It doesn't matter!

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

It doesn't matter!

The following things simply do not matter and should stop being taken with such gravity by people at large.

1) Nudity. Everyone (short of the blind) has seen at least one naked person in their lifetime. This goes for the just born. Seeing people naked is NOT the downfall of modern society.

2) Swearing. They're words. Sticks and stones, and all that. Hearing a bunch of "dirty" words will not lead to anything else than having them repeated. The fact that every "dirty" word has a "non-dirty" equivilent should tell you something. **** and poop mean exactly the same thing. Why is one of them "dirty?" Why does it matter? It doesn't

3) Sexual orientation. Two adults want to have sex with one another? Fine. Any arguments about this are asinine. "I don't want gay people hitting on me." Fine. I don't want preppy chicks hitting on me. No difference. Argue the case for this being any kind of a big deal. I dare you.

4) Using the word "holiday" in place of a specific denominational holiday. You want to go boycott Wal-Mart and Target because they don't advertise Christmas savings? I hope you've got enough money to find (and shop at) places that do. These are probably the same people who would boycott the same places if they advertised Kwannza or Hannuka sales. A sale is a sale. It doesn't matter what the NAME is. This argument couldn't be more pedestrian if it walked down the street.

What else ya got?

5) Cannabis, but that's just because I don't see the problem, being born and raised a dutchgirl. It's less harmful than alcohol, but a quite a bit of our cannabis problems are cause by tourists who don't know what they're doing.

I disagree with you about the swearing. I find it unnecessary and extremely rude/offensive.

There are differences in connotation in some contexts... 'f*ck' doesn't necessarily mean quite the same thing as 'have sex with'. Depends on the people. Also, 'f*ck' is a multi-purpose intensifier.

Wonder if the zealots protesting nudity will stop reproducing if it's pointed out that by bringing up kids and seeing them naked they'll be carrying child porn around in their brains! ZOMG!

I have almost as many problems with people who want to rename stuff, in some cases. As long as stuff doesn't become an exercise in preaching, I'm fond of many traditions I don't actually take part in.

The evil of nudity is mainly an American thing isn't it?

I noticed this again recently when I saw Merchant of Venice was a PG here and an R in America. How old do you have to be till you're allowed to see breasts? :(

And I thought Brits were meant to be prudish!

Sometimes it looks like a dutch film is not complete unless it has full-frontal nudity (male or female, or both), which is certainly not always in a sexual context.

I don't think any of these film are unsuitable for minors, except maybe those with excessive violence, excessive swearing or with too explicit sex scenes.

But maybe I am already corrupted. :(

Yeah, the British just make film after film about it. When I saw the trailers for that Mrs. Henderson movie coming out, it was like...hmmm, a new British film about nudity...starring Dame Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins...how terribly, terribly original.

*yawns and goes back to downloading American porn*

Back on topic, I don't think the new licensing laws in England are going to destroy the fabric of society, other than pubs probably won't have lock-ins any more.

Saw a great headline about that saying, new laws, same scenes, the there was a bit how after the first weekend there's no sign of the european style drinking culture promised by labour. As if the new law was really going to change society overnight

bollox
they didnt promiss that - they belive like many others that as adults I should be able to choose when i have a drink.
societys problem with drink is not goverened as to when we can and cannot drink.

Hey ban drinking after 6pm, and u think there wont be a drink problem with kids any more, as they will like stop drinking at 6pm, no, they will still drink when they want.
Education is what you need, not some dreconian act telling me when i can and cannot take a piss.
[composite word including 'f*ck'] all to do with Labour.

The problem with swear words is they have been designated as negative in our society and are now looked upon with scorn. I cant stand to go into a store and hear some 13 year olds trying to sound cool throwing the F bomb out with every other word.

Its possible to use them and not be a jerk about it. For instance if I burn my hand at work or forget something I tend to throw out a "F*ck or a Sh!t". I however do not go to Wal- Mart and tell the greeter "Have a f*ckin great day". Theres a time and place for these words.

Went into a local gas station and there was a girl who couldnt have been older than 12 talkin on her cell phone and bitching about her mother. Who was right in fron of her. After the mother got her order (it also has a pretty good restaurant) the girl proceeded to tell her mother that she was a bitch and needed to pull her head out of her ass. Her mother just walked away carrying everything while the little brat screams "Hello! Can you open the door for me? I am busy"

There was a Sherrif there and I told him that if he wasnt there I woulda beat that child like her mom should have. He said "I wish you would have, I woulda found something to do outside" lol

anyway on a serious note. I really hate when people have foul mouths in front of my kids. They are like sponges when it comes to words. Its kind of embarrasing when your son calls his grandfather a bitch in front of YOUR grandparents..

Yes this has happened to me lol

I've found getting kids to explain what they're saying quite an effective deterrent.

What annoys me is swearing used as a linguistic crutch... appeals to repetitive non-literal language for communication of meaning are lazy and imprecise.

Full frontal nudity?

Every day at 3 o'clock, my place. :D

Python references aside, I find it a very false 'holier then thou' approach from the USA to produce incredibly gory, bloody and violent movies, and yet be so hard on nudity and sex scenes... It's a hypocrisy. And I wonder how come the very same people who complain about nudity don't complain about excess of violence...

I agree wholeheartedly... Say it once and it doesn't disturb me much, but when I'm on a bus with four 14 old girls whose every second word is f*ck then it gets annoying real quick.

I myself try not to use these words. When I'm annoyed, I use 'scrap' (I never got to like 'slag' mainly because of the poor Dinobot with the same name... :D ) When I'm really pissed or I shut the door on my hand ( it happens... ) I do use swear words, though. Or I just growl...

Oh, it matters, it matters all right. Cause one of em' brings POWER!! POWER UNIMAGINABLE! A power-word. ;) These are used to accentuate. When a power-word is used to much, it loses it's energy-charge, and has to be replaced by another. We need to be able to accentuate that some bad mudda fuc*a sh*te is going DOWN!

That's not illegal then? The potentially explosive scenario of mobile phone igniting gas fumes?

Do people smoke at the pumps too?

Should've got the sheriff to step in on that, surely?

no they were INSIDE the station, well technically its a truck stop but its really just a glorified gas station with good food.

Wha? Are petrol-fumes really so unstable a compound that they can be ignited by so small amount of microwave-radiation as that of a mobile-phone??

Or is their a fear of sudden short-circuit with sparks? That doesn't seem very likely with a power-source like a mobile-battery...

On fireworks night I felt quite guilty after shouting "****ing hell!" at the very top of my voice in front of a girl of about 5 or 6 dressed in her mittens and wellies...

...but then again, a firework had just exploded in my face and I thought I was going to die. The guilt was quite a bonus after that.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Spark issue.

It can happen! It was in an episode of CSI: Miami and everything.

Guy had been siphoning petrol, had residue inn his system because of it. Picked up his mobile to connect an incoming call. Spark from the battery ignited with the fumes - deaded. Burnt from the inside out.
Grrr. Argh.

swearing gets its power from the people who care about it.

being a gentleman has rod to do with whether you swear or not, its to do with your appraoch to life, which i would like to think would include not getting worked up about pointless things.

i swear all the time, but seldom in an aggressive way.

If people didn't get so worked up about some of the waste of time issues on Smooth's list we could probably make more headway about dealing with real stuff.
