ok,ok, so after much slagging off in the past, i've decided it's time i started to think about upgrading from win2000. i've gotten hold of xp pro and plonked it on my laptop (p3 600mhz 192mb ram (rescued from bin at work)) - there was no way i was going to risk upgrading my main desktop without testing this first.
i have to say, i'm partially pleased with it. it does seem to load a bit quicker than 2k used to, however i do seem to be having a problem and i was wondering if any of you xp users out there could perhaps shine a bit of light on it for me... it's my wireless networking - i never had any problems with my wireless link under 2k, but now on xp, it's taking about 2 mins after finishing booting up and logging on for the wireless connection to stablise - any ideas on how to tweak this at all?

Consult which applications might be starting up when you boot your computer, it is possible that one of them (perhaps an IM program) is causing a delay to your network connection coming up. Try booting up in Safe Mode With Networking by pressing F8 just before the Windows XP splashscreen appears on bootup, that should stop any extra programs or drivers from interfering with it.

I use a wireless connection throughout my house an my connection is pretty instant.
as i understand it thee are different levels of encryption you can protect your wireless connections with, perhaps they are set to the highest type and its taking time or somthing?

ya, tis odd indeed...
nope, no fancy applications starting up, the wireless was the first thing i installed after the OS itself (so i could go online and download the post sp2 updates - fun fun fun). tried it without Kerio firewall too (i'm not trusting the microsoft firewall to protect me from ****) just incase it was that (it wasn't under 2k), but it's not.
not tried safe mode yet, will give that a spin tonight when i get home.
i'm currently using WEP for security, that shouldn't be a problem (and never was under 2k).
i've not tried the moustache approach yet admittedly, although i have fairly heavy stubble at present in addition to the sideboards... maybe that is what is interferring with the signal or something?

Be aware - after you put XP on the hard drive, it's like a tick. It stays there forever, you can only re-format it...
If I were you I'd go with Millenium, worked fine for me and I could still run old games on them (on XP I have to use DosBox)

Well, rather bizarrely it's now working great... i didn't change a thing, i guess XP's startup optimization really works
i always reformat a drive before (re)installing an os, never trust windows to clean up after itself...BB Shockwave wrote:Be aware - after you put XP on the hard drive, it's like a tick. It stays there forever, you can only re-format it...
no offence right, but i'd rather poke my eyes out with blunt spoons then go near windows MEBB Shockwave wrote:If I were you I'd go with Millenium, worked fine for me and I could still run old games on them (on XP I have to use DosBox)

It's in Swedish, but I'll try and translate it.Karl Lynch wrote:Can you give the specific error message?Obfleur wrote:My XP hates me.
I cant install games anymore - it just tells me "Your Windows Installer is broken".
And when I try to install something that'll fix it, it says "Your Windows Installer is broken, so you cant install this".
"Windows Installer hasn't been correctly installed, or you are using the computer in Safe Mode. Install it correctly, or contact your local support".
Can't believe I'm still here.
