If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Seeing as this is a forum based around a science fiction genre, and given the recent spate of sci-f related topics, would anybody like some toast? How about a muffin?

And technology pretty much covers everything else up there. Lightsabers would be under technology. MORPHING comes under technology.

But before they were fact, they (or concepts relating to) were fiction!
Weren't they?...

Well, unless they're naturally occuring robots, a la Cybertronians. In which event the robots could be classed as biological in a sense...

The Spice Must Flow.
(I put down 'Space' because it's sort of genetics and aliens, too...)

Technolagy covers it all.
Space travel,
Time travel
robots
etc...
With these, you can meet or travel to
ALien worlds,
back in time
fight or make friends with robots.

so are time travelling aliens more important then technolagy?
Saying that, the greatest sc-fi ever, star wars, (argue that if u will) works for so many ppl, unlike star trek, because it doesnt ever talk of its own technolagy...

Can it ever.
Muchas gracias to Mob for the Sig, proving why he's called 'King'.
The "i" in "Señior" from "Señior's Covenant" is intentional and part of a stupid & cheesy inside joke from '02. Thank you for your concern.

Star Wars != Sci-fi.
Star Wars = Space fantasy.

Do you have anything without wheat flour? Maybe some hash browns?
I put down "aliens" because Asimov's The Gods Themselves was the book that most impressed me with a sci-fi concept: those freaking cool aliens.

Well, yes, but if we use that as a basis for discounting arguments then we'd have to ignore all the Star Trek parts of the thread.
... actually, I can live with that...

Ahem. Random Galvatron moments aside, Star Trek is (as Tim Bisley said on the subject of Babylon 5) a big pile of ****. Or was it *****? Eh.
So, for that matter, is Babylon 5.

For no worse reasons than Star Wars, far as I can see. Erratic acting, erratic effects, erratic dialogue.
I've a lot of time for tng. First Contact was also excellent imo

I hate Star Wars, too.
Though, in its defence, I didn't spend five years at school being subjected to the endless prattle of two pricks who thought I actually gave a toss about Star Wars, no matter how many times I told them I didn't. Which is what happened with Trek, and is probably the root of my contempt for the series.
That and the fact that there are people who speak Klingon fluently but would look at you blankly if you asked "ca va?" (No, I can't be arsed to find the c with the little flicky thing beneath)
Buffy fans are scary at times, yes. But at least they don't use their own ficticious language in a transparant attempt to make themselves feel special.

Sounds like you hate fanatics rather than any particular franchise?
I've nothing against it, I've got pretty low with reality at times so if people want to feel special by disappearing into a fantasy world I wish them luck
If it makes you happy run with it n_n

I have enormous contempt for the entire Trek brand as a whole. Primarily as a result of the fans, with secondary reasons being that (despite multiple attempts) I've never managed to make it through an entire episode of any series.
Just an opening sequence is enough to send me scrambling for something - anything - else to watch. It doesn't help that there seemed to be about a dozen different versions of it on at the same time for a while... plus the apparantly endless stream of films... it's one of those things that just wouldn't go away and leave me in peace. A bit like reality TV is nowadays... just as one finishes another two spring up... at least fire worked on the Hydra...
Yeah, it's borderline phobic and probably deeply irrational, but I just can't abide the thing.
I have mellowed to it a bit over the past few years... Trekkie-baiting is one of my more enjoyable netsports... but gads, if I had my way I'd nail 90% of them to a tree by their unused genitalia.
Grrr. Argh.
