FIVE YEARS!!!

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Wow, thats like half a decade, like!

David Bowie - Five Years

Pushing thru the market square, so many mothers sighing
News had just come over, we had five years left to cry in
News guy wept and told us, earth was really dying
Cried so much his face was wet, then I knew he was not lying
I heard telephones, opera house, favourite melodies
I saw boys, toys electric irons and t.v.’s
My brain hurt like a warehouse, it had no room to spare
I had to cram so many things to store everything in there
And all the fat-skinny people, and all the tall-short people
And all the nobody people, and all the somebody people
I never thought I’d need so many people

A girl my age went off her head, hit some tiny children
If the black hadn’t a-pulled her off, I think she would have killed them
A soldier with a broken arm, fixed his stare to the wheels of a cadillac
A cop knelt and kissed the feet of a priest, and a queer threw up at the sight of that

I think I saw you in an ice-cream parlour, drinking milk shakes cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine, don’t think
You knew you were in this song
And it was cold and it rained so I felt like an actor
And I thought of ma and I wanted to get back there
Your face, your race, the way that you talk
I kiss you, you’re beautiful, I want you to walk

We’ve got five years, stuck on my eyes
Five years, what a surprise
We’ve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that’s all we’ve got
We’ve got five years, what a surprise
Five years, stuck on my eyes
We’ve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that’s all we’ve got
We’ve got five years, stuck on my eyes
Five years, what a surprise
We’ve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that’s all we’ve got
We’ve got five years, what a surprise
We’ve got five years, stuck on my eyes
We’ve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that’s all we’ve got
Five years
Five years
Five years
Five years

I love that song. The whole album in fact. Especially the line where he talks about someone was smiling and I didn't think they were susposed to be in the song (A song about the end of the world). Genius.

Well done Emvee. I can't believe it's been 5 years for so many. Time just flies.....

Seriously, how long is there a world wibe web? My 'first contact" was in 1997 at the university... home net access was pretty much a dream in those days, well at least here in my country.

I think the WWW came into being in the early 90s... i think 93 was when it started to take off with the home user (at least the more geekier home user).... it's origins can be traced back to the 40s tho iirc.

From what I can remember of the Computer History module I did at Uni (plus random facts I've picked up around the place), the ARPANET (which later evolved into the Internet) began sometime around the 1960s as a US defence/education sector network. The major internet applications for most of its life were ftp, email, and usenet. Then in about 1994, html and the web were invented. This led to the internet becoming a buzzword a couple of years later. My first experience of the 'net was when I started Uni in '96, by which point most people in the UK had heard of it and they were running Netscape 3 on the Uni's computers.

I can answer that question.

Back in 1996, I infrequently used to get a magazine called .net, and they started running a side-guide called .net directory, in one of these guides is a tiny footnote about a TF site, where it it described as being a couple of poorly-sized graphics and a few paragraphs of blurb.

If I can find the guide, I'll quote the reference, including now non-existant url.

[edit]
.net directory #2 Oct/Nov 1995 wrote:TRANSFORMERS

It's not the robots we have a problem with - those sods make Ed 209 look like Metal flippin' Mickey - but with all the possibilities offered by the Web, why bother with a a page if you're going to use a grand total of two scans to brighten up the pages and quite literally pages of dullard trivia that make up this site? Well? Transcriptions of episodes are rather tedious (although nowhere near as arse-numbing as the lyrics to the Transformers Movie soundtrack), FAQ's include 'when is there going to be another Transformers Convention?' (BotCon is apparently on its way...) and this is a prime example of things going tragically to waste. Liven it up!
Sorry to kinda hijack the topic, EmVee.
