Spider-man : The Other

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Spider-man : The Other

Post by spiderfrommars » Sat Dec 17, 2005 1:05 pm

Can anyone tell me which issues I need for the full 12 part story?

I'm not happy about this... I'm flat broke and my Spidey budget's about to quadruple!

Mate, not to be a downer, but if you're broke and feeling it over comics, I wouldn't pick up all of the Other. Spidey is my hero but this storyline...
Maybe cherry-pick the issues where the main stuff actually happens - which I think is about 2 out of the 6 so far.

Picking the whole lot up would also involve buying Pat SUPERSTAR Lee comics. :|

I'm enjoying The Other, but it has a great many things working against it.

This reminds me of a Spider-Man question I have floating around my noggin that I can't recall the answer for. Maybe somebody can tell me.

What happened to Peter's parents?
Grrr. Argh.

They were secret agents for the US government. They had gone deep under cover to infiltrate the Red Skull's group. The Red Skull caught on to what they were up to and, in addition to having them killed in a plane crash, released false evidence that Peter's parents (Richard and Mary Parker) were, in fact, communist spies.

Peter eventually cleared their name. To my knowlege, it hasn't been brought up (in the comics) that the Red Skull was directly responsible for their deaths. I would have thought that a Skull/Spidey feud would have been done at some point, but no.

So, spoilers on the Other (sorry spidey, best look away):

Good: Peter spending lots of quality time with Aunt May and Mary Jane, feeling the humanity of the "I knew I was going to die" feeling.

Bad: Morlun returning without an explanation.

Good: The poignancy of Peter's death issue. The heartbreaking feeling of watching Mary Jane suffer.

Bad: The fact that he wasn't even dead for one issue. Superman got, like, fifteen. But by the end, he's in a cocoon.

Good: Peter David, J. Straczynksi, and Reg Hudlin's writing. Funny and moving dialogue. And Mike Wieringo's art.

Bad: Craphead Lee and Mike Deodato's art. They should have brought in better artists. I think it's killing Lee to try and draw people who look like people and not anime. And Deodato I can't warm to. It's been twenty issues now. He still looks like he should just be drawing Conan.

Good: Um... John Romita Jr used to draw this? You know, they really should have gotten Romita Jr. and Ramos to come back and team with Wieringo, if they wanted to sell so much.

Bad: Straczynski has done the whole, "Spider-Icon-Powers" thing to death on his run. It climaxed in "Book of Ezekiel." I thought he was moving on.

Bad: Paul Jenkins, in Spectacular, had Petey go into a cocoon and come out with increased powers.

Bad: Morlun returns but Shathra the Spider-Wasp, who was much cooler, stays dead? Morlun's just a guy in a suit!

Bad: Changing Spidey's powers in some way. That spike that came out of his wrist does not bode well. I liked "Sins Past" and "Coming Home." I liked "The Hunger" and that other Jenkins/Ramos story about Doc Ock. But you can only change up the mythos so much.

The Other is one of the more uninspiring character revamps I've read. And I've been avoiding the the filler issues and the ones with SUPERSTAR art.
I've enjoyed quite a lot of JMS' run. But this is not clicking with me, largely for many of the reasons you point out.
It's been a very strange marketing tool for OMG NEW KEWL SPIDEY!1! all round.

MJ has been good, tho. And you're spot on about needing JR jr.

...best Spidey I've read in ages was in Son of M #1.

I love him in New Avengers. Kolins and Lynch (is it Lynch? Don't want to check) are spot on art as well.

Finch?

But yeah, agreed. Love having him and Luke Cage in the same book.
He's been better written in comics where he's guesting or part of an ensemble cast than he is in his own titles for a while now, IMHO.

As much as I hate to see one writer doing everything, it might work to stick Bendis on Amazing and give Stracynzski a break.

Is JMS coming back then?

I thought his stuff was running out of steam near the end.

i haven't read half of this yet, but i couldn't be bothered not to read spoilers, soudns like a slightly standard regeneration though, not sure i am that keen.

i'm also not keen on 3 spidey titles, 2 is more than enough as past evidence has shown.

Agree about Morlun, he had a good ending, it should have been left that way.

Also agree about JMS losing steam (though his early stuff was amazing and Spidey being better in NA.

pfft.

He's doing it in addition to his teaching gig. He needs a lot of money to buy a house. His was, well, it wasn't pretty.

When did he get the Bugle gig back? Was it in one of the other titles?

He's always had the option of doing some freelance work for the bugle. I believe it was mentioned casually in Amazing Spider-Man shortly after he joined the New Avengers.

I have one of the New Avengers issues (no. 2 or 3 I think). Is it worth committing to? Is a TPB on the horizon?

Marvel has opted to go the DC route with their New Avengers collections. They're putting out hardcovers out first then, a couple months down the line, they'll be releasing tpb versions. As it stands, it's probably cheaper to buy the individual issues instead of dropping 20-25 USD for about 15 USD worth of comics.
