Lost [Spoilers]

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Lost [Spoilers]

Post by Impactor returns 2.0 » Wed Oct 12, 2005 9:49 pm

Im the only person who finds it boring, almost nothing happens in a whole hour of running around in the jungle, flash back to someones past life, drag out a tiny event for ages. end of the episode.

I find it boring as [composite word including 'f*ck'], I just want someone to tell me where the writters are heading with it, its like there is some thing 'strange' about the island that tends to change a lot, but they never link any of it together it feels disjointed, everything is left un-answered in a way I belive because the writting is ****.

I just find it boring and badley written and it repeats the same old crap week in week out.

typical episode.

character gets lost a bit in the forest,
hears a sound
few ppl see somthing strange - you dont see it
someone acts spooked
flash back to someones life a bit
funny music
end.

Its tedious and its a bit of a case of style over substance. Its also very watchable.

I'm happy it turned out that the hobbit was ok today.

A lot of nothing would happen if left stranded on an 'uninhabited' island.

Big Brother-style Reality TV is a prime example of this. They show the highlights because, for the majority of the time, there's nothing noteworthy going on.

Take tonight's episode, for example. They were hunting for Ethan, Charlie and Claire. They didn't know how much of a headstart they had, so they didn't know how long it'd be before they'd catch up with them. They didn't know the terrain, so they had no idea what general direction to be heading in.

How boring would it have been if they'd done the hunt as a several-part piece, showing Locke sniffing every broken twig and pawing every folded leaf?

If they removed all the nothing bits from the episode, they'd probably have some 5-minute cartoon where Hurley says Ethan's not on the list, cut to Jack, Locke, Kate and Boone splitting into to groups, Jack getting a beating, then finding Charlie up a tree. Suddenly those three are back at camp and Boone and Locke discover the metal thing. No explanations, no suspense, no entertainment, no future for the show.

On the other hand, there were plenty of predictable moments.

Things are left unanswered because television is about posing questions so that people will tune into the next episode.

The trick lies in giving answers every now and then, and making them actually worth the wait. The X-Files turned to ***** because it never bothered resolving anything, whilst Alias managed to become even more ludicrous by always having the answers be a complete anticlimax.

Lost is one of those programs that works best in chunks of episodes. If you're forced to wait a week between them then it's very easy to lose interest and find it dull. Whereas in wallpaper sessions, the flashback structure is rather good because the program becomes more "learning about the characters" than "strange goings-on in the jungle."

What episode are 4 upto, incidentally?

[EDIT] - *reads Rebis' post*
Ah, that one. Groovycool.
Grrr. Argh.

I watched season 1 in chunks, as Brendocon says.
That way I found it very interesting - and very exciting.

But now I'm watching season 2 (one episode a week) and I find that it has lost (Haha) it's 'thing'.
Can't believe I'm still here.

Dunno, I'm looking forward to S2E4 tonight, it's a Hurley episode :)

And yeah, they drag it out as long as possible but the answers we've got in S2 so far have been far more than I expected to get. I reckon there's going to be a lot of character-based stuff now until the middle of the season when the next big reveal will happen...and then more questions...

As an aside, I watched the last episode of the X-Files where they explained everything, in order, with flashbacks. It was execrable. And Mulder didn't get his sister back, like he was supposed to.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

could we maybe have spoilers in a seperate topic, i don't think many people who are currently watching will want to participate now for fear of reading something they don't want to.

Jack is too much of a "all american good boy" a la Clark Kent.
Sometimes I cant stand him.

And besides, you liked Party of 5 because of Neve Campbell. Not Jack :o
