...but with the people he was speaking to? Now, I'm a confirmed atheist. I'm sure just about everyone on this board knows this. But, I've spent a lot of time looking at my own beliefs as well as the beliefs of others. Up until recently, I'd been thinking that The Bible was nothing more than a bunch of stories put together by people over 2,000 years removed from modernity who inserted a bunch of superstitious nonsense into their lives to explain away what they couldn't do scientifically.
Make no mistake, I still believe this.
However, all this thinking on religion got me to thinking. The people that God spoke to were not very advanced in their thinking. Examples of this include believing they could build a tower to heaven, that Hell was buried underground, that it was possible to collect two of every animal (and get them all together on a boat), etc. Now, how in the blazes would these people have been equipped to deal with, much less explain, a supreme being? Perhaps the problem is that He made Himself known to people who were in no way, shape, or form equipped to deal with the the morals and principals of the Divine.
If you gave these people a desktop computer, their interpretation and uses of it would be completely different from what we, in 2006, have.
Just a random thought at two AM.

If something omnipotent wanted to communicate, it would.Professor Smooth wrote:how in the blazes would these people have been equipped to deal with, much less explain, a supreme being?
That would rule out language -- communication would be lossless, not abstracted. You'd know what people thought, rather than what they said, and relay the actuality rather than interpretation.
It'd require whole other laws of physics, mind. Observation would need to be possible without affecting the thing observed.

Yes, if one believes God to be omnipotent, He would have been able to get His point across crystal clear without even spoken words.Denyer wrote:If something omnipotent wanted to communicate, it would.Professor Smooth wrote:how in the blazes would these people have been equipped to deal with, much less explain, a supreme being?

I quite like the implication here; that maybe an omnipotent being did try and communicate with the Israelites or whoever, but because their mind couldn't comprehend it, this being was reshaped into a petty and vengeful god to fit their expectations. Over the years as public opinion of God has changed it has affected its existence so now God is conflicted and rather vague in definition.Denyer wrote:It'd require whole other laws of physics, mind. Of course, it could be that God doesn't exist outside of people's heads and so takes whatever form they want it to.

But that's just the point, every person who thought he was sent by God or heard his message even unvillingly gathers followers who will start a religion as soon as the prophet dies. Or even as he lives.
Mohammed was the most clever one as he started his own religion while he lived and profited from it (he had, what, 400 wives? )
So if God exists and he speaks to you or anyone, chances are high there'll be soon another religion coming. Because, people would only belive in God if he would speak to everyone at the same time... it'd be prime time he did that, though.

Actually, it was only about 15, though Islam caps it for everyone else at four wives.BB Shockwave wrote:Mohammed was the most clever one as he started his own religion while he lived and profited from it (he had, what, 400 wives? )
