Copying CDs to comp

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Copying CDs to comp

Post by saysadie » Tue Feb 21, 2006 6:22 am

Ooh, I'm copying CDs to my computer. I feel like such a rebel.

Not. But I was wondering if there was any way to get around the copy protection on some CDs... I managed on one [fluke], but I can't do my Placebo singles CD, and I want to listen to my Placebo singles CD on my tiny little music-file player doohickey thingamajig whatsit. And place a few songs on my playlist.

Haaalp?

Are you still on one of Apple's pretend computers, or are you using a real one yet?

On most Windows PCs, I understand that the Copy Protection software doesn't load if you hold down shift whilst the disc loads.

Dunno how true that is though. My new computer seems to be missing something in the settings... whenever I play a copy controlled disc, it prompts me to say "this CD is trying to install some software, would you like it to?" The answer is always blatantly "no" and I can rip as per normal. Maybe it's an XP thingm though.

I'm really helpful, ain't I?

Though my copy of Placebo's singles collection isn't even copy protected anyway so, uhm... pass!
Grrr. Argh.

AFAIK the copy-protection thingy only works if your computer is set up to auto-play CDs. I have quite a few copy-protected CDs I've acquired in my time (Hail To The Thief, or the Ultraviolence Greatest Hits promo which actually had printed on the disc "This will not play in a PC or Mac") and they all copied after about three tries. If nothing else I suggest perseverance.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Whoa, whoa, whoa. I have an Imac at home and I use a top spec G5 at work, and have never had a problem copying any CDs to Itunes. In fact most of my mates have downloaded Itunes for their PC's. I even have put all the chilli pepper's stuff on their, which has the protection on.

I am propah blingin', baby. Though I must protest... I quite liked my Apple while I could still use it. It was a friendly little thing. :(

Yeah, tried the shift thing-didn't work, disc doesn't load at all. And I'm getting the same message but nothing loads for me at all with this disc, it worked-like for the last but this one's being stubborn.

Is there a way to disable this? Apologies, my brain apparently refuses to work properly at 4 AM.

explore your way to the CD, drag and drop?

If you've had autoplay turned on, the computer may be ****ed as far as copying further CDs (protected or not) go.

Assuming it's not -- and hopefully, as replacing ASPI layers can be tricky -- turn off autoplay with TweakUI and grab CDex. With the 'paranoia' setting and a half-decent drive, anything's possible.

Oh, and if the PC is of decent speed, make sure to use "--alt-preset standard" quality when encoding and it should manage it on the fly. Personally I generally rip a bunch of CDs to WAVs and then leave them encoding in the background.

... I've got Windows 2000. Probably makes a bit of a difference, eh?

When I click the CD drive it opens and all I get is the funky **** for installing the player or whatever it is that the CD wants me to install when I put it in in the first place.

Though I'd managed to disable the autoplay but apparently I'm more comp-illiterate than I thought and/or my comp's a lying sack of ****...

Not at all, just means you need a different version of TweakUI... XP is 2000 with eye-candy bolted on...

Can't be bothered to find link, so have uploaded here: http://virtualdebris.co.uk/temp/

Have downloaded both [TweakUI=quality BTW] but CDex is causing me to go prematurely gray at the mo. It keeps telling me I don't have any tracks selected when, in actuality, I have selected every track.

But it's still a step up from before. Least I can see the tracks now!

dunno if this is related but I'm apparently missing winaspi32.dll. Tried using the "native NT SCSI library" but I ain't getting anywhere...

I had big troubles with CDex too - it copied my tracks to wav but cut off the last 10 seconds of each track and added it to the start of the next track so I ended up having to manually edit the lot before converting them to mp3. I have a few greys from that.

Yeah, that's normal -- ASPI isn't actually ASPI under most flavours of NT without third-party software installed.

You could try getting it to Auto Detect the drive if you haven't already -- failing that, though, try EAC, which seems to have a good reputation with drives that don't like other apps. It includes a setup wizard, but install RazorLame first so that you've got an MP3 encoder.

Actually I had this dilemna last Xmas - I had a load of my mom's vinyl, a computer and a turntable, and I was going to put all of her music onto an mp player for her. After ripping, converting and tagging one LP I gave up and downloaded the lot.

bitTorrent rules.

Commercial software, no? Seems pointless paying for something so commonplace, when the most effective routines are out there free and legal...
