revolution or ********?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

revolution or ********?

http://www.atomchip.com/

sounds like bullcrap to me to be honest, but if you go through to the actual CES site they are credited with winning an award... and for once google is giving me a lot of results on it, what do you guys think?
THE REVOLUTION BEGINS

The notebook does not employ a Hard Disk and is completely based on solid state AtomChip® optoelectronics [except the mechanical Optical Drive: DVD Super Multi].

The new non-volatile Quantum-Optical RAM increases the speed of the system, since there is no need to refresh information after every cycle of reading of information, unlike regular RAM.

The new AtomChip® Quantum® II processor with 256MB on-board memory has a high speed with very low consumption of electrical energy.

This notebook has a wireless function, high CPU speed and large memory capacity with extremely low power consumption. Absence of the hard disk increases system stability under low temperatures, vibration and acceleration.
the thing that gets me, is if this is real, why has it not hit the news big time? this should be turning heads. maybe it's just a fake, and CES bought it? :o

You gotta stop thinking with your penis.
Can't believe I'm still here.

ah, but is it a quantum penis? ;)

seriously though, i know what you mean Impy, it's just a bit kind of wierd. I mean, why a laptop? i can understand showing off it's mobility, but wouldn't it be easier (and more topical) to put them in a mini pc?

also,
Processor: 6.8GHZ CPU (AtomChip® Quantum® II processor or 4 x Intel® Pentium® M processors 1.7CHz)
Quantum II? What happened to the Quantum I?

Also and rather convieniently, they're X86 compatible? wow!

I don't think their Quantum means quantum (physics), but more of a trade name for their processor, like Pentium, for example.

Interestingly, earlier today I was reading an article on recent developments in nanotechnology, and they've got to the point where they can make nanomachines that can move water droplets. However, the engineering process is still costly, both in time and money, and the water droplet didn't move very quickly or far.

Can't see these 'optical drivelesses' as being something beyond the sketchpad atm, really. And, unless my eyes are suffering from an optical illusion of depth perception, their laptop appears to be like the TARDIS, with the PCMCIA slot and RAM occupying the same space!

That looks pretty dubious to me. I'm certainly agreeing with Rebis- he's absolutely right that 'quantum' is just a name, those aren't quantum computers.

It looks to me like an exercise in putting high-end industry standard equipment into laptops so powerful nobody would ever be able to afford them let alone use them (terrabytes of ram for instance; if you design F1 Racing Cars for a living alright, I can see where you might need that)
