Doctor Who - Christmas Invasion

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Quarries always look like alien planets to me. :) I'm easily fooled!

Not really, not when you consider that the Slitheen probably engineered the high ranking politicians to be absent at that particular time. they did already have Margaret situated within Number 10, after all.

It was probably easier to relocate the high profile politicians than replace them, as sudden changes in behaviour would otherwise be more easily noticed.
Oh, and bits of The Christmas Invasion were filmed in a quarry! Horah!
And in some caves, and on a beach!

Btw, anyone else like the new 'old' theme?

I'm so glad the Middle 8 is back, without it the theme can get a bit repetative... All they need is to put his face in the titles now.

The new DWM has an extremely comprehensive "Making of" article about the special that's well worth checking out (The comic also has Doc10 going up against Sontarans!).

Yeah, I've always felt the "bridge" is the best bit of the theme, it's missed on far to many of Tom Baker's episodes.

Is it available to downlaod anywhere?

In a 30 sec clip. You can get a remake of the Gold score with a bridge from a "Who mixes" website. Don't have the link here but Denyer knows it a a quick google of "New Doctor WHo theme" will bring it up.

Another fantastic Fact From DWM: I missed it on the show, but a background banner in one of the set photo's makes it clear that the mars Probe was sent up by The British Rocket Group! Which will not only piss of Nigel Kneal again (He hates Who for the quite understandable reason that they kept "Homaging" his scripts, especially during UNIT...). Between this and the lines in Rememberance of the Daleks it does raise some questions though...

Like mainly- Why let these people keep sending things into space when everytime they do it all ends in disater (Usually-as here- with Aliens that can posses/inhabit humans trying to takeover the Worls). Why be so eager to send a probe to Mars in the first place when it might not only draw attention to us from the Ice Warriors, but the ...And the Pit Martians as well.

Come to that, why is everyone geting so excited about a probe when Man has landed on Mars, potentialy as long ago as 1970 (alowing for the vaugeries of UNIT dating and the fact the expedition in The Ambasadors of Death clearly isn't the first maned mission to Mars...)

have often wondered that, that and how to connect the 'Ambassadors' and the Ice Warriors... :lurk:

my pathetic attempt to explain it all is that the 70's trip was to Mars orbit, not to actually land on mars... they were then intercepted by a group of aliens (not from mars, but possibly had come to investigate what had happened to the ice warriors)... that's my fanwank retcon anyway...

of course, maybe the 70's mars mission was to mars out by Slough. ;)

The banner is visible to the left of the beardy guy when he makes his first appearance (on one of the News 24 scenes). Though you won't be abl;e to read all of it.

And also in 1997, according to The Dying Days. And as for the Ambassadors. Dialogue in Ambassadors clearly states that "they were there before us" - which means that the astronauts believed that they weren't Martians. Hence the only Martians proven to exist in the Whoniverse are the Ice Warriors.

The 'Previous Project Homepage' was linked from the BBC's Christmas Invasion Episode Guide page prior to the episode being broadcast.

Here's a thought; As Dr. Briscoe was played by a certain Scotish actor in the Beeb's recent Quatermass Experiment remake, that means a chap who looks allmost exactly like the 10th Doctor might have worked on the Mars Probe...

Another amazing fact: You'll probably have guessed the wardrobe was simply the console room with a load of tat thrown about, but you may not know that the console and time rotor are imovable parts of the set, and had to be digitaly removed from most of the shots in there...

I actually knew this. But only because this week I bought my first Doctor Who Magazine in nearly 20 years! :)

I didn't see it when it went out, but I do have the shiny DVD complete with comentry by Mr. Tennant and new Who writter Mark Gattis... Whilst Quatermass is played by Jason Fleming, the son of the director of the Dalek films! It's well worth checking out, it's very cheap (being both live and a BBC 4 production)- occasionally looking cheaper than the original, but it's good tense stuff. Of course, as it went out just after Tennant was anounced as Who, one of the lines was changed to "Welcome back Doctor..." (Aparently there's a similar "Who's that?" joke aimed at him in the Harry Potter film, but I haven't seen that).
