inconsistantly that you loe affinity for them. IMO anyway.

i was especially fond of the way he flagged his lack of imagination by just porting a load of dull bit parters over from Wolverine. Nice touch that.

Cival war i am def getting the main mini, might get the x-men one as well.

balked at the fact you would have to buy 74 comics in all to get everything, but pleased that some of the key arcs are in titles i buy anyway.

Who's gonna buy civil war?

Xman: I really liked the potential Nate had but I think it was somewhat misused. I didnt want him to fade away as it was hinted since day one, but his ending was a heroic/meaninful one after all.

Cable: Robert Weinberg IIRC. “Im the Fifth Power!!!!” I love many of Cables stories especially the Dark Sisterhood arc and some of his adventures with Racher and some X force ers. Cable is definitely one of mu fave characters and many of the things he accomplished and passed through the series made me care more for him. And also there was an arc where he visited Peru, my country!!! And was delightet of some of the details (a few were wrong but many were accurate).

Ive followed Uncanny Xmen since issue 300 (yil now), and what bothers me more is the inconsistency of many characters, but nonetheless I continue buying it (its like being sick). Nightcrawler remains as my fave Xmen.

Ive read all Excalibur and Xforce first volumes. In case of Excalibur I remember fondly the cross caper stories and all the alt future stories. I quite liked X force and their learning and subsequently solo adventures. And even the Statix team (but it definitely deserved other title cause it was waaay other thing)

Mmmm civil war? Quite possibly Ill do. But it looks to me like a been there/done that story but this time with heroes instead of mutants.
