Irony? What's that?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

oy vay -_-

the government really are embarassing. decades of low-income, low achievement, low aspirations and a culture of drink and poor behaviour; and they're going to turn all these people around overnight by getting tough on 'disrespect'... by appointing a generally unpleasant sounding person to head yet another quick-fix, big headling grabbing no results (except those we can fabricate) department.

or if not yet, I'm sure this will be the government's next plan for dealing with yobs, or education, or public health or something. In fact I can see it as the Conservative's next election slogan: "Are you pondering what we're pondering"?

Couldn't be bothered to read the story - looked at her picture instead.

It's about pies. It must be about pies + the eating of them. All of them. Am I right?

It's a bit like the BMC speaking out over the dangers of late pub licences and then applying for one themselves.

The whole late licensing thing is rubbish anyway.

No landlord in their right mind is going to apply to be open 24 hours a day, and no local authority is going to want to grant one either.

The Rainbow in Birmingham is the only pub I know of that wants a 24-hour licence, but as you can probably guess from the name, it's a very inclusive and laid-back place anyway. Can't imagine there's going to be much trouble there.

actually I think 24 hours drinking laws are a good thing.

When pubs empty in Bournemouth we have one of the most viloent areas in the UK - the police are there in full riot gear.

WHy because 3000 very drunk ppl in the same place at the same time is hard to controll.

So, what they did was asked the clubs to stagger closing times by 30 mins, and guess what, crime went down. simple.

So i got no problem with it.

Oh, and can someone change the crap law that says pubs and offys must shut at 10.30 on sundays because its gods day of rest. [composite word including 'f*ck'] OFF IM NOT RELIGOUS!!!

except when it comes to New Labour. ;)

personally late licensing seems to do rod in my eyes as it does nothing to address the culture of binge drinking.

My local is open until 12 every night anyway, except Sundays when it's 11:30. When the new law comes in they're going to be open until 1am every night.

I don't get what the big deal is anyway - most pubs in Walsall have late licences until 2 or 3am already and have done for the past few years, when the cash-strapped council started selling them like hot cakes. What's this law going to change, exactly?

Gives places the option of being open earlier/later if they want to. Which they won't, because it's too much extra hassle.

The idea is that places won't all have to chuck out at the same time. People will have somewhere else to go, et cetera. Meaning less fights.

But it's rubbish because nobody's gonna be open all night.

And the media just grab hold of the whole thing and say "everywhere will be open all night! we're the Daily Mail and we think this is terrible! The sun orbits the Earth! Which is flat!"
Grrr. Argh.

But pubs can already apply for late/early licences from their council - unless half the pubs I drink in are breaking the law. So how is this different?

With the new law they can apply to not do the whole closing thing. I think.

As far as I know, the only difference it's made is that my pub-owning friends had to fill out a 40 page application and then submit fifteen copies of it. Or something. Just to be able to shut later when they feel like it.

Why does every person put in charge/figureheaded of a social affair issue now get called a 'tzar'. Stupid image, no?

Her 'Yob Tsar tag' just makes me think of a drunken Russian imperialist ruler bouncing off the walls in Whitehall threatening to lay out anyone who suggests she might have had a bit much to drink and that monarchies might be a bit pants.

Yet they have family values so i say come down hard on the parents in this country... oh they read my mind!

Governments won't come down hard on anybody who might have a large enough voting power to give them problems next election imo. Part of the problem.

Currently, everytime a pub wants to stay open outside the licenced hours they have to apply to a magistrate to stay open. Under the new law the Local Authority regulates the licence, and once the opening hours are set, they are set. There is none of the previous tooing and froing.

So, if they apply for 24-hour opening, they do not actually have to stay open, but if on special occasion they want to, its the landlords decision because they have a licence to do it.

All of this was in response the the Breweries wanting an easier licening system. It has nothing to do with helping antisocial behavior.....if the breweries didn't lobby for it, it wouldn't have happened.

You can see the opportunity the government seized though.....

Minister: 'The breweries want an easier licensing system, but sectors of the public and media won't like it'

Tony: 'I know, lets tell them its to help the problems of binge-drinking and anti socal behavior!'

Minister: 'Perfect! Then I don't offend my industry buddies and I'm guarenteed that Directorship when we get slung out at the next election!'

Not that I'm cynical or anything.........

Ok then im confused why are you linking binge drinking and late licensing?

Are you suggesting that it wont help? because what im saying is that how come it doesnt matter in the rest of europe.
The problem with binge drinking isnt due to our licensing laws but more society itself. What fuels us to go out and get wasted the way we do? when they dont elsewhere?
Culture.

FOr a policing point of view I think the clubs staying open later will make it easier for the police to keep controll.
Your still going to get binge drinkers regardless, at least this way you dont get them at the same time.
Binge drinkers need to be addressed by education. society shouldnt feel the need to go out and gets smashed out of its face.

Well to be fair other countries in Europe have their problems but they don't seem to have quite the concerns over (young) people drinking lots and generally making some areas of places unsafe to go into at night. I think it's probably a mixture of many issues, including the staggered release times for people who are drunk.
