The greatest science-fiction concept.

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Muchas gracias to Mob for the Sig, proving why he's called 'King'.

The "i" in "Señior" from "Señior's Covenant" is intentional and part of a stupid & cheesy inside joke from '02. Thank you for your concern.

I have enormous contempt for the entire Transformers brand as a whole. Primarily as a result of the fans, with secondary reasons being that (despite multiple attempts) I've never managed to make it through an entire episode of any series.

Just an opening sequence is enough to send me scrambling for something - anything - else to watch. It doesn't help that there seemed to be about a dozen different versions of it...
To be fair, though, 80% of the TF cartoons are ***** and evoke that very reaction in me.

Your move!

Isn't that just the way of things, though?

Me... um, bout the only things I like[d] that could be classified as Sci-Fi would be TFs. BW specifically. The Aliens movies... one or two SW films are okay (I like Ewoks; hate me :o ) and I used to watch TNG as a kid, too. My brother used to tape it (and a whole bunch of other shows) for us kids and send the tapes back home. The original series never really caught on with me, though my brother used to tape that too... I liked some of the movies however. The one with the whales was a fave.

I've not really watched any other sci fi beyond them thar that I can think of... And [to sort-of answer the original question] anything involving time travel can be fun if you're watching it with the right company.

Talk about your mother of all off-topic nightmares!

I start an innocent topic about science fiction, and end up with page and a half debate over what makes good sci-fi.

Anyone here not know the difference between science fiction and sci-fi? Yes?

Well, maybe we should explain it.

Science Fiction: Fiction, where there is a situation involving a factual or fictitious scientific concept, and the drama that revolves around it.

Sci-Fi: Big budget, action-packed adventure where scientific concepts are dwarfed by special effects and the drama is virtually non-existent.

Or, in a nutshell - Most books of the genre are Science Fiction, most films of the genre are Sci-Fi.

Cloning and Robots bring up entirely different issues to Genetics and Technology. Time travel and Space travel give us different approaches to alternative worlds, and Aliens can exist with or without the need for either of those mechanisms.

I voted for Time Travel.

But I just want everyone to know that I stand shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with Impy and Covenant in telling you: Babylon 5 kicks ass!!!!

Sorry, mate. That's what I just read.

Fiction with roots in scientific concepts is fiction with roots in scientific concepts. Regardless of how much emphasis is placed on the science, and regardless of whether it's in written or audio/visual media.

But then, if I'm being literal, I'll also throw CSI into science fiction, and turf out anything with time travel/aliens/whatever into the fantasy genre. Which actually sounds like a pretty good idea to me...

Sorry, not biting.

You interpret it as a sweeping generalisation of my personal tastes as much as you like.

I'd say that Time Travel with all it's madness and chaos that it can inflict is the most interesting science-fiction concept. :o

I of course include all forms of extra-dimensional travel in this, including going into higher and lower dimensions of time, and space, & of course parallel worlds. ( alt. time-lines, vibration-planes, other multiversial nodes, etc.)

It might hur the old nogger at times, when ones feeble intellect tries to grasp the concepts finer parts, but it's ussually good fun. :D

Karl is funny.

Yea.. seriously, here we are dissing on Star Trek, which, although pompous, self-important, stilted and overblown, managed to say some pretty deep things about the human condition. Whereas the TF cartoon...
