Smoking Ban?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

If people want to smoke, that's fine by me, although I do think banning smoking in restauraunts is a good thing.

i'm in favour of a ban in public, i don't think its reasonable to have other people put up with your choice of narcotic, be it from the smell or passive smoking.

that said i think there should probably be limits on how much people are allowed to drink in public as well, given how much alchohol related violence and trouble there is.

then again i think there are already rulesd about that, but pubs don't tend to enforce them, especially with teh pressureof the breweries.

If they do ban smoking then I think a decent program of NHS care/rehab like what I was given should be made readily available to all, and be shown as an option. not just if u ask for it.

I learnt some horrible stats at those classes, ppl dont just die of smoking, 100'000's lead lives full of diesease because of it.

Help ppl quit and phase it out.

Are you talking about banning smoking in pubs/clubs/restaurants?

We did that in Sweden about a year ago - it's awesome :)

it is harsh if you do smoke as it seems the end of the world, but with help you can quit, and my life is so much better for it now.

I always think, if u could go forward 25 years ppl would look back thinking "smoking, wtf?"

Before the smoking ban my father would easily smoke two - three packs when he was out drinking.

But now that he's forced to go outside he only smokes a couple of ciggies.

Even if you are sitting outside at a table (that belongs to the restaurant/pub) you still arent allowed to smoke.
You have to walk away a few feet before lighting up.

Not smoking in restaurants would be great. You really lose your appetite when people at the table next to you smoke while you are trying to decide what to order.

And after a night's dancing you always wake up smelling of cigarettes and alcohol, you want to hug your boyfriend lying next to you, but still smell the smoke in his hair. Yuck.

In public, fine... although I think more of the problem with smoking is that kids tend to be exposed to it at home. And therefore start smoking themselves.

Totally agree with you there, smoking around where people are trying to eat is not on imho.

However if the government is so anti-smoking then just stop selling the bloody things!! Oh, no of course not... they make too much ******* money from the things don't they do to that....

I have to admit I have questioned how any government would get rid of smoking, I belive it generates around £15million in tax per day! thats a huge sum of cash!

Smoking in resturants, ugh, I love food, and even when i smoked 20 marlboro a day I never smoked around food, its, just ugh!

yeah it generates far more money than it costs the NHS to treat people with smoking related health probs iirc

I... I-I.. whole-heartedly agree! I'm completely in the same mind-set about this!

I'm allergic to cigarette-smoke, and it's a frequent problem to me whenever I'm around in public places with smokers. Bus-stops are a complete and utter nightmare, when the wind just wont stop blowing in your direction.
Denyer wrote:In public, fine... although I think more of the problem with smoking is that kids tend to be exposed to it at home. And therefore start smoking themselves.
A funny thing in my case tho, is that it's not something I've ever been tempted to do because my parents did it. Both were/are rabid smokers, and it was always a problem for me growing up, with my astma. If anything it made me want to detest it, than to be like them, and smoke.

No, it's mostly been school-mates that have tried to almost co-erce me into smoking, but my character was strong enough, and I told em' to save their cancer poky-sticks.

I think the problem is in school, and that there's this world-wide culture of having to smoke to be 'kewl'...

Also: Did you see the news a few weeks back that their FINNALLY ready to start testing the nicotine-vaccine on humans?! :D I've been waiting for this day for 5(!) years! Ever since I first heard about it. I read that the guys that are developing it, have a dream about it being included in the obligatory vaccine-shots that you take as a kid up until your early teens.

And that kind sirs, is a smashing idea. Since it will refuse those first buzzes that gets you hooked on it. And you'll stand a much better chance of growing up to being a non-smoker. :)

Cheers to a better world lads and lass's.
