I like comics, How 'bout you?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

I have just finally sat down and read the first six issues of X-Men Legacy.

I take back everything bad I said about it. It's good.

Legacy is really enjoyable. I hope Chamber gets a bit more screen time.

So the Orson Scott Card Superman story has been put on hold.

And it got me thinking about Freedom of Speech...and about how people who would rather die than give up that right...don't care enough to learn what it means.

I made the mistake of checking out the comments on the story on Bleeding Cool. And I remembered, VERY quickly, why I don't venture into the comments sections of comic book websites. The bile could strip the paint from your kitchen wall.

Anyway. Boycotting the book, complaining to the publisher, and trying to get the guy taken off the book is not "violating freedom of speech" it's the very definition of "practicing freedom of speech." The point has been missed entirely.

Freedom of Speech, as spelled out in the US Constitution and upheld by the US Supreme Court says that the government can not stop/punish you from expressing yourself (with certain admitted limitations).

That's it. That's all it does. You have the right to say pretty much whatever you want. And everybody else in the world has the right to tell you that you're talking ****.

The droves of people who called up, wrote letters, and emailed their displeasure at DC Comics paying a guy who has been known to use his own money in the interests of groups trying to uphold discrimination against millions of people are expressing their beliefs in a fully legal way.

But then again, let's be honest, the people who bitch the most about their "freedoms being violated" are usually the ones who are trying to use those freedoms to take away those of others. "I have the right to free speech and you have the right to shut the **** up if you disagree!"

Amiright?

Great last-page crossover boom.

And with the last page of Cable/X-Force #6, we have a theme for the week.

Also Tabby. Yay for Tabby. Though boo for a Tabby who isn't written by Warren Ellis. There should be laws passed about that sort of thing, post-Nextwave.

Also: Saga. Just yes.

Yes we d indeed have a theme for the week - though first couple of issues of Cable and... were a bit poop but the last few have rapidly improved bar Poitr's ridiculous excue for not telling Wolverine what is going on.

Totes agree on Boom Boom.

Much behind everybody else, I have just finally negotiated the Black Dossier.

What a gloriously batshit ridiculously difficult piece of genius.

The first TPB of Bedlam is out now. You should buy it, because it's probably quite cheap. (£7.50 in Forbidden Planet).

Time to argue.

Do we all have collective amnesia as to how wretched Maximum Carnage was? I keep seeing it on 'best-of' lists.

So just finished 20th Century Boys, as it comes to it's end. Brilliant. Hands down the best comic/manga work I have ever read.

Ever.
"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

Just ploughed through DC's tasty hardcover of Ellis/Hitch's Authority run. Any excuse eh.

It's aged a tiny bit, but is still fab. Also nice to have the Elllis stuff in a distinct set to Millar's run, rather than the half/half TPB versions. Underlines the change in era nicely.

20th Century Boys is definitely an amazing manga. It was largely responsible for getting me interested in psychological thriller mangas rather than action/adventure Shonen ones I was initially enamored with. Monster from the same writer is awesome too.

X-Men Legacy #11.

BOOF. Now that's a reveal.

Also, I've been holding off on reading Journey into Mystery but think I may have just royally spoilered myself with Young Avengers #5. But YA is SO awesome that I don't even mind.

It's pretty average. It's a shame as visually I love it. The costumes are fantastic.

The censored swear words drive me nuts. X-Men books have had far darker and grittier story lines without needing that ****.

X-Men #1 was the nuts though.

I just completely gave up on it this month. A waste of a few quid, as most of my friends were smart enough to ditch it last month.
