Yeah, another one of those topics...

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

How come faith based 'arguements' (ha!) are regaining a foothold? Can i have my enlightenment back please?

Nice article for those of us who have risen above such unevolved concerns as organised faith though. ;)

Juvenile Dino's on the Ark? Yes, we know that. They were awoken to fight Shockwave.

What? Oh.

So, if humans and dinosaurs coexisted, does that mean that mankind existed in the cretaceous, or that dinosaurs roamed throughout Jerusalem?

Or do the cretaceous, etc not exist in the Biblical version? I can't remember.

The mess of logistical notions that whole thing brings up is mind-boggling. Mary was Wilma Flintstone's sister!

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's referecing the new Creation Museum being built by the ministry Answers in Genesis. Their website's found at the following: http://www.answersingenesis.org/

But again, I could be wrong.

:sheba: :sheba: :sheba: :sheba: :sheba:

I love Answers in Genesis. Every time I think I should be more tolerant towards religion and evangelism they show up and prove to me once and for all that they are in fact nothing but a bunch of spasticated mongtards* who no more deserve tolerance and respect than a good hard kick in the bollocks.

I particularly like this image from their site:
Image
Which I believe was my .sig on this site for a while. Misinformation is fun, especially when people believe in the divine power of God and will lap up any old rubbish you tell them! Yay!

[edit] *of course the use of the phrase "spasticated mongtards" is hardly big or clever, and most likely to arouse the wrath of the board's appointed guardians. What I meant to put was "mentally deficient twatflappers".

I talked with a really hardcore Christian yesterday. We had a nice discussion about our different beliefs. It wasn't a debate, which was nice.

Him: Why don't you believe in God?
Me: I assume you're talking about the Christian God, yes?
Him: Yes.
Me: Your God is all powerful right?
Him: Yes.
Me: It says so in the Bible?
Him: Yes.
Me: Mind answering a couple of questions?
Him: No, go ahead.
Me: If God is all-powerful, why did it take him six days to create the earth?
Him: Maybe he wanted to passe himself.
Me: Why did he need to take a rest on the seventh day?
Him: ...
Me: Instead of having Noah collect two of every animal and put them (and his family) on a boat so they'd be safe from a flood, why not just kill everyone on the earth except for Noah and the animals?
Him: I've wondered that myself.
Me: If he's all powerful, then why doesn't everyone act like he supposedly wants us to?
Him: It's free will. He can't change someone's free will.
Me: He can't? I think you're missing a crucial part of the term "all-powerful."
Him: He doesn't want to, then. He can, but he doesn't want to.
Me: He doesn't want to do anything about making us do what he wants us to do?
Him: ...
Me: Remember that war between Heaven and Hell? How did that even happen?
Him: Satan and his loyal angels attempted a coup to seize power.
Me: But God's all powerful.
Him: Yeah. God's side won.
Me: But angels loyal to Satan were able to raise arms against an all powerful being. Rather than a war, wouldn't God have known about Satan's intentions and cast him down into hell before he could recruit an army?
Him: Hmmm.
Me: And speaking of angels, why do they exist?
Him: Easy, they're God's helpers.
Me: You said God's all powerfu.
Him: So?
Me: So why does he need helpers? Is he all powerful but lazy?
Him: They interact with humans, God can't talk directly to people.
Me: He's all-powerful. There seems to be a lot of stuff he can't do.
Him: It's nice to believe there's someone out there that loves and cares for you no matter what you do.
Me: Assuming you're not sinning or having sex with people of your same sex. Then he'll drown you or send an angel to wipe out your entire city.
Him: As long as you do what's right, he'll take care of you.
Me: Are you familiar with Job? God destroyed his life and took everything from him just to prove that people would still worship him. He killed his entire family. How is that love or "taking care of?"
Him: You're right. I don't know the answers to any of that. But I think my religion helps to me do things that make me a better person.
Me: Then why not do what you do simply to be a better person, why do you need a questionably powerful being?

I'm beginning to think that if people actually read the Bible, they'd stop worshipping just because the Christian God is a dick. Even if they still believed, it'd be like worshipping someone worse than Satan.

Damn. Still haven't cooled off.

I want to say this before I forget, though. Religion is not the problem. People are the problem. Blaming religion is like blaming Grand Theft Auto or Pokemon.

What scares me is not so much that people hav ethese opinions...

...but that they have funding.

Humanity is fooked.

edit, i like this bit:

""Look, don’t blame God for my ferocious appetite. God originally made us to eat plants (Gen. 1:30), but Adam’s sin brought a curse upon the whole world.""

Who originally made Adam you bellends? eh? EH?

I don't normally comment on this sort of thing, but reading that page has actually made me feel ill.

I just spent several hours building a massive T-Rex ZOID. Would that I could unleash a similar creature, but of lifelike propotions, upon a valley of sinners...where 'sinners' = perverters of science who choose to twist facts, tell lies to kids and plain just make **** up in order to propogate their fath-based view of history.

It's certainly more, uh, inventive than the 'dinosaur remains were placed there to test our faith' argument.

The whole tone of that page...from the word go...urgh. Science and rational thinkers are teh EnImIES of GAWD!111 and they've held the pretty christian dinosaurs HOSTAGE OMG!11 Down with that sort of thing! Grr teh EVIL ONES11!11 Free teh Raptor let us hear his Gospel!11!1!
No more propaganda!

Well said. Incidentally, did that conversation actually take place? There are legitamite counters to several of your points, but the general spirit of your argument is apt and remains uncountered by anyone with which I've ever spoken.

Not sure I can agree with you there Smooth. I don't see Pokemon museums springing up teaching kids that Pokemon is the only truth. Grand Theft Auto doesn't have a mandate to destroy all human-based heirarchies and replace them with the law of Grand Theft Auto. these things are designed for entertainment purposes - that individuals sometimes give them greater significance (like believing that living the GTA lifestyle in real life is somehow acceptable) indicates a mental deficiency on the part of the individual to distinguish between fiction and reality. Religion, on the other hand, (IMHO) deliberately blurs the lines between fiction and reality and then presents the resultant mass of contradictions and half-truths as (no pun intended but I'm going to say it anyway) gospel. And then tells people that their eternal souls (ha!) are in danger if they do not believe in it and encourage others to believe it too.

For every violent video game, movie or book that they try to ban becasue someone has got reality and fiction confused and acted out what they saw depicted there, there will always be thousands more who believed what they read in "holy" books that have caused far more tears, unrest and bloodshed.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Nope, not that either.......I've got it: Mexican Food! We've got all the good Mexican Food and BBQ and you can't have any!

It's made less improbable when you realise that we're articulate and strong-minded atheists/agnostics and have a tendendy to scare away most of the "I don't need to use facts or logic to back up my beliefs so I'm going to take my ball and go home" brigade.

Gotta love a school of thought that simultaneously entitles somebody to think whatever they want regardless of rationale and bans people from even daining to disagree with it.
