Had a lady run up in front of me ans snatch the last Spongebob toy I was looking at from in front of me. Then turns to me and says in a snotty voice "You snooze you lose". I personaly HATE people like that and they are so much worse this time of year. So I decide to turn the other cheek and just say "Youre right maam, Merry Christmas" and proceed to walk away...
Then she has the nerve to say to me "You shouldnt say Merry Christmas anymore."
I slowly turn around and say "Um.. Excuse me?"
She looks at me with that smart ass sneer and says "You should say Happy Holidays. What if I wasnt Christian and I found that offensive?"
So I proceeded to say "Well then, in that case, How about I tell you to go [composite word including 'f*ck'] yourself? Is that less offensive than 'Merry Christmas'?"
Sometimes I love when people push me past the point of being nice.

Who? Me or her? I tried to be nice. I tried to be cheery.. She tells me Im being offensive by being polite? If someone walked up to me and said Happy Channuka or Kwanza or Rhamadan Im sure as hell not gonna say something like "Hey! I dont care if youre being nice! Dont say that to me thats offensive!"Obfleur wrote:What an ass

I've noticed this year that both "sides" are using holiday greetings as insults.
I told someone Merry Christmas and get an incredibly snotty "Happy HOLidays" back.
Vice versa, I've seen at least a half dozen people (usually in line at local stores) be given a cheery "Happy Holidays" only to be greated back with "Merry CHRIST-mas!"
OPR, in situations like that, I like to simply follow the person around until they eventually get so freaked out that they just leave or get upset. Good showing on your part, though.
Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, has ever been offended by someone saying "Merry Christmas" to them. I'm about as anti-christian as they come and I still realize that if someone is going to the trouble of greeting me in accordance with their custom, it's common courtesy to not throw it back in their face.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hannuka (it starts today, I'm told), and Happy Holidays all around!

When someone says "Merry Christmas", I reply "Happy Holidays".
I think if I lived in a country that claimed itself a Christian nation, saying Merry Christmas would be quite appropriate. However, I live in a nation that claims to be based not an any faith, but on the doctrine of separation of church and state. As such, I think many Christians should be more considerate of the religious inclinations of others around them, and just say Happy Holidays.
Not that I hold any animosity towards those who say Merry Christmas to me. I mean after all, we should base one's actions on one's intention, and when someone tells me Merry Christmas, their intention is usually a good one. I understand this, and return their greeting with at least a friendly smile. But in some cases, saying Merry Christmas back can put someone in a precarious situation where if they reply it could be against what their religious teachings tell them. What if someone does not believe Jesus Christ to be God? What if to believe that is a serious transgression in that persons religion? Then if they reply, they are committing, by their own creed, a transgression.
Again, I disagree with saying Merry Christmas, but I understand their intentions to be good ones, and thats what matters most.
Its really more a matter of being unaware than of any ill intent of those who say Merry Christmas to those who aren't Christian.

Mmm. If a conversation doesn't contain "burn, infidels" or "those black/gay people are wrong" I'm not much bothered by what illusions people have about where they came from or who got pregnant without having sex.I'm about as anti-christian as they come and I still realize that if someone is going to the trouble of greeting me in accordance with their custom, it's common courtesy to not throw it back in their face.
The cue to chuckle and enjoy the schadenfreude, given that I'm quite vocally anti-religion. (Yes, mean-spirited and nasty, but it's not like I pretend otherwise.)Then if they reply, they are committing, by their own creed, a transgression.
If I say "Merry Christmas" to someone, I couldn't care less if they say "have a good holiday" back—nor am I going to not say anything to anyone because of what other petty disputes are going on in society. There's already too much disinclination to speak to strangers, and festivals (much like the weather) are a breaking point into conversation for the majority of people.
Christmas is far more a secular tradition than a religious one, even considering the UK technically has a national religion. Midwinter festivals are common to most parts of world that need something to cheer them up during the short, cold days of the year... Saturnalia, the Yule solstice, or whatever else people want to call it... it's all well-wishing of the season. Using the word "Christmas" isn't an endorsement of Christianity any more than "godammit" is, and if people want to think I'm a Christian (I'm quite emphatically not) because of it, that's fine.
Offence is best reserved for times it matters, like attempted lynchings, segregation, concepts of sin being used as external validation of personal judgement, etc.

No one does. Some Christians seem to believe that saying Merry Christmas to a non-Christian is akin to setting somebody's mother on fire.Hound wrote:I do not see how any sane person can find 'Merry Christmas' offensive, regardless of what wacky fantasy god they worship. Utter *****.

I think thats backwards. I see more non Christians bitching that by saying Merry Christmas we are pushing our religion onto them.Professor Smooth wrote:No one does. It's not offensive to me. Like I said, I understand their intention to be a good one, and I really do appreciate the thought. But on the flip side, (and this has happened numerous times to me), when I don't reply back with "Merry Christmas" but a "happy holidays", the Christian gets offended or taken aback. Like its impossible or something that I don't recognize Christmas as truth or something. That's what bothers me, not that they say it to me.Hound wrote:I do not see how any sane person can find 'Merry Christmas' offensive, regardless of what wacky fantasy god they worship. Utter *****.
Like I said above, if they want to wish me a merry Christmas, go right ahead, but don't have that disgusted look on your face when I reply back with happy holidays.Didnt we just have this argument about Freedom of Speech? I can see why you'd think that, but you're mistaken. See if you can follow me, here, because it's kind of complicated. Christians believe that non Christians believe that Christians are forcing their religion on them. Non Christians (for the most part) simply do not care. I suppose that some of the really fundamentalist people belonging to non Christian religions may be bothered to say "I don't celebrate Christmas," but that's usually followed by "...but thanks anyway." We don't care if you wish us a Merry Christmas because it's your custom and we know you're trying to be nice by saying it. It's just like we didn't really care when Christmas trees were put up in the center of town. Just because we don't follow your religion does not mean that every display affiliated with it offends us. I speak for most non-Christians when I say that we honestly do not care. It's not important enough to us to have it offend.Optimus Prime Rib wrote:I think thats backwards. When we say "Happy Holidays" we're not saying "Happy Holidays...Except Christmas!" It's just "Happy Holidays= Happy Thanksgiving, New Years, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Channuka, Solstice, Festivus, etc." There are a lot of bloody holidays this time of year!
