So Tony wants a culture of respect. naturally this will be 'enforced'.
is it me or is he running at this totally the wrong way? I'm not questioning the need for controls and penalties in some cases but no one seems to be looking into why so many people feel disenfranchised in teh fisrt place.
what is even considered as 'respect'? I suspect if i called someone a knob for holding a conversation in a shop doorway i would be the one more likley to be carted off butthey are being just as inconsiderate to thoe around them.
thoughts?
what is respect?
how do you nuture it?
i think 'classes for parents.' are a good idea in principle mind, but i'm curiosu as to ho wthe carriculum is to be defined.

Me, my girlfriend, my friend and his girlfriend (who is my girlfriends friend) usually hang out at my place and drink, party, dance, etc. before we go out to a club. (we do this like once every two moths).
The neighbour who lives under me is like a hundred years old and goes to sleep at eight o'clock or something.
At two different times we have woken her up with our music/dancing.
Now, we always leave my place at around twelve o'clock - and it's always a friday or saturday when we do these kind of things.
Are we being disrespectul to the dinosaur who lives beneath me - or should the dinosaur respect our young party-attitude?
It's not like we are trashing my place, Whiskey in the jar-metallica-video-style. We are just four people who play games and laugh.
Should I go to jail for calling her a dinosaur on the internet?
Should I be forced to leave my home for three months because of this?
Would Blair punish me for this kind of behaviour?
Can't believe I'm still here.

if they didn't move out of your way then calling 'em a knob would be just as justified as them blocking your path, but i know what you mean.Best First wrote:I suspect if i called someone a knob for holding a conversation in a shop doorway i would be the one more likley to be carted off butthey are being just as inconsiderate to thoe around them.
yeah, i agree with you, a lot of the problems i see today are to do with the younger generations. this in turn, logically, must be related to their upbringing...Best First wrote:i think 'classes for parents.' are a good idea in principle mind, but i'm curiosu as to ho wthe carriculum is to be defined.
i blame Thatcher.

Schools and military academies have been trying to 'enforce' respect for centuries.
Terry Pratchett has a charming story about this in one of his books featuring the Guards cast... anyone know which one it's in? Someone, I think it's Vimes or Nobby, is talking about an instructor who used to be a hardass about things... but after they graduated, well, they took him out to a pub... and into the back alley and kicked seven shades of sh*t out of him...

just comming back to this after having my legal lawer mate explain this to me, thier are alot of loop holes in the law that stop the police from helping communities. essentially the law gives the police powers.
The only thing I would be worried about is how police use these powers, as it was pointed out to me tho the abuse of police power could happen under any law, not just a new one.

Re: Respect
Different from courtesy, which is what Blair really means.Best First wrote:what is respect?
I might not respect my neighbours, but I'm not gonna blast Rage Against The Machine out at full volume at quarter to three in the morning because I know they wouldn't like it. I know they wouldn't like it because I'm sure I wouldn't like it.
Courtesy. Not respect.
Blair's a ****. I have no respect for him, but I don't send him anthrax. Not out of courtesy, but because I don't want to go to jail. Even though national hero status would be a small consolation...
Grrr. Argh.

Only people in Blair's constituency should have been voting for him. If the system works how it's meant to. Which it blatantly doesn't.
Being the best thing available at the time doesn't make him the best thing ever seen. Personally, MLT's goal against Newcastle at the Dell in about 94 ranks considerably higher.

If it stops the little bastards who congregate outside my bedroom once every couple of weeks to break glass on my path and write grafiti on my house I'm in favour of it.
Either that or they should pass a law that I'm allowed to defend my home with a paintball gun, which would be better and more fun.

Life would instantly get slightly more dangerous (after all, brickwork isn't very durable in much of this country) but the right to use force in defence of home and hearth is deserved.
